Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, ordered security to remove one of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s attorneys from the committee’s hearing room on Wednesday after the longtime infectious disease expert invoked his Fifth Amendment right.

The attorney attempted to speak several times, but Paul would not officially recognize him. Ranking member Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) attempted to use his time to let the attorney talk. Paul would not allow this either.

A group of New York City homeowners is suing to delay the implementation of the new pied-à-terre tax, saying Mayor Zohran Mamdani bungled the rollout.

In a taunting social media post, Mamdani gleefully told people he believed had second homes worth more than $5 million, as well as co-ops and condos worth more than $1 million, to expect new tax bills.

Yeah, Mamdani blew it on that one. The pied-a-terre tax was a good idea, but in an inflationary period when every dump in a halfway desirable neighborhood goes for a million, he set the bar too low. All he has to do is raise the bar to a more realistic billionaire sum, which is more like $8-10 million in Manhattan and lower in other boros.

I'm all for billionaires paying their share in taxes, but the key to success is to not make it regressive on ordinary working people who already pay more than their share.

However, remember that MAGA is still definitely a minority, and a shrinking one that has lost much of its credibility in most areas, and all of it in many urban centers. Really the only constituency keeping these people afloat is the oligarchic 1% and their bought-off news outlets.

More than ever, it's the economy, stupid. A president who copes with inflation by raising tariffs on everything, starting a war that he doesn't know how to finish, and cutting taxes for the 1% is not going to score well.
