Supreme Court won’t review contempt conviction of anti-Chevron environmental lawyer

(CNN) — The US Supreme Court left in place the conviction of attorney Steven Donziger – a long-time foe of Chevron Corp. – who sought to challenge the appointment of private attorneys to prosecute criminal contempt of court.

In the 1990s, Donziger represented thousands of farmers and indigenous people who, he said, suffered environmental and health problems caused by oil drilling in Ecuador. An Ecuadorian court awarded the plaintiffs $9.5 billion in damages. Texaco, purchased by Chevron in 2001, had previously withdrawn its assets from Ecuador. Chevron fought Donziger in the US, arguing successfully in court that he procured the Ecuadorian judgment through bribery and fraud. Donziger was later disbarred.

Jim Trotter believes his questioning of Roger Goodell “played a role” in his termination by NFL Media

Jim Trotter has dared to poke the bear during two consecutive pre-Super Bowl press conferences. He believes the bear has now poked back.

Appearing on Peacock’s Brother From Another, Trotter said he believes his termination by NFL Media was influenced at least in part by his public questioning of Commissioner Roger Goodell on matters of diversity in the NFL Media newsroom.

Twitter restricts Greene’s congressional account over ‘vengeance’ post

Twitter on Tuesday restricted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) congressional account for seven days after she repeatedly posted an image of a poster about a rally called “Trans Day of Vengeance.”

Greene tweeted about the event after three children and three adults were killed in a shooting at a Christian school in Nashville. Police say that the suspect in that shooting, who was killed during the incident, identified as transgender.

Army quickly plans new ads after Jonathan Majors’ arrest

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army is working to quickly pull together some new recruiting ads to air during the NCAA’s Final Four basketball games this weekend, after being forced to yank commercials that featured actor Jonathan Majors, in the wake of his arrest last Saturday.

Army leaders had been excited to feature Majors in the ads, as a key part of their new campaign aimed at reviving the service’s struggling recruiting numbers — which fell far short of their enlistment goal last year. They believed the ads would capitalize on Majors’ popularity coming off his recently movies “Creed III” and “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” — hoping it would help them reach the youth audience.

Climate Deniers Get Expelled From National Science Teaching Association Conference

The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) held its National Conference in Atlanta last week, and because climate deniers jump at every opportunity to embarrass themselves, they invaded the conference and, like unruly and immature students, got thrown out within minutes.

On the first day of the conference, the CO2 Coalition, a climate change denial group, released a report criticizing the NSTA’s Position Statement on The Teaching of Climate Change for its “embrace of the hypothesis of ‘harmful man-made warming’” and “reliance on ‘consensus’ science.” The document argues that “students should be encouraged to review all facts on a subject (in this case climate change) and make up their own minds rather than be indoctrinated into an established political agenda.”

Three Men Arrested in Florida Gym Beating of Tekashi 6ix9ine

Three men were arrested on Thursday (March 30) and booking into the Palm Beach County jail in connection with an assault on rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine earlier this month. According to the Associated Press, Rafael Medina Jr., 43; Octavious Medina, 23; and Anthony Maldonado, 25, were arrested on robbery and assault charges in connection with their alleged attack on the rapper on March 21 at an LA Fitness in Lake Worth, Florida.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the men were jailed on Thursday night after they allegedly beat the 26-year-old “TROLLZ” rapper (born Daniel Hernandez) in an incident caught in a cellphone video. In the clip, two of the men are seen descending on Hernandez, who is laying on the floor of the gym’s sauna area trying to defend himself as one of the men repeatedly kicks him.

MLB investigates video of Angels' Anthony Rendon grabbing shirt of A's fan on Opening Day

Major League Baseball is investigating a video making the rounds on social media that appears to show Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon holding a fan by the shirt through the bleacher guardrails. The incident occurred on Opening Day in Oakland after the Angels' 2-1 loss to the Athletics.

In the video recorded from behind, Rendon looks to have quickly caught the shirt of the fan dressed in Athletics colors, who was leaning down toward the Angels player. With a smile, Rendon appears to confront the fan while still holding his shirt through the railing.

NC Democrat expected to change parties

A North Carolina Democratic lawmaker is expected to flip her party affiliation, multiple Republicans with knowledge of the discussions tell Axios.

The move would cement Republicans' toe-hold in a fast-changing swing state, handing them a veto-proof majority in the middle of the legislative session and a clear runway to enact their agenda despite opposition from Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon will serve a four-game suspension for a public altercation with a fan in Oakland last week, videos of which circulated on social media.

Whitmer repeals Michigan's 1931 abortion ban
House Bill 4006 repeals two Michigan laws: one that makes it a felony to administer an abortion to a pregnant woman unless "necessary to preserve the life of such woman" and another that makes it a misdemeanor to sell or advertise medication for an abortion. It passed with the support of every Democratic lawmaker and two Republicans in the state House: state Reps. Thomas Kuhn, of Troy, and Donni Steele, of Orion Township......

......"I am about to slay three zombies with one pen," Whitmer said before signing the three bills.

Whitmer made protecting abortion access a key pillar of her reelection campaign against Republican Tudor Dixon, a staunch opponent of abortion rights.

Several senior Architect of Capitol leaders fired in latest shake-up

Several top-ranking leaders in the Architect of the Capitol’s office were asked to resign or be terminated on Thursday, marking the latest shake-up in the agency after President Biden fired Brett Blanton as Architect of the Capitol in February.

Chere Rexroat, the acting Architect of the Capitol and Chief Engineer who took over after Blanton’s departure, announced the changes in an email to the agency’s staff on Thursday, providing few details or additional reasoning. Rexroat also said the Government Accountability Office will conduct a review, the scope and focus of which was also not immediately clear.

Arizona House Expels Republican Over Ethics Violation and Election Misinformation

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Thursday, April 12, the Republican-controlled Arizona House voted 46 to 13 to expel state Rep. Liz Harris (R) over ethics violations, including some relating to election misinformation. The move comes one day after the Arizona House Ethics Committee released a report determining that Harris violated state House rules when she invited a constituent to share false claims about elections and other conspiracies at a committee hearing. According to the report, the constituent’s presentation was titled “Preliminary Findings of Activities Impacting Arizona’s Election Integrity” and “alleged the existence of numerous schemes that encompass money laundering, drug trafficking and sales, public corruption, bribing of public officials, and election fraud.” The presentation named various public officials and asserted that they committed improprieties.
