Biden orders federal buildings, vehicles to adopt renewable energy by 2050

The White House's renewable energy push now includes a transformation of the federal government. President Biden has issued an executive order that would require the government to stop buying combustion engine vehicles by 2035, and to switch all buildings to renewables and other zero-carbon energy sources by 2050. The administration willbuy only carbon-free electricity by 2030, and aims to cut building emissions in half by 2032.

Biden saw the measure as a way to "lead by example" and encourage both a "carbon pollution-free" electricity industry by 2035 and net zero emissions for the entire economy by 2050. The federal government is the largest employer, energy user and land owner in the US, the President said, and its shift to renewables could influence private businesses.

There would not be a 2-year La Nina without climate change. There was never one before. They just didn't last that long. The whole phenomenon wasn't discovered until something like 20 years ago.
la nina brings the wet, brings the warmer weather the less snow and the more melt of any ice or snow, if any.

...Throughout history and into modern times, forests have been razed to make space for agriculture and animal grazing, and to obtain wood for fuel, manufacturing, and construction.. Deforestation has greatly altered landscapes around the world. About 2,000 years ago, 80 percent of Western Europe was forested; today the figure is 34 percent.

Most accurately, El Nino and La Nina are a global oscillation that causes sea surface temperatures in parts of the Pacific Ocean to vary on an irregular cycle, as propagated by Kelvin waves. The waves actually change the height of the water surface slightly, and that can be measured from space.

I had all this explained to me by a Ph.D. candidate at USC Ocean Physics.

Like any system on this scale, this one is driven by energy from the sun, more of which is retained by the atmosphere due to human activity, though volcanoes and asteroid impacts figure in the longer history of it all. It self-amplifies when it contributes to deforestation and/or forest fires. That's why El Nino / La Nina seems to be getting stronger and more disruptive.

The oscillations have smaller waves within them. We seem to be in one of these right now. The atmospheric river is predicted to shift way to the south, and soon. Here in LA, we are being advised to rig for heavy weather.

Knocked down an amazon warehouse outside St. Louis with people inside.

Amazon warehouse collapses outside Edwardsville as tornadoes, storms pummel region
An Amazon warehouse partially collapsed near Pontoon Beach in Madison County, trapping employees inside, as tornadoes and strong storms blew through the St. Louis region throughout the evening. There was widespread damage from the storms in multiple counties, including homes and other buildings destroyed, wires down and thousands of people without power.

Police and fire agencies from throughout the region responded to the area of the warehouse collapse, outside of Edwardsville near Interstates 255 and 270. Multiple injuries were possible, and there were reports of perhaps 100 or more people trapped inside, although those numbers were not confirmed.

KY Governor: Possibly 70-100 Dead from Overnight Tornadoes

Overnight tornadoes in several states may have left dozens dead. Mayfield, Kentucky, was hard hit. A candle factory in the town has collapsed, trapping people beneath the rubble.

Hard to get definitive data on much of anything. Storm chasers aren't traditionally out in December (for good reason). In a multi-state outbreak like this there's a lot of stuff in a lot of different places to sort out, and also this time there's a much longer night before they can even get started.

First assessment is pretty bad. EF-4 to EF-5 damage in a number of places spread over several states, several towns turned into nuke zones, a factory and warehouse destroyed with mass casualties in both incidents, and power gone all over the region.

It's going to be one of history's great outbreaks, and most certainly the only one in December. April and May are more normal.

But go ahead righties, keep telling me that climate change is a liberal hoax.

Scientists discover planet 10 times size of Jupiter orbiting superhot massive stars
Scientists have discovered a planet 10 times as massive as Jupiter orbiting a pair of stars in another solar system, according to new research.

The research, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, points to the discovery of a planet named b Centauri (AB)b or b Centauri b, with an image captured by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile.

The planet is 10 times as massive as Jupiter and “one of the most massive planets ever found,” according to the observatory.

Also the planet orbits b Centauri, a two-star system that has at least six times the mass of the Sun and is 325 light-years away from Earth.

That makes it the most “massive system around which a planet has been confirmed,” according to a statement from the observatory. The statement also explained, "Until now, no planets had been spotted around a star more than three times as massive as the Sun.” ......
That means you could fit 3500 earths in this planet. 2 suns imagine the different configurations of seasons and days and time that could mean.

there isnt much melt coming off the snow on the juniper branches in direct sun. the snow is going away slowly
but its not dripping, down, to the ground.
its evaporating into the air and will fall down to the ground somewhere back east.

i hear theyve been calling it 'atmosphere rivers'. they flood lowlands.

Tornado warning in Florida right now.

Evidence supports initial observations that one of last night's tornadoes was among the biggest and longest lasting ever observed in the US, with a path hundreds of miles long. It went through 4 states.

And it's December.

Republicans on twitter remain unconvinced that anything real has happened to the climate, basically saying that, well, shit happens.

California is bracing for heavy rains this week. An atmospheric river, aka Pineapple Express, is scheduled to arrive in the San Diego area early Tuesday morning. The local new is saying we'll get 1 - 4" of rain West of the mountains. Announcements have been made telling people who live in flood prone areas that free sand and sand bags are available at police, fire, and sheriff departments. If a disaster declared before the storm hits people can fill their sand bags using sand from local beaches.

There are a couple of areas that always flood whenever we get heavy rains. There is one road in Mission Valley between two malls that floods and it seems every time it does some idiot tries to drive through it only to get stuck and have to be rescued. Another area is Pacific Beach were there are a lot of small stores and restaurants.

Here in the Bay Area we are already receiving the rain. It not suppose to stop until Tuesday or Wednesday. There is suppose to heavy snow the Sierra's as well.

I heard the Sierra's are expecting 5 - 7 feet of snow. That's good and hopefully they can get more snow throughout the year to help with the snow pack which translates to how much the reservoirs will rise especially in our drought.

Yeah, the snow pack is what stores water, and as we know it's melting a month earlier now. Lots of snow is good.

It hasn't snowed here yet. It seems to be a fairly warm storm.

What we've had is 0.4 inches of slow rain so far. It started about midnight.

That brings Dec totals up to 1.20 inches, which when added to Nov's 1.01 inches and Oct's 4.24 inches equals 6.44 inches for the whole fall period so far.

That's not very much considering that I've seen three years when we got over 6 feet of rain during the whole year. What would be normal would be 10 to 15 inches so far this fall.

The gophers did a great job of aerating the soil this year with an open hole for about every square foot of surface area, so there's been no run off. All of the rain has soaked in. This is the first year I've ever seen them aerate the soil to this extent. I think for them it was a do or die situation, they have to have more water and if it will not rain more they have to conserve what rain there is.

Every year that passes I become more and more sure that gophers are the most pivotal key species in this environment. Without them there would be no soil here. It would be a wasteland not a wonderland.

Apparently the atmospheric river pattern that started too far north up in BC has now moved all the way south to where it usually is, then even a little farther south, which is when LA gets it. Since the underlying ENSO cycle seems to still be on the cold side, I don't expect a whole winter of heavy rain down here, but in LA one storm is generally enough to put the whole place into damage control mode. In New York, it's well I guess it'll be hard to get a taxi today. In LA, it's disaster time, and expensive.

Because Southern California gets so little rain, when it does rain people forget how to drive in the rain. They think doing 65 on the highway in the rain isn't dangerous. Going through flooded roads is fine. Driving with your lights off is no problem. Tailgating because the car in front of you isn't going fast enough is SOP. The best thing, if you can do it, is not to drive while it's raining. I rarely drive when it's raining and when I do it's normally a short distance on city streets where the speed limit is 25 or 30 mph. Of course, many people who do have to drive in the rain do so because the need to get to or from work. For them, please slow down, keep your headlights on, increase the distance between your car and the car in front of you, and please, please use your turn signals.

Lemee see, we took the bikes out of partial mothballs and went for a ride on DEC. 1st. just to be able to say we rode in December. Yup, the weather had been that mild. It was quickly followed by a sudden drop to 2 degrees for a couple days, then back to mild weather. Shortly there after we received a nice snow fall coming in from the south west. It dropped about a foot and a half in some areas, we got 8 inches. It was warm enough last night that we had a good rain fall. It's 52 now. The snow is about gone. For good measure, it looks like we are about to receive what past through the west a bit ago. Rain, high winds, turning to sleet and snow tonight.

Freezing rain and snow on tree's and power lines. Wonderful. That always goes well.

Bizarre deep-sea fish have been washing up on California beaches recently. Why? No one knows but these fish tend to live in depths of 650 0 2,600 feet so maybe something in the deep oceans are happening to kill these fishes.
Several bizarre-looking deep-sea fish have mysteriously washed up on California's beaches this year, leaving marine biologists baffled.

The latest Pacific footballfish to be washed ashore in the state was spotted near Encinitas last Friday, according to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Pacific footballfish are very rarely seen given they are typically found at depths of between 650 and 2,600 feet, according to Frable. Only 31 known specimens have ever been collected worldwide and it has never been seen in the wild, so scientists know very little about the species.

The specimens that were collected recently appeared to be in surprisingly good condition and don't appear to have any indications that they experienced trauma, such as an attack or poisoning.

In addition to the football fish, a Lancetfish also washed up on shore in La Jolla.

Perhaps they died of natural causes and washed up in places where they normally wouldn't, due to changes in ocean currents caused by climate change and La Nina. Time will tell.
