Mass Shootings/Gun Control Reform Thread
Re: Mass Shootings/Gun Control Reform Thread
I'm reserving judgment until more facts come out, but the timing is "interesting."
Sources indicate that the shooter was a teacher from the not-so-beautiful LA suburb called Torrance. He's not dead, so maybe he'll talk. So far the press I can see without subscribing for the rest of my life doesn't have much to say about him. It's Sunday, so LA nooz is either not on today or more interested in celebrity parties in Beverly Hills.
The NYT article, of course, is paywalled. I wonder... if the president had been assassinated, would you still have to pay for it?
BBC has stuff. It'll plant 15 trackers on your computer, or at least that was my count last time I deleted them. But it's free (at least here, where someone else's taxes pay for it). It also tells the story without the hysterical blood and thunder hype. It's from a different kind of oligarchy.

Re: Mass Shootings/Gun Control Reform Thread
So far most of the discussion coming out of the fracas at the WHCD concerns statements made by trump and his people about how this is why taxpayers must pay for a more secure ballroom at the White House. It sure didn't take long for this very serious incident to degenerate into more of the same old Washington same old, with everyone chanting the mantra of it all being the Democrats' fault that our money hasn't yet been spent on The Donald's gold-plated vanity project.
Except for being twice the age of most mass shooters, the guy who got charged with the attack left the usual Internet trail of weird and vaguely demented rants about authority in general. He's a computer science teacher with an advanced degree in the subject. He's written a couple of games that I've never heard of. He came across the whole US by train, presumably with his arsenal. One can see why he didn't want to go through the airport. He'd then booked a room in the same huge DC hotel where the dinner was happening. Not exactly a covert operation. I'm also struck by how much this large structure looks like the Watergate. Brrrrrrrrrr.
Judging from the general layout of the place, the would-be shooter ran down a long narrow corridor that was being guarded, sort of, by Secret Service. He blew through the magnetometer that was apparently turned off anyway, and by the time the many agents got their weapons out and pointed in his direction, he'd already been tackled before reaching a long stair descent down to the hotel's ballroom. This facility is not exactly minimum security itself, being essentially underground and reached by long narrow stairways. It's practically an underground bunker. In fact, it would survive a nuclear hit a lot better than The Donald's White House erection ever will.
They must have discharged their weapons, because many shots were heard in the ballroom. The rest, including the interrupted weird show by the famous mind reader, has been on the Nooz. People with military grade automatic rifles pop out of the woodwork and many guests in rented formal apparel duck for cover.
Most of what I've seen online about this particular shitshow has long since degenerated into the usual partisan ranting.

Approximately 20 shots were heard just after 6 p.m. Eastern Time, appearing to originate from the side of the White House complex that contains the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, multiple local and national reporters who were at the White House at the time said.

Several panics have broken out in L.A. after many shots rang out and military helicopters flew low over residential neighborhoods. Seems that the military decided to hold an urban warfare exercise in the most crowded residential parts of the city, and not bother to tell anyone about it. When people asked what the hell were they thinking, the answer was, "That's classified information." War means never having to say you're sorry.

Re: Mass Shootings/Gun Control Reform Thread
Yes, that shooting was on the Nooz for about three minutes yesterday afternoon (LA time). They had no facts, and since it was the weekend there was no one around to run out and get them any. They just blabbed the usual hyped-up bang-bang-bang mass-panic, undisclosed-number-of-ambulances-called type headlines, and now back to our scheduled programming of weekend sludge, podcasters dumping on trump, and commercials for drugs that take 20 of the 30 seconds to list the side effects.
Right now, a day later, is the first time I've seen a word about what who the shooters were, and what they were actually up to.
Now that it's Sunday, there are even fewer people at the studio, and the ones that are there seem awfully worked up about the World Cup.

Manifesto laden with incel ideology linked to Côte-des-Neiges shootings
Seth Hatfield, the man responsible for a fatal shootout in Côte-des-Neiges on Monday, appeared to have written a manifesto filled with rhetoric associated with the “involuntary celibacy” — or “incel” — movement and advocating for the use of terror.
The 104-page document points to feminism, liberalism and capitalism as causes for what the author says is male suffering, outlining steps to create a “new order” that would curtail the economic and sexual freedoms of women.

At least he gets it for 1/3 of the problem. Capitalism doesn't work, though admittedly neither do any of the alternatives that have been tried with disastrous results by various revolutionaries. There's been a lot of thought put into making capitalism work for everybody, but the people who it works for now won't have any of that.
We'll just keep having this kind of political violence until underlying struggles are dealt with.
