EARTH....
Re: EARTH....
I split solar-terrestrial phenomena into another thread because while they might have a minor and poorly understood effect on our weather, they are basically space based.
The aurora lasted one night. Indeed, a strong flow of various charged particles shifted the planet's magnetic field, and when magnetic fields move in the presence of electric conductors, you have a generator by any other name. Along with excited gas molecules making aurora, the ground becomes charged and power companies can have long nights. Also satellites arc and have to be replaced sooner.
The solar explosions are huge. They're caused by intense magnetic fields around sunspots breaking or shorting out, thus liberating energy. Were the Earth anywhere near one, it would vaporize, but then it wouldn't last much longer that close to the sun anyway.
Not a flicker in LA. There was farther south but here it was foggy. Couldn't see it.
New York is farther north, and the photos of the aurora competing with Midtown Manhattan lights are rather striking. One shot making the rounds was of Central Park with aurora. THAT is bright.
------
There are some photos of the comet making the rounds. It's a big one. It's a major comet for sure, but it's awfully close to the sun. I like the ones that you see just by looking up on a clear night. Those are the ones that used to start wars and topple monarchs.

This one also charged the polar ionosphere more than most, and so you can forget about navigation aids for the duration at that latitude. GPS doesn't work, short wave radio doesn't work, and satellites need radio waves and those are being absorbed. This phenomenon is actually caused by the first high-energy particles reaching Earth within hours rather than days, and it tends to persist for 2-3 days.

Re: EARTH....
In general LA would be uninhabitable for a lot longer than that. Just disposing of the dead bodies would take months. Getting everyone's power back is six months easy, probably more. There's a certain sense of whistling past the graveyard inherent to living here. Maybe that's why the more tractable problems get ignored. Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.
Far as astronomy goes, the city light combines with the mist from the sea that gets trapped by the inversion layer, so you're lucky to see anything dimmer than Venus. The air used to be very good for astronomy above the inversion like on Mount Wilson, because the wind just didn't blow much at that altitude and all the pollution stayed below it. But they stuck another two million people in this arid little basin, and now it's not so great there either.
However, it seems like the latest generation of telescopes is in space. Different set of problems there.

They're gonna love it when the Earth becomes uninhabitable. They'll be right on camera until the power goes out, telling us to invest in funeral homes, graveyards, and undertakers.

Re: EARTH....
Your low grey rain sky always gives us the santa ana wind.
I hate santa ana wind. The first one is always the worst. It picks up all the toxic crud between the ocean and the desert that's been accumulating on everything for three or four months of LA sunshine, and it throws it at us. Then the hills, which have been drying out for the entire period, catch fire all at once and assets have to come from the entire North American continent to save the place. All the smoke and ash gets blown at us too. You can often pick up the ash and read a few words on it. The LA Times used to be common. Sometimes you'd see a portion of a headline about the fire.
For some reason, perhaps relating to ionization of the air, all this gives most people euphoria, but I just get allergies.

Santa Anna winds tend to pick up dust, pollution, pollen, etc.. and deposit it everywhere. I don't care much for Santa Anna winds mainly because the air is dry and full of dust which land on my car and I have to dust it off and wash my car windows. If we have normal humidity then that doesn't happen and my car stays shiny and clean.ZoWie wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2024 1:14 pm Your low grey rain sky always gives us the santa ana wind.

Oscar makes landfall in Cuba, could lead to 'humanitarian crisis': Updates
Oscar made landfall in eastern Cuba Sunday evening amid a power blackout, adding to fears that the storm may prove to be especially dangerous.
Oscar made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near the city of Baracoa shortly before 6 p.m. ET just hours after landfalling in the Bahamas, according to the National Hurricane Center. By 11 p.m. ET, Oscar's maximum sustained winds decreased from 75 mph to 70 mph.

This is on top of the previous days complete and total failure of the their electric generation system.
“ Cubans took to the streets in protest as widespread blackouts stretched into their fourth day, their concerns heightened as Hurricane Oscar crossed the island’s eastern coast with winds and heavy rain.”
https://apnews.com/article/cuba-power-b ... af0c5a6e75
“ Cuba's electrical grid collapsed again on Sunday, the fourth such failure in 48 hours, raising fresh doubts about a quick fix on an island already suffering from severe shortages of food, fuel and medicine.
The blackout, after weeks of rolling outages, sparked some small protests around the Caribbean island, where a tropical storm threatened to hamper efforts to restore power.
Cuba's national electrical grid first crashed around midday on Friday after the island's largest power plant shut down, sowing chaos and leaving around 10 million people in the dark. The grid has collapsed three times since, underscoring the precarious state of the country's infrastructure.”

At least Cuba won't have to worry about power failures, since it's already still off in the western 3/4 of the island. Even their radio broadcasts to spies have stopped.

New York City Could Start Implementing Water Restrictions
Uncommonly dry weather has spurred concerns in New York City, and one meteorologist said the city could soon start asking citizens to conserve water if the pattern continues. As of Monday, all of New York City was considered abnormally dry, which is the first stage in the U.S. Drought Monitor's map.
National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists have urged people in some Northeastern states to use caution with ignition sources, as conditions are favorable for wildfires. It's been the driest start to the autumn season in over a century, New York City news website Gothamist reported.

Hurricane Kristy becomes first Category 5 storm without El Niño since 2010
Hurricane Kristy strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean on Thursday evening, becoming the first hurricane to do so without an El Niño since Hurricane Celia in 2010.
This is a pretty interesting feat, as typically with an El Niño, you have warmer water on the east Pacific and also lower wind shear, lending to easier development of stronger storms.

Right, El Nino, or to be exact, the absence thereof, is as good a bet in weather forecasting as you'll ever get when it comes to the number and strength of tropical cyclones in the East Pacific. They should have been fewer and weaker. I don't know about the fewer part, but there's a cat 5 when there shouldn't have been this year.
But keep telling me that the climate doesn't change. With all the other bad ideas getting traction since the rise of Internet, at least that one can give me a good laugh at times.

Odd that the more stark the problem gets, the more we hear about illegal aliens causing every problem, and the more all of those people who consume too much media turn into malleable true believers.
