MSU shooter Anthony McRae pleaded guilty to gun charge in 2019

Lansing — State officials Tuesday identified 43-year-old Anthony McRae, who was charged with multiple gun-related crimes in 2019, as the attacker who shot and killed three people and wounded five others at Michigan State University.

McRae, who was found off-campus after dying of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, was identified less than nine hours after police lifted a campus-wide shelter-in-place order following the mass shooting.

The authorities and news were telling people to run and fight it sounded so evil, if you tell hundreds or thousands of frightened people to run and fight maybe they pick out people they dont like the looks of and increase the amount of people injured or killed.

It really sounded like something being said in hopes of making things worse, Like it was the exact wrong thing to tell frightened people to do.

Michigan State University student: I survived Sandy Hook, now this shooting
More than a decade has passed since Jackie Matthews survived the Sandy Hook shooting, crouched down in her sixth grade class in a different school in the district as students were directed to shelter in place.

The Michigan State University senior relived that moment on Monday night, she said in a TikTok video posted at 1 a.m. Tuesday. This time, Matthews said in the video that she was in a building directly across from where some of the shooting occurred at MSU.

"I am 21 years old and this is the second mass shooting that I have now lived through," she said.

In the video, Matthews said she had crouched for so long in her classroom on Dec. 14, 2012, that she was injured in her lower back, an injury that flares up when she's in a stressful situation. That shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, left 26 people dead, 20 children and six adults.......

In Michigan Prayers

Dozens gather at Grosse Pointe Farms church to pray for MSU shooting victims
Dozens gathered at a church in Grosse Pointe Farms to pray for the lives lost and the students still healing.

The candlelight vigil occurred at the Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church Wednesday (Feb. 15).....

Silence

Thousands fill heart of MSU's campus for solemn vigil marked by silence
Quiet.

Complete, utter silence, except for the hum of generators and the swish of winter coats rubbing up against each other as those wearing them hugged.

Thousands and thousands of Michigan State University students, staff, administrators, alumni, faculty and family members packed the area surrounding the Rock — the symbolic heart of campus — Wednesday night. They filled Farm Lane, stretching from Auditorium Drive all the way down to the Farm Lane bridge.

They stood in row after row after row in a circle around the Rock, watching as person after person approached to lay a flower down in memory of three MSU students gunned down on campus Monday night and in hopes of recovery for five more students still listed in critical condition at a local hospital.......
And Noise
‘Listen to us’: Michigan State University students demand action on gun violence in East Lansing
Most of the students at Michigan State University have been trained since childhood on how to handle an active shooter, and that’s a reality they say needs to change.

Hundreds of MSU students rallied at the Capitol on Wednesday before holding a silent sit-down on the steps and front entrance of the building in a protest calling on lawmakers to set aside their differences and get to work on new gun laws.

“Listen to us,” said Carl Austin Miller Grondin, an MSU senior. “We aren’t a statistic; This has happened too many times in our nation.”.....

MSU shooting suspect had 2 handguns, extra ammo on him, police say
The Michigan State University shooting suspect was found with two 9mm handguns, multiple magazines and 50 rounds of loose ammunition, police said in a news conference Thursday.

The suspect, who ended his own life during that interaction with police, also had two pages of notes, including a list of places he wanted to visit and some that could be construed as a motive, police said. The note the shooting suspect had on him had a list of businesses on it, including a Meijer warehouse where he had worked at some point. Other places were businesses where he had been asked to leave, as well as a local church and a school district in New Jersey.

Police said the note seemed to point out that Anthony McRae appeared to be slighted by people and businesses and that could lead to a possible motive. However, police added they didn't have any definite motive......
Looks like inequality, employment administration, business behavior could be contributing factors causing and leaving grievances unresolved to grow and fester. IF you add extremely easy access to firearms and economic system that starves its workforce of resources to deal with problems, and a justice system that is predatory and self serving to the inequality its hard to think terrible things like these mass shootings wont be born of it.

International student has severe injuries from mass shooting at MSU
One of the five injured students from Monday's mass shooting is an international student from China who suffered a severed spinal cord in the incident, according to his roommate.....

......“The bullet severed John's spinal cord (t7-t8) and critically injured his lungs, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. As he remains stabilized in the ICU with a breathing tube inserted in his lung, his family is facing significant financial burdens.

Due to Covid, they are already in a large amount of debt, and John's critical injuries are adding to the pressure on the family, leaving their parents not only to pay the debt in the future but also need to take care of John without having any income, since they are in the US without speaking any English.....

What have we learned so far

All the peoples pride and gold cant stop the violence and mass shootings, hash tags dont really make people strong and they definitely don't heal spinal injuries or massive medical debt, or fill the loss of loved ones or the dissipate the terror left behind. Thoughts and prayers are just thoughts and prayers not good public policy in the interest of the public. People abroad should be warned about the excessive amounts of violence they could experience in the United States and that probably the only way to get meaningful good public policy in the interest of the public in the United States would be for other countries to boycott businesses there so that politicians would either be moved to act in the interest of the public or be starved of campaign funding from it.

I am traveling to an adjacent community to Arkabutla this weekend to visit family. There isn’t much to that little community. The convenient store is about all there is from what I hear. Very rural.

Record 6,542 guns intercepted at US airport security in 2022

ATLANTA (AP) — The woman flying out of Philadelphia’s airport last year remembered to pack snacks, prescription medicine and a cellphone in her handbag. But what was more important was what she forgot to unpack: a loaded .380-caliber handgun in a black holster.

The weapon was one of the 6,542 guns the Transportation Security Administration intercepted last year at airport checkpoints across the country. The number — roughly 18 per day — was an all-time high for guns intercepted at U.S. airports, and is sparking concern at a time when more Americans are armed.

In 2022, right-wing extremists committed every ideologically driven mass killing identified in the U.S., according to a new report from the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism.

The report released Thursday found that last year, domestic extremists killed at least 25 people in the U.S. in 12 separate incidents. 18 of those 25 killings were committed in whole or in part with ideological motives. And the remaining seven either had no clear motive or were committed for a non-ideological reason.

Although extremist killings decreased in 2022 compared to 2021 — when 33 extremist-related murders took place — the trend is still concerning as an “unusually high” proportion were carried out by white supremacists, according to the ADL’s report.

The report found that 60% of the deaths tied to extremist mass killings last year came from two incidents: the racist mass shooting in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York and the mass shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs.

“It is not an exaggeration to say that we live in an age of extremist mass killings,” the report said.

The number of extremist mass killings across the U.S. in the past decade is at least three times higher than any decade since the 1970s, according to the ADL.

“The 26 mass killing incidents over the past 12 years actually exceed those from the previous 40 years (20),” the report reads.

The number of deaths associated with mass killing incidents has increased, according to the report. And the numbers speak for themselves.

Between 2010 and 2020, 164 people died in ideological extremist-related mass killings, more than in any other decade except the 1990s, in which almost all the deaths were caused by the Oklahoma City bombing — when a domestic terrorist bombed a federal building and killed 168 people.

She doesn't fit our usual school shooter profile, both in terms of age and gender. A 28 year old woman. She carried the usual kinds of weapons (assault weapons), and was killed by police. So it may be a while before we know her name and all the questions on motive begin.

The good news - there was a quick response this time. Quicker than Uvalde.

Cons love guns, especially when they kill innocent people. They must, given they go out of their way to make sure everybody has one.

Guns Don't Kill People, Americans Kill People
On the 20th Anniversary of "Bowling for Columbine" winning the Oscar, you can watch it for free

Twenty years ago tonight, on March 23, 2003, our film, “Bowling for Columbine”, received the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature of the year.

But it was also the fifth night of one of the greatest war crimes of the new century — the illegal invasion and bombing of Iraq by George W. Bush and the people of the United States of America. A whopping 72% of the American public backed Bush and the war, as did the majority of Democrats in the U.S. Senate. Bush’s cronies — Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Elliott Abrams, etc. — desperate to take control of Iraq’s oil and eliminate Saddam Hussein, concocted a lie claiming Iraq was involved in the 9/11 terrorist attack and that it now possessed weapons of mass destruction.

Of course, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 (Osama bin Laden plus 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia). And, of course, the U.S. invasion force never found a single weapon of mass destruction. They did manage to annihilate hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians, a mass murder of human beings who never threatened any Americans. Nearly 5,000 American troops, sent to kill the Iraqis, were themselves sent to their own senseless slaughter. Their parents and families, to this day, have never been given a reason for what they died for, and no apology has yet to be issued to them for Bush selfishly sacrificing their lives for absolutely nothing but his own personal revenge.

The utter sadness over this premeditated war crime is felt to this day. Bush and Cheney have never been indicted by the International Criminal Court and they remain free to do as they please. Few Democrats have apologized for being their enablers. I find it difficult to celebrate today’s anniversary of us “winning an Oscar” when the only thing we should consider remembering of what happened 20 years ago this week is this crime against humanity, committed in our name against the Iraqi people.

But I will use this “Bowling for Columbine” Substack moment to once again demand that we, the people, stop and examine why we have such a thirst for violence, a desire to kill our “enemies,” and an insane fear of “the other” — which causes us to possess nearly 400 million guns in our homes.

Those who didn’t see “Bowling for Columbine” think it’s a movie about guns. It isn’t. It’s about us. Americans.......

The contradictions in our current philosophy of government have become so extreme that the average human brain cannot even conceive of them. Meanwhile the usual people on the Internet tell us that we are threatened by all manner of creepy crawly political adversaries, or they glorify the preparations for civil war at home as the solution to all problems, both on the social and personal levels.

This process, or at least ones like it, has happened many times in history, usually with wide ranging and very tragic consequences.
