Wife's dad in Augusta is a completely different story. Whole town's electrical system is down, wife said 20 out of 26 substations with heavy damage, they are saying no electricity until at least Wednesday. Schools told to forget about school this week. Her dad's home had one old tree uprooted, other tree damage, but no damage to house, and new roof he had put on last year looks fine.

Wife's sister and her husband are true gun nuts supposedly ready for the Zombie Apocalypse (not kidding), and have a generator, but didn't think to get any gas for it before the storm (probably refuse to believe government weather alerts), and was all over trying to get gas yesterday, and couldn't. Looks like there's a handful of stations open today, Kroger's gas is open but rationing, and the line stretches for miles.

And yes, I think that's hilarious.

But hey, they've got an arsenal, so they're good.

Read an article that the damage at the Master's golf course has had heavy damage. Of course, the tournament was in the spring, so they've got time. But a lot of old growth trees are done for. It will probably look a lot different.

As for us - in Middle Tennessee, we were forecast for heavy rain (2-4 inches) and lots of wind. What we got were medium showers and NO wind at all! Maybe a half an inch total.

But in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, it was bad. I-40 through the canyon was closed, and I think some bridges out. Areas around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg (which is a beautiful area, I love it) has heavy flooding of their rivers and lots of closures.
It’s still raining in Cincinnati. So far 7”. But not heavy. Just continuous. We. Did get some high winds.

I-40 eastbound at the Tennessee/North Carolina line is no longer there. By that I don't mean the pavement washed away. The ground the pavement was on is no longer there.
I don't know how they are going to repair it. On one side is a mountain on the other side is a river.
It is a mountain pass known as The Gorge.

Expect westbound to become two lanes for awhile. I think something similar happened some years back.

Hurricane Helene wreaks havoc in US Southeast, at least 60 dead

Sept 29 (Reuters) - Southeastern U.S. states started a massive cleanup and recovery effort on Sunday after winds, rain and storm surges from Hurricane Helene snuffed out power for millions, destroyed roads and bridges and caused catastrophic flooding from Florida to Virginia.

The storm caused at least 60 deaths, according to state and local officials in South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia. Officials feared still more bodies would be discovered across several states.

Indeed the Atlantic has blown up all at once. The current storm prediction looks like a war zone. There are storms popping up all over the ocean. NHC's map currently shows five areas of concern. Isaac has weakened to a tropical storm, but the cone is little short of incredible, with a northeastward movement that may cause issues in Iceland, yes, Iceland. We do not typically associate Iceland with tropical features, but the usual people will continue to tell us that climate change is a liberal lie.

I'm getting tired of ranting about all this. It's been evident for two generations now that the climate was changing, and that there was a good chance that pollution was among the major causes. There was a lot of hand wringing, and Elon Musk saw a buck to be made in electric cars, and they had some kind of conference in Paris that said we were doomed if we didn't do something, and then nothing of substance happened.

the pattern changes seem to be...moisture moving to the east and dumping--making it up growing
More water due to atmospheric changes in the west leaving the west dry, taking the moisture
from the west dumping in across the eastern 'us'.

there is a lot of global coastal rising waters bringing atmospheric changes to weather patterns.
i think much of this change has been seen in other global places and what now happens is
a growing problem to 'us' coastals areas, ignored, covered over by celeb pols sucking up oxygen.

no one is talking about climate weather or patterns changing. and what we shall do.
...but then they cant stop GOP owned climate change: they cant fix what they fucked up
so its best to ignore it. RIGHT

i drove a good stretch of utah recently. farm land. or..dead land.
it had once moving, rolling IRR lines set in place.
thousands of acres. ten miles of 360* corn fields. far as the eye could see in any direction.

it looked weird. only one on the long 2laner i pulled over under one trees shade. got out
walked up into the corn field.
what the fuck am i seeing...all this corn is A)hanging on the vine B) dead C) all colored
D)dry dead brown with orange corn pods hard as rocks still on the cob hanging off the vine limbs.
LIMBS...they were that big.

why is all this corn being left to die. is this a water IRR issue??

do they leave this feed to..this condition, cut and still make some kind of ..fodder corn food
for some animals????
why is this massive amount of CORN FOOD being left to waste.....

Just saw a video on The Weather Channel about a "post-apocalyptic scene" at a lake in Asheville, NC.

It reminded me that some years ago, we looked at the possibility of buying a house on a lake in Asheville. There were always big advertisements out about them, and they were beautiful. My wife an I decided that, while we COULD afford it, it would stretch our budget beyond what made us comfortable. My wife called it being "house-poor", where you couldn't afford anything else because of your house.

I think she was right, and I'll thank her again - these people went through hell on that lake.

We have little worry about being flooded - we're up high, I checked before we bought our house. But we can take vacations, go see friends and family and have a nice but modest home. It's all we need.

Well if it's from kos it must be true. BTW in 1988 we had a similar storm go through my back field. In another 35 to 40 years it will happen again

Not only the frequency and wider affected areas, but also the severity of the phenomena. All predicted by people with credential in meteorology. Happening right on schedule. There are no surprises here unless you deny duplicated, peer-examined, and universally accepted research results.

two of three said it would go to feed roughage. all of it. dead leaf stem bugs dirt rock hard corns.
one said it would go to fuel. corn oil??...too dry for that.

its early october and just this massive corn land...would take weeks and weeks to harvest up.
cut it drop it roll it load it bale it load it...just out of the field. then move it.

im betting it goes to waste.

2 dead as weakened and ‘weird’ Typhoon Krathon slams into Taiwan

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — A weakened and “weird” Typhoon Krathon slammed into southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, hitting the island with a storm that has killed two people so far and forced it to shut down for a second day with hundreds of flights grounded and financial markets closed.

Krathon made landfall as a much weaker category 1 typhoon around midday at the major port city of Kaohsiung. The government, though, still warned people to stay at home given torrential rain, strong winds and storm surges coinciding with high tide.

Hurricanes after Helene: NWS tracking Hurricane Kirk, TS Leslie. What Georgia can expect

As the aftermath of Hurricane Helene continues to be felt in Georgia and other states, the National Weather Service is now keeping an eye on Hurricane Kirk, which is rapidly gaining strength in the eastern Atlantic.

Ryan Willis, meteorologist at the National Weather Service, told the Athens Banner-Herald that Kirk has intensified to a Category 3 hurricane, with winds of 120 miles per hour as of the latest advisory this morning. Behind Kirk, meteorologists are also tracking Tropical Storm Leslie.

Bay Area faces another day of extreme temperatures. When will the heat wave end?

Wednesday will bring another scorching day across the Bay Area, with near-record temperatures expected. Excessive-heat warnings remain in effect through Wednesday evening for most of the region, as temperatures climb into the 90s and 100s for the second consecutive day.

The upper-level ridge responsible for the heat will begin to weaken slightly on Wednesday, allowing for a stronger sea breeze by the afternoon. This should keep temperatures along the immediate coast a bit cooler. However, it won’t be enough to prevent temperatures in San Francisco and Oakland from reaching the 90s again.

We get these ridges every fall. San Francisco is famous for having its football weather in baseball season and its baseball weather in football season. LA always heats up in September, though this year it broke temperature records for a week and then got downright cold. Now it's hot again. October is when things get really crazy, with potential for gale force winds near the mountains and heat which lasts all night everywhere else. One of the bigger fires that started in the last go-round promptly re-ignited, and now we're spending a fortune keeping it out of several mountain resorts.

The phenomenon seems to be caused by cooling over the Four Corners region and the Rockies. It creates falling air and high pressure areas, reversing the wind direction and causing considerable compressional and/or adiabatic heating when the moving air comes over the various mountain ranges on its way to the coast. What you get on the ground is temperatures in the high 90s which can actually go up at night into the 100s, all with a humidity that's so low that they couldn't measure it until they got better instruments a few years back.

RH in the area of 5% is typical. Your skin dries up and your hair becomes a Van de Graaf generator. Raymond Chandler wrote a classic passage about the psychological effect, saying that it's when wives look at the carving knife blade, then at their husbands' necks. Indeed, crime spikes right before the phenomenon becomes measurable, because people sense that something is about to go very wrong.

Ordinarily we abandon LA for New York when this yearly phenomenon starts up. Any time the weather in New York is more attractive than LA, you know LA has to be bad. This year, for work reasons, we are going later. It is not fun being here.

Pilot flying Helene rescue missions in NC threatened with arrest

LAKE LURE, N.C. (WJZY) – When Jordan Seidhom woke up Saturday morning, he saw a Facebook post that tens of thousands of people were commenting on and sharing.

A family was stranded on a mountain in Banner Elk, North Carolina. They had run out of water a day earlier and had just enough food to last less than two days.

Hurricane Helene now one of the deadliest storms to hit the U.S. this century

Hurricane Helene's death toll surpassed 200 on Thursday as rescue crews searched for survivors, one week after the major storm made landfall in Florida and brought flooding rains across the U.S. Southeast.

The big picture: The at least 215 deaths confirmed so far make the storm the third-deadliest of the 21st century, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 (1,392 deaths) and Hurricane Maria in 2017 (at least 2,975 deaths).
