New blood from Iowa City coming soon to legislature

Voters in Iowa’s bluest city will elect at least two new state lawmakers next year. State Senator Joe Bolkcom announced on November 4 that he will not seek another term in 2022. First elected in 1998, Bolkcom said in a message to constituents and supporters that it’s “time to rotate the crops” and “bring new ideas and new energy to solving problems facing working people and our communities.”

His decision creates an open seat in Iowa Senate district 45, covering Iowa City and University Heights. One of the House districts contained in Bolkcom’s district will also be open, since State Representative Christina Bohannan is running for Congress rather than for re-election.

Glad to hear, and when I hear of these stories I wonder why there aren't MILLIONS of them. Staying in the GOP is an act of fascism.
I sigh in your general direction.

Oklahoma State coach slams NCAA after postseason ban upheld: ‘That’s utterly ridiculous’

The NCAA officially rejected Oklahoma State’s appeal and banned the men’s basketball program from the postseason in 2022 on Wednesday, and head coach Mike Boynton is not happy.

Boynton, who held back tears while speaking with reporters on Wednesday after the ruling, slammed the NCAA’s decision — which came after the massive FBI investigation into corruption throughout college basketball.

Report: Seattle coach Jim Hayford suspended after allegedly using racial slur

Seattle University suspended basketball coach Jim Hayford and placed him on administrative leave on Saturday after he allegedly used the N-word multiple times, according to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

The incident took place during Thursday’s scrimmage, per the report. A player in the game allegedly used the N-word, which officials running the scrimmage then questioned. Hayford, who is white, “then repeated the word in an effort to curtail its use,” according to Goodman.

U.S. bans Communist journalist from traveling to Nicaragua for elections

MEXICO CITY—“Are you or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” U.S. authorities infamously asked those entering the country during the Cold War. Nowadays, the questions may have changed, but the intention is the same—to keep out undesirables.

It seems that I am one of those undesirables—as well as a Communist—finding myself banned from transiting through the U.S. on my way to Nicaragua. “Travel unauthorized,” my ESTA application rejection email said. ESTA is the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, the pre-travel form required of all foreign nationals entering the United States from countries listed on the U.S.’ Visa Waiver Program. They don’t tell you why you’re rejected.

YouTube Has Removed The Dislike Counter

It was teased back in March, but today YouTube made it official: the platform will be removing the dislike counter. This means you’ll no longer be able to look at a video and think, gee, this isn’t a very popular video, I’m sure it’s just bad and not at all the result of a weaponised fanbase and/or political group.

The dislike button itself will remain, so you can make your feelings known if you truly must. It’s just the public counter displaying how many times the dislike button has been clicked that’s going away.

Virginia Supreme Court disqualifies one GOP nominee tapped to redistrict maps

The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday cast doubt on all three nominees put forth by Republican leadership to draw the state’s new congressional and legislative maps, disqualifying at least one of the three for a “conflict” due to his past paid work with the state’s GOP leadership.

After a bipartisan commission failed to reach agreement on new congressional and General Assembly districts, the state Supreme Court is redrawing the maps. Democratic and Republican leadership in the General Assembly can each offer nominees for the court to hire as special masters.

Cawthorn won’t run for re-election in current district

During his brief political career, Western North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn has become known for saying some surprising things to further his political agenda, but Cawthorn’s most recent statement is by far the most surprising.

“I believe we have a unique opportunity to increase conservative leadership from North Carolina,” Cawthorn said in a video posted around 7 p.m. this evening. “I have every confidence in the world that regardless of where I run the 14th congressional district will send a patriotic fighter to DC. Knowing the political realities of the 13th district I am afraid that another establishment ‘go along to get along’ Republican would prevail there. I will not let that happen. I will be running for congress in the 13th Congressional District.”
