Two people tried to double vote at Salt Lake GOP convention, charges could come

KEARNS, UT — Two men were caught trying to vote more than once in the race for County Clerk at the Salt Lake County GOP Convention Saturday, and the chair of the party says it may take legal action against them.

“We’re going to probably send this to the Attorney General, we may actually prosecute,” said Salt Lake GOP Chairman Chris Null. “That’s a serious issue in our system.”

Florida Governor DeSantis given power to gerrymander state’s electoral maps
Governor seems eager to eliminate two congressional districts with large Black electorates giving Republicans a 20-8 edge
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... toral-maps

The Florida legislature will allow Governor Ron DeSantis to take the lead on redrawing the state’s 28 congressional districts, a highly unusual move that will probably diminish Black political power in the state and allow Republicans to further distort the state’s map to their advantage.

State legislatures, including Florida’s, usually draw a proposal for a plan that the governor approves or rejects. DeSantis vetoed the GOP-controlled legislature’s proposed congressional districts on 29 March after proposing his own map that would increase the number of GOP seats while eliminating two districts represented by Black Democrats. Leaders in the legislature said on Monday that they would not try to draft a new plan ahead of a special session next week, but instead were waiting for DeSantis, a likely 2024 presidential candidate, to submit his own plan.

[snip]

The legislature approved a plan earlier this year that would have given Republicans an 18-10 advantage in the state’s delegation. DeSantis’s proposal would have given Republicans a 20-8 advantage.

DeSantis appears focused on eliminating two congressional districts with sizable non-white populations. One of those is Florida’s 5th congressional district, which stretches from Jacksonville to Tallahassee, is 46% Black and represented by Al Lawson, a Black Democrat. He has also targeted the state’s 10th congressional district, which is majority non-white and is represented by Val Demings, another Black Democrat.

“The Florida legislature is caving to the intimidation of DeSantis and his desire to create additional Republican seats in Congress by eliminating minority-access districts,” Lawson said in a statement. “Again, I am not surprised, but disappointed with the legislature’s inability to fulfill their constitutional duties as elected officials without political interference from DeSantis.”

Mac Stipanovich, a longtime Republican strategist in Florida who has since left the party, told the Washington Post that Republicans were “prostrating themselves” for the governor.

“It’s just all about maintaining and acquiring power and holding on to office,” he told the Post. “What we’re witnessing is a mile marker on the road to one-man rule in Florida, at least for the time being.”

Senate GOP to force vote on nixing Biden’s ghost guns rule

Senate Republicans said on Thursday they will force a vote to try to nix President Biden’s “ghost guns” rule, pushing a fight over gun laws onto the chamber’s agenda.

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) said that he will introduce a resolution along with Sens. James Lankford (Okla.), Mike Braun (Ind.) and Mike Lee (Utah) to block the Justice Department regulation.

Abortion ban after 15 weeks signed into law in Florida
https://apnews.com/article/us-supreme-c ... 17f48503a9

Florida's ban has no exclusions for rape or incest.

BTW, for some odd reason, it also requires all abortions performed in the state, to be "reported" to the state. (Why?)

FL WAS increasingly becoming a place for women to come from GA or AL who wanted abortions ... no more.

DeSantis signed the law at a Hispanic faith center.

Just a reminder: there are many women at 15 weeks that might not realize they are pregnant; fetal viability at 22 weeks is around 5% if delivered early.

Video of Las Vegas conservative CCW event showing racist comments sparks outrage, responses from attending candidates

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Racist comments made at a conservative political event are sparking outrage. The event, titled the “Vegas CCW” class, was held on Saturday, April 10, at a Las Vegas-Clark Library. Several Republican political candidates were in attendance, including Mayor of North Las Vegas John Lee and Assemblyman Tom Roberts.

An instructor at the Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) event showed slides titled, “Firearm Safety for White People,” and “Firearm Safety for Black People.”

Josh Mandel runs Ohio GOP Senate campaign 'through churches'

NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio (AP) — Before digging into his six-egg omelet at a bustling northeast Ohio diner, Republican Senate candidate Josh Mandel stopped to bow his head.

“Bless our food, our time, our conversation, in Jesus' name," said Pastor J.C. Church, who joined Mandel after a campaign event at a local church. ”Amen."

Yes Senator McMorrow put the evil GOP Snowflakes in their place bravo! :D

Democratic State Senator Mallory McMorrow destroys GOP evil playbook with this piercing speech.

Democratic State Senator Mallory McMorrow shows Democrats and Progressives that being on the offensive is how you challenge the fraud that is the Republican Party.

Republican Michigan State Senator Lana Theis accused Democratic State Senator Mallory McMorrow of grooming and sexualizing children to marginalize her for standing up against the Republicans, marginalizing the LGBTTQ community. The Republican sent out the attack in a fundraising email.

More to the snowflakery. Tulski sent Mitt Romney a cease and desist letter over Mitt calling out her treasonous lies and parroting Russian propaganda. She also made legal threats against Hillary Clinton, when HRC outed one of the candidates as a Russian asset, even though HRC didn’t name anyone. If it walks and talks like a Russian duck…

Anyways, bring it. Let the discovery commence.

Haha that was so epic.

I wonder how many death threats she’s getting from cons, today.

Diana Butler Bass has a really good substack about this.

Straight, White, Christian, Married, Suburban Mom

They’re not all karens. I know. I’ve gone out with a couple :p
Hell hath no fury like a suburban mom scorned

Senator McMorrow’s remarks are pointed and thoughtfully Christian. And, to my mind, they are theologically and politically convincing, a worthy model for other leaders to imitate. But their real power might be in their undertow — she called Senator Theis mean. It is mean to lie about people; it is mean when you don’t treat others as you want to be treated; it is mean to insult someone’s faith. Mean. Hateful really. McMorrow basically called Theis a playground bully, one of the least nice characters in the world of straight, white, Christian, married, suburban moms.

I live in northern Virginia, in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. In my neighborhood, a majority of straight, white, Christian, married, suburban moms are Democrats. But we also know that just a little further outside the Beltway, straight, white, Christian, married, suburban moms are swing voters — and candidates and political movements can be made or broken by our sisters.

We had an election for governor last fall. Glenn Youngkin brought up things that worry those sway-prone white, Christian, suburban moms — like library books and sex and teachers trained by those liberals at the University of Virginia. Youngkin made Democrats look mean. They’d keep your kids in masks and force them to read books that were upsetting. Mean Democrats want your children to feel bad about things like slavery and racism. They hate you and your safe suburbs and your history. Basically, Youngkin said all the same things that Lana Theis and others like her are saying, but he did it nicely. He didn’t outright call anyone a pedophile or groomer or bigot or fake president. He implied it all — he dogwhistled all the same policies that are now being passed in Republican-controlled legislatures — as he smiled, prayed, and shot hoops. All while wearing a dad-vest as a kind of armor of nice.
Worth a read.

After Democratic shutdown, Fla. Republicans pass new congressional map that kills Black district

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida House passed a new congressional map on Thursday just after Democratic lawmakers shut down the state's special legislative session for more than an hour with a pray-in and sit-in inside the chamber.

The chamber passed the map at just before 1 p.m. as two Black Democratic members shouted a call-and-response chant in opposition to it. The new map was drawn at the insistence of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who demanded the elimination of a Black-heavy congressional seat; Democrats say the redrawn districts unravel Black political power in the state. The Senate voted Wednesday to pass the map.

And the GOP "reduce your taxes" party strikes again. Congrats to all homeowners in Orange County, FL where Orlando/WDW/Reedy was located ... your property taxes are about to increase steeply.

DeSantis wanted to punish Disney. Repealing its tax status may hurt taxpayers instead
https://www.npr.org/2022/04/22/10943165 ... ties-taxes

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday signed a bill stripping Disney World of its status as an "independent special district," fulfilling his request to punish the Disney company for its stances on social and education issues.

The bill will undercut Disney's autonomy, but it could impose a steep cost on Orange and Osceola counties, where the theme park is located. The two counties would inherit the Disney district's debts, which officials say would result in higher taxes.

[snip]

The Florida Senate's own financial impact analysis of the bill states that in most cases when a county takes over a special district, it "shall also assume all indebtedness of the preexisting special district." In Disney's case, that could put local governments on the hook for about $1 billion in bond debt.

"If Reedy Creek goes away, the $105 million it collects to operate services goes away," Randolph said via Twitter. "That doesn't just transfer to Orange County because it's an independent taxing district. However, Orange County then inherits all debt and obligations with no extra funds."

Disney also taxes itself around $53 million each year to service its debt obligations, Randolph said.

The situation quickly prompted warnings that county property taxes will sharply rise. Citing an interview with Randolph, Danielle Prieur of member station WMFE in Orlando reports, "homeowners here could see property taxes jump by 20% to make up the difference. And even then, it probably wouldn't be enough to cover all the money that would be lost."

Sherri Papini's Husband Says He Was 'Traumatized by Her Disappearance' in Court Papers Seeking Custody

The husband of Sherri Papini said his family had been "traumatized" by her infamous kidnapping hoax, in which the California mom falsely claimed she was abducted by two women.

"The whole problem started in November 2016 when Sherri left our children at a daycare and simply disappeared. Both I and, especially, our children were traumatized by her disappearance and I spent much time and money trying to find my wife," Keith Papini wrote in a declaration for the Shasta County Family Court, which was obtained by the Sacramento Bee and the Associated Press.

Ron DeSantis Signs Law Creating 'Police Force' to Pursue 'Election Crimes'
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics ... ar-AAWA7fg

Again, am I the only FL voter wondering: why do we NEED an election "police force"? To stop voter fraud? Just post some night watchman at the Villages up there in Orlando. Seems to be the source of the problem?

I again cannot fathom why this guy is popular. Seems determined to tackle nonexistent problems, while the real ones in the state (like high rents and housing prices or a broken unemployment system) are left unaddressed.

This is just state-funded voter suppression and intimidation. Yay. :|

House Republicans plot to impeach Mayorkas

Enthusiasm for impeaching top Biden officials has spread from the fringes of the House Republican conference to its mainstream — foreshadowing the intense pressure Kevin McCarthy will face from his colleagues if he's Speaker next year.

Why it matters: For the first year of President Biden's term, it was mostly the hard right of the GOP who entertained impeaching the president and his Cabinet secretaries. But those deliberations are now happening among a much larger group — even with virtually no precedent or legal justification.

Conservatives are dependent on the government for their rigged society.

I think the idea of the cops going after Black and non-whackodoodle rightwing Latino voters is a turn-on for them. To me, this a lot worse than snowflakery, it’s punishment, backlash, and threats while hiding behind big government.

Florida bans ranked-choice voting in new elections law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that creates a police force dedicated to pursuing voter fraud and other election crimes, but that's not all it does.

The bill signed on Monday also eliminates ranked-choice voting for all elections in Florida.

Sure they do they love everything that's negative fear power you name it.

New poll reveals GOP voters are actually pretty cool with racist, homophobic, antisemitic candidates

Sometimes you get confirmation of something you already knew and it still makes you want to vomit your small intestines down a storm sewer. Ever wonder why there are so many racist, homophobic, antisemitic, and transphobic GOP candidates? Because GOP voters love ‘em, that’s why! Occam’s razor cuts pretty deep sometimes, doesn’t it?

The latest Morning Consult/Politico poll surveyed voters of all stripes and found, among other horrors, that a full 62% of Republicans are more or less cool with candidates who are accused of making racist remarks.

Read the laws you vote for and your party leaders.

There's nothing inaccurate in saying you guys are "'pretty cool' with racist, homophobic, antisemitic candidates." Not one thing.

It's even worse than just some candidates. You guys actively vote for racist, homophobic, antisemitic policies and lawmakers.

You -- personally -- boast about consistently voting for one of this country's most antigay lawmakers in history, election after election after election.
