Longtime Roots Bassist Leonard “Hub” Hubbard Dies at 62

Leonard “Hub” Hubbard, longtime member of the trailblazing Philadelphia hip-hop crew the Roots, has died, The Philadelphia Inquirer and ABC 6 report. Hubbard’s wife Stephanie confirmed the news to the Inquirer; the cause of death was multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer that Hubbard was diagnosed with in 2007. The Roots posted about Hubbard’s death on their official social media accounts earlier this evening (December 16). “It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we say goodbye to our brother Leonard Nelson Hubbard,” the Roots wrote. “May your transition bring peace to your family to your friends to your fans and all of those who loved you. Rest in Melody Hub.” Hubbard was hospitalized last night at Lankenau Hospital. He was 62 years old.

Hubbard joined the Roots in 1992. At the time, the band was known as the Square Roots, and had not yet issued their debut album Organix, which arrived the next year. Hub played on a string of early Roots albums, including 1994’s Do You Want More?!!!??!, 1996’s Illadelph Halflife, 2004’s The Tipping Point, and more. His final recording with the group appeared on 2006’s Game Theory. Hubbard left the Roots following his 2007 cancer diagnosis. In 2008, he briefly reunited with the band onstage at the annual Roots Picnic.

Hours later, the news broke Kangol Kid had indeed passed on, bringing his valiant fight with Stage 4 colon cancer to a tragic end.

We look at the life and legacy of trailblazing Black feminist scholar and activist bell hooks, who died at the age of 69 on Wednesday. We speak with her longtime colleague Beverly Guy-Sheftall, professor of women's studies at Spelman College, who remembers her as "a person who would sit with young people and community people and students and help them understand this world in which we live, which is full of all kinds of domination." Working in the tradition of intersectionality and Black radical feminism, hooks's critiques of "imperialist white supremacist heteropatriarchy" called attention to the interlocking systems of oppression in hopes of eradicating them, Guy-Sheftall says.
It wasnt anger that I was feeling when I wrote this book, it was the keenness of insight, it was the clarity of truth telling, It was the power of breaking out of the bondage of oppression and exploitation. we have to think about why when people of color find our voice, white people so often can only hear that voice as an angry voice. ----Bell Hooks

It is essential to our struggle for self determination that we speak of love. For love is the necessary foundation enabling us to survive the wars, the hardships, the sickness, and the dying with our spirits in tact.----Bell Hooks

Marvelettes singer Wanda Young dies at 78, remembered for voice, wit
Wanda Young, co-lead singer of popular Motown group The Marvelettes, died Dec. 15. She was 78.

Fellow Motown performers remembered Young for her distinctive voice, wit and stage presence.

“We were kids,” Motown singer Carolyn Crawford said, recalling her experiences with Young in the early 1960s. “We did a lot of record hops together, the Marvelettes and the Velvelettes. She was a pleasant, friendly person.”

Young was a student at Inkster High School when she replaced original Marvelette Georgia Dobbins, whose parents refused to sign off on her singing career. With all the right elements in place, the troupe scored a deal with Motown in 1961. In August that year, the label released “Please Mr. Postman,” penned by Dobbins, and it steadily climbed the charts, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 11, 1961, and remaining atop the R&B chart for seven weeks. Young sang lead on the B-side, the ballad “So Long, Baby.”.........

South Africa's Tutu - anti-apartheid hero who never stopped fighting for "Rainbow Nation"

(Reuters) -"Like falling in love" is how Archbishop Desmond Tutu described voting in South Africa's first democratic election in 1994, a remark that captured both his puckish humour and his profound emotions after decades fighting apartheid.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu, the Nobel Peace laureate whose moral might permeated South African society during apartheid's darkest hours and into the unchartered territory of new democracy, died on Sunday. He was 90.
