The war in Afghanistan was a republican debacle. Instead of going in, getting Osama bin Laden, and getting out a republican president decided we needed a war with Iraq as well causing the military to shift it's focus on bin Laden to settling a Bush family score and allow Bush to proclaim himself a "war-time president." The result was we became bogged down in Afghanistan and the idea of leaving without a clear vision of what victory carried over to the Obama and TFG's administration. Biden was required by TFG's deal with the Afghan government to withdraw all troops in 2021.

In fact Biden was carrying out a policy in Afghanistan that he inherited from drumpf, who ended the war but left office before the phased troop withdrawal that he put in place was concluded. The military defeat, which was not actually a defeat, more like a strategic move to meet changing threat environments, looked bad on the TV screen's constricted version of reality. Back in the real world, however, it was actually the right thing to do and came at the right time to avoid a very messy situation. It could have been the only thing drumpf ever got right, but since he was a shitty president and got voted out, right wing disinfo to the contrary, we'll never know.

The problem is completely to do with the inadequacy of the TV medium to depict ambiguous-looking situations. TV is bad at this under the best conditions, which these certainly were not. The voices over the pictures went out of their way to describe them as a military defeat and a catastrophic blow to American military credibility. The real situation was neither of these.

Worse, the editing seemed to stress the idea that people who had sided with the US were being left to their fate, which was unfortunate but completely anticipated by the Republicans who initiated the withdrawal. They didn't bother to order an evacuation of civilians who stood in harm's way otherwise. They don't care about civilians. Never have, never will. Biden got blamed for this too.

The pictures actually depicted a strategic withdrawal that had been going on for months finally concluding in the rather unphotogenic manner that all of these always will. There's just no way to glorify American troops getting on a plane and leaving somewhere unless the people talking explain the situation.

The media deliberately neglected to do this because their bosses wanted it to be the Democrats' fault. This is despite the historical fact that the original war was perverted by Republican neocons, from a widely supported punitive expedition targeted on a specific and very dangerous terrorist group, to a territorial land and resource grab designed only to further enrich global oligarchs.
