See, there we have real tornadoes, not the wussy ones that get everyone going when they happen in LA every 8 years or so. This time of year in the alley, we always seem to lose a town somewhere. I've seen the same storm chaser footage you have, and the closest thing to a nuke zone is a town out on the plains that was simply deleted by an EF-5. It even removes the top layer of soil, leaving it all plowed and cleared and ready to plant corn.

Tornadoes in LA do not remove soil. They make holes in walls.

There’s a 5-planet parade in the sky over NJ. Tonight may be the best night for viewing

Get your telescopes ready, there is a party among the stars.

New Jersey residents have a chance to see five planets — Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Uranus, and Mars — align in a rare event in the sky on March 28.

Justice Department sues Norfolk Southern over derailment

The federal government filed a lawsuit against railroad Norfolk Southern over environmental damage caused by a train derailment on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border that spilled hazardous chemicals into nearby creeks and rivers.

The U.S. Department of Justice said it’s seeking to hold the company accountable for “unlawfully polluting the nation’s waterways and to ensure it pays the full cost of the environmental cleanup,” in the lawsuit filed Thursday.

With the double-digit number of atmospheric rivers hitting California this year it's no wonder that the snowpack in the state is 236% above seasonal norms.
Following a remarkable winter in which back-to-back “atmospheric rivers” pummeled the West Coast, California’s snowpack levels have climbed to an all-time high, according to state meteorologists.

The state’s average snow-water equivalent — the amount of water contained in a snowpack — soared to 236 percent of seasonal norms on Thursday, surpassing a 1982-1983 record, the California Department of Water Resources reported.

While water content in the Northern California snowpack was only 191 percent of seasonal norms, Central and Southern measurements respectively reached 234 percent and 297 percent, the agency noted.

This feat was the result of an unusually wet winter, in which 17 atmospheric rivers barreled into California and 31 total swept across the West Coast at large, according to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

And a few months ago they were predictions of another dry winter. Glad they were wrong. I would love to see Lake Shasta again. Imo when full it might be the most beautiful site in the USA. One of the few places which looks like the post card.

If HR1 gets passed, you might see all kinds of oil derricks all around it. Won’t that make it more beautiful?

I checked the water levels for Lake Shasta. When full, Lake Shasta is 1,067 feet above sea level. It is currently at 1,038 feet above sea level or about 28 feet from being "full."

Mammoth Lake recorded 700 inches of snow this year. That's nearly 60 feet of snow that's waiting to melt which will undoubtedly cause flooding. While the atmospheric rivers have refilled most reservoirs the snow they've produce is a time bomb ticking for when the weather warms.

Paris votes overwhelmingly to ban shared e-scooters

In a major blow to shared micromobility companies Lime, Dott and Tier, Paris has voted to ban rental e-scooters from its streets. Many in the industry fear the move in Paris, where free-floating scooters initially took off in 2018, will have ripple effects in other cities.

Paris has been one of the most heavily regulated e-scooter markets, something companies have pointed to as an example of how they can play nice with cities. Yet, despite limiting scooter top speeds to as slow as 10 kilometers per hour (about 6 miles per hour) and requiring riders to use dedicated parking areas or pay fines, Paris has become the first city to completely reverse its policy on offering contracts to shared micromobility companies.

I was in Paris when the rental scooter thing first hit big there. They were everywhere you looked. Having been through the wars in LA, where it was not handled well at all and finally died a natural death after one grotesque accident too many, I was looking forward to see what would happen in a place as different from here as Paris.

It seems apparent from Nooz accounts that the situation did get as bad in Paris as it got in LA before entropy took its course, but in France they tend to take politics a lot more seriously than most Americans do, so they actually put it to a vote. However, the result was decided by one side getting its people out, just like here. 89% voted to ban the damn things. The other side was apparently too busy riding around town getting in people's ways and knocking over pedestrians to bother to vote.

I was in Paris back in the early 90s long before these scooters came into being. The city is beautiful and I'm glad I never experienced seeing the scooters on the streets and sidewalks for it would have ruined the experience for me. We've had the scooters in the San Diego area for a number of years and when they first appeared you'd find them left everywhere blocking the sidewalk, on the streets, in parking lots, etc.. They are an eyesore. The problem lies with the people renting them being so self-centered they don't care there are people other people on foot who use the same sidewalk. They dart around and in-between pedestrians, zip into the streets to pass pedestrians, won't obey traffic signs/signals, etc...

I congratulate Paris for what they did.

You just nailed the problem.

I can't speak for Paris, wasn't there long enough, and my French isn't what it should be. Makes it hard to communicate deep stuff.

But that was the experience in LA, yes. It was not the existence of the scooters that posed the problem, hardware is neutral. It was the attitude of the users. They considered themselves to be the vanguard of a moral campaign against driving and polluting, and if you said anything it got you on their bad side and you never heard the end of it. Of course it was partially an age thing, since everything in LA is.

UCLA banned them after some schmuck ran down a visiting scientist walking on their way to deliver a presentation to a learned group of REAL climate people trying to make a difference. The resulting injuries put said visiting scientist into UCLA's acclaimed medical center. Speech cancelled.

Beverly Hills not only banned them but forced the companies which littered the streets with them to geofence them so they'd stop operating at the city line. (They have GPS, it's how the companies keep track of them.)

LA of course never bans anything, you can't get a majority to agree on anything, and the city is essentially ungovernable. The problem took care of itself, mostly by attrition.

My city, Coronado, has banned the rental scooters but you can still own and use one. We're a little more fortunate in that we're across the bay from San Diego and the only ways to get here on a scooter, legally, are by one of two ferries and along the 7-mile long Silver Strand. Whenever I go to San Diego, I see these scooters all over the place. It's not as bad as it was before the pandemic but it's still an eyesore.

Another problem is that the lithium batteries can explode, so owners have a problem if they keep them indoors to avoid theft. It caused one of the most spectacular fires in Manhattan this year, and buildings are starting to ban them.

Over the past week or so the local news has aired stories about two houses that caught fire because an electric bike's lithium battery exploded while being recharged. The latest one the battery was being recharged overnight when it exploded and someone in the house tried to put out the battery fire with water which only made it worse.

I don't own an electric bike or scooter but if I did I wouldn't leave it unattended while it recharged. I'm a bit too cautious when leaving things unattended while they're operating. Whenever I do laundry, I stick around until the washer and dryer have completed their loads. I don't want to come back and find water all over the floor or that there was a lint fire in the dryer.

Historic EF3 tornado confirmed in Delaware

At least one fatality has been reported after a historic EF3 tornado, packing winds of 140 mph, ripped a 14-mile-long path through parts of Delaware Saturday. Following a severe weather outbreak that spawned 80 tornadoes Friday across the Midwest and South, another outbreak formed across the Northeast Saturday.

Daniel Bawel, 79, died after his home in Greenwood, Delaware, which is located about 25 miles south of Dover, collapsed during the storms Saturday, his family confirmed, ABC6 reported. His wife of 55 years survived.
