After White House truck crash, driver charged with threatening Biden

WASHINGTON, May 23 (Reuters) - A Missouri man who drove a rented box truck into security barriers near the White House was charged with threatening the president after what authorities appear to believe was a deliberate crash.

A Reuters witness saw investigators pull a Nazi swastika flag from inside the truck, which plowed into barriers at Lafayette Square, a public area one block from the White House compound, on Monday evening.

She was fired for using her class room to make a political statement
You know, Glenn, the only way you'd be outraged is if a right-wing teacher was showing the Song of the South. Or The Birth of a Nation, which you say is a "great film". THEN you'd be pissed.

She was not trying to make a political statement. She was trying to let her kids enjoy themselves with a Disney flick, not realizing that because it happens to contain a gay character (it's really a very minor part of the film), that would trigger a snowflake in the school district.

There is a level of paranoia above which EVERYTHING is suspected as a political statement. The left does that too. They just have bigger words for it.

Visual storytelling is simultaneously very deep and very shallow. It's not articulate in revealing the exact intentions of the story teller, far from it. It is, however, very revealing in its depiction of what is going on in the picture and what it says that its makers did not really want it to say.

You see the fullest extent of this phenomenon in film schools, where one learns how to follow a story and sympathize with the characters, while at the same time noting where the light is coming from, what focal length the camera is using, and how well actors are creating their performances. It's also very evident at screenings of old movies, where everyone notices what technology was in use at the time, what the buildings looked like (especially on location), and what kind of cars were around at the time. Film history is a very fertile field in itself, as it reveals everything.

Best wishes Carmelo

Carmelo Anthony Is at Peace With His Retirement

This time, Carmelo Anthony is at peace.

That wasn’t the case the first time he contemplated the end of his career, back in November 2018. After a bizarre, head-scratching stint with the Rockets that ended when the team unceremoniously cast him off 10 games into the season, Anthony was forced to confront life without basketball.

Saki Akai Announces Retirement From Wrestling

For nearly 12 years, wrestler, model, and idol Saki Akai has been a staple of Japanese promotion DDT. Along the way, she's won the Iron Man Heavymetalweight Championship an astounding 23 times, while also fitting in a KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Championship reign and a run in DDT's sister promotion, Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling. But all good things must come to an end eventually, and with Akai now entering her 10th year with DDT, she's decided now is the time to walk away.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Akai announced she will be retiring on November 23, after the conclusion of DDT's Ultimate Party 2023 event. She would later clarify that her final match would take place on November 12 from Sumo Hall.

After years-long delay, DEA revokes license of drug distributor over opioid crisis failures.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration stripped one of the nation’s largest drug distributors of its license to sell highly addictive painkillers Friday after determining it failed to flag thousands of suspicious orders at the height of the opioid crisis.

The action against Morris & Dickson Co. that threatens to put it out of business came two days after an Associated Press investigation found the DEA allowed the company to keep shipping drugs for nearly four years after a judge recommended the harshest penalty for its “cavalier disregard” of rules aimed at preventing opioid abuse.

DEA Administrator Anne Milgram said in the 68-page order that Morris & Dickson failed to accept full responsibility for its past actions, which included shipping 12,000 unusually large orders of opioids to pharmacies and hospitals between 2014 and 2018. During this time, the company filed just three suspicious order reports with the DEA.
https://apnews.com/article/opioids-fent ... 2c3477390d
This action will most likely put it out of business since they need a license from the FDA to sell not only opioids but any other Scheduled drugs as well as prescription drugs. Can't say I'm sorry for them because they knew what they were doing and continued to do it for profit.

Doug Mastriano Says He Won't Run for Senate in Pennsylvania in 2024

A hard-right Pennsylvania state lawmaker said Thursday night that he will not challenge Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, leaving the GOP field wide open as Republican Party officials try to recruit a strong candidate in the moderate battleground state to help capture a Senate majority in 2024.

Doug Mastriano, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump in last year’s race for governor but lost in a landslide, said in a livestreamed appearance with his wife that he will not run for Senate “at this moment the way things currently are.”

LA Galaxy fire president Chris Klein amid nightmare start to MLS season, fan boycott

It finally happened — the LA Galaxy have parted ways with president Chris Klein, the team announced Tuesday.

Amid a nightmare start to the Major League Soccer season, little to nothing has gone right for the club which has just 9 points in 14 matches. Klein was at the center of much displeasure due to the franchise’s fall from grace and missing the playoffs in four of the last six seasons. Bad signings and a lack of accountability from the front office boiled up so much that it forced the fans into a boycott this season, calling for his removal from the club.

Two-star General

Maj. Gen. Bill Cooley, the former Air Force Research Laboratory commander who was convicted of abusive sexual contact last spring, will retire as a colonel on Thursday, two sources tell Air Force Times.

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall chose to demote the two-star general to a field-grade officer after the April 2022 trial, an Air Force Materiel Command spokesperson said Tuesday.

The judge found Cooley not guilty of the other two counts on the charge. He was sentenced to a reprimand and forfeiture of $54,550.

The case marked the first time a military court had issued a verdict in a case involving an Air Force general, as well as the first time sexual assault charges had led to criminal prosecution for an official so high in the chain of command.

Woman who accused Biden of sexually assaulting her in 1993 defects to Russia

(CNN) — A former staffer who accused Joe Biden of sexual assault has defected to Moscow and spoken to Russian state media in a news conference that lasted several hours.

Tara Reade drew headlines during the 2020 presidential race, when she accused then-candidate Biden of sexually harassing and assaulting her when she worked in his Senate office in 1993.

Earlier this month, TFG said “everybody wants to see the Open Championship” (British Open) played at his Turnberry gold resort in Scotland. Welllll, not quite everyone. It seems the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, who runs the British Open, is rejecting the idea of having it Turnberry is his ownership is still perceived as a serious security risk due to potential protests.
The 45th US president has been lobbying for his Ayrshire venue to be picked again, saying “everybody wants to see the Open Championship here”.

However, the R&A, which manages the world-renowned event, is understood to now flatly reject the prospect of selecting Turnberry in the near future. One source suggested Trump’s only option would be to sell up as his ownership is still perceived as a serious security risk due to potential protests.

Trump purchased Turnberry in 2014, five years after it last staged golf’s oldest major. The R&A’s chief executive, Martin Slumbers, first said in January 2021 that his organisation “had no plans to stage any of our championships at Turnberry and will not do so in the foreseeable future”.

Three years on, an R&A source told Telegraph Sport “our position remains unchanged”. The source added: “We have no plans to stage any of our championships there in the foreseeable future and will not return until we are convinced that the focus will be on the championship, the players and the course itself,” the insider added.

I don't golf and am am not much of a fan. But I did watch the NIL tournament this weekend for about 20 minutes.
It was horrible while all the players did come from the PGA and some were quite good there, the play on this tournament was very much sub par.
Obviously the players who received the big guaranteed money are no longer practicing at the same level they were before. While the balance of the players were PGA also rans and still playing like it.

I started playing golf in 1997 and took lessons in Sacramento. Best I ever shot was 100 and after about 10 years I gave it up because it just wasn't interesting enough and it was too expensive. I concentrated on bowling instead and since 2004 I've improved considerably to the point I'm asked to sub on other teams. I bowl at two Navy bases where games are four dollars each so it's relatively inexpensive after buying my bowling balls (four of them), bag, shoes, etc... One base an a PIN card where I can pay $100 for a card and bowl as many games as I want to for three months. I meet three friends who also have the card and we bowl six games on Wednesdays after the morning leagues finish.

I've never found watching golf on TV to be interesting or entertaining because they keep switching between different golfers. I do watch professional bowling because I like to see the styles the bowlers throw as well as picking up some tips from the commentators.

Amazon to pay over $30 million in FTC settlements over Ring, Alexa privacy violations

Amazon will pay the Federal Trade Commission more than $30 million to settle allegations of privacy lapses in its Alexa and Ring divisions, according to filings on Wednesday.

The agency filed a lawsuit alleging Amazon’s Ring doorbell unit violated a portion of the FTC Act that prohibits unfair or deceptive business practices, which Amazon settled by agreeing to pay $5.8 million.

Tuberville’s top military adviser bows out

Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-Ala.) national security adviser told POLITICO that he has resigned over a Washington Post story suggesting he was instrumental in orchestrating the senator’s controversial blockade of hundreds of senior military nominations.

A profile by the Washington Post on Friday depicted Morgan Murphy as taking credit for Tuberville’s hold, which has roiled the Department of Defense. The blockade is a response to the Pentagon’s abortion travel policy, which Tuberville opposes.

Trump Bucks. This one is more hilarious than the NFTs of Trump as an astronaut.

'Trump Bucks' retailers' websites taken down, days after being exposed for selling bogus currency
"Now if they could be arrested and put behind bars!" one buyer said.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/tr ... -rcna86916

The companies that appear to have swindled supporters of former President Donald Trump out of tens of thousands of dollars by peddling bogus “Trump Bucks” no longer have active websites just days after their businesses were exposed by NBC News.

The websites where the Colorado-based Patriots Dynasty, Patriots Future and USA Patriots companies were selling Official Trump 2024 Gold Cards to Trump Rebate Banking System (TRB) membership cards purportedly issued “by Donald Trump” himself are no longer active.

Similar websites that also promise “real patriots” will get rich if they buy the products remain active, but they have been disabled by the online retailer ClickBank, which connects the purveyors of the products to potential buyers.

“This site is no longer in service or has been disabled due to a terms of service violation” was the message that popped up when an NBC News reporter tried to make a purchase.

[snip][end]

Now look, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, I admit, but if somebody's selling you something for $99 that they claim you can redeem for $999 at a bank or a merchant, I would want to know the catch. I sure as heck wouldn't buy it. Things can appreciate in value, I suppose, but not instaneously.

LGBTQ+ youth charity quits Twitter over ‘increase in extreme views’ after Musk takeover

LGBT Youth Scotland, a charity for queer young people, has deleted its Twitter account over safety fears due to “increase in extreme views” following Elon Musk’s takeover.

Chief executive Dr Mhairi Crawford said that the charity deleted its Twitter account – which had more than 33,000 followers – because it felt this was the “only option” after Musk’s acquisition of the platform in October 2022.

Oregon Democrats vote to fine absent senators amid GOP walkout

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Senate Democrats plan to start fining their absent colleagues amid a month-long Republican walkout, a move they hope will pressure boycotting lawmakers to return to the chamber as hundreds of bills languish amid the partisan stalemate.

In a procedural move Thursday, Democrats voted to fine senators $325 every time their absence denies the chamber the two-thirds quorum it needs to conduct business. The amount reflects lawmakers’ average daily pay, according to the office of Democratic Senate President Rob Wagner.

City Jails No Longer Announcing Deaths Behind Bars, Angering Watchdogs

The city Department of Correction has abruptly stopped notifying the media when an incarcerated person dies and will no longer do so in the future.

“That was a practice, not a policy,” said new DOC chief spokesperson Frank Dwyer when asked about the lack of public notification about recent deaths behind bars. Dwyer took over the department’s press office a few weeks ago following a similar role at the Fire Department.
