Winter's Silent Killer: College Student Dies From Carbon Monoxide While Charging Phone In Car

The storm knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of people across the Northeast.

Someone's missing a commercial opportunity. Obviously running the car indoors because it's too cold outdoors is not how you charge a cell phone in a power outage. There needs to be a device with a big enough battery to get it done. Something like a computer UPS but not as big or expensive.

Planetary parade on Feb 28th. Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Jupiter will appear low in the sky in nearly a straight line.
Sky-gazers will have the opportunity to see six planets in the sky on Saturday, weather permitting, according to NASA.

Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Jupiter will be visible to the naked eye, whereas Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars or a telescope, according to NASA. Viewers do not have to worry about wearing protective eyewear as they would to watch a solar eclipse.

The event is visible anywhere on Earth — with best views at twilight. Early birds should try to glimpse the planetary parade before sunrise, and for night owls the best visibility will be right after sunset, Haviland said.

The best viewing times vary by location, however, she explained via email. The planets need to be roughly 10 degrees or higher above the horizon to be visible. If they are too low, they will be obscured by Earth’s atmosphere, she added.

Yes, you're in the part where the jet stream goes well into northern Canada, when in a normal year it would be somewhere around Minnesota. I don't know what your weather's like, but I do know that statistics dating to 1845 confirm that this was SoCal's warmest winter ever measured. We've already had two days in the 90s (F).

You might also want to thank your higher power that you didn't have to spend this catastrophic "winter" in the NE US.

Up until this year, the blizzards and/or ice storms had become so rare that we were spending more time than ever in New York. Months at a stretch, and loving it. People who were born there were telling us with straight faces that there would never be a major snow storm in Manhattan again. Now we know that that's like when people told us that drumpf was a peace candidate.

This winter the weather has sucked in both places, though at least in LA you don't have to shovel 90 degree temperatures in February. You just have to remember how to run the heat and air conditioning in the same day, put money aside to pay gas and electric bills, not go much of anywhere, and yes, try not to scratch your bug bites.

All this and another war too. I feel awfully old.

As a kid, I enjoyed the snow when we lived in Connecticut and Rhode Island. We even had snow in Memphis and Virginia. As an adult, the snow presented different problems like driving to work, clearing the driveway and sidewalk, the wet and cold weather, etc. I've had enough of snow as an adult and fortunately I no longer have that problem. The last time I was in snow country was in January, 2022 when a friend and I drove from San Diego to Reno. We intended to take I-80 from Sacramento to Reno but because of chain conditions we took State Route 50 to South Lake Tahoe. Driving through there we saw where the snow plows had piled the snow 12 feet high. I know I couldn't stand living in those conditions. I

Los Angeles is tying or breaking daily high temperature records pretty much every week, and has been since mid January. These would be hot days in July, but it's March. We are warned that next week could be triple digits.

The city government advises us to run air conditioning. That's not exactly the best advice for the half of the population which doesn't have it because in LA you don't usually need it.

Same thing to the South of you in San Diego. We're in the 80s today and tomorrow and high 70s beginning on Sunday for the next seven days. I have no air conditioning so what I do is open the windows in the early morning to let in the cool air and then around mid-morning I close them and the drapes to keep the cool air in. I came home early afternoon when the temperature hit 80 and it was about 10 degrees cooler inside.

80? Lucky you. We're 67 at night, then it goes to 94 in the afternoon. For maybe two days a week, it only gets to maybe 85 in the day, but never for longer than that. People are running the heat (gas bill) at night and the a/c (electric bill) in the day. No one knows how to dress. Summer shirts came out in late January.

The weather people say there hasn't been a pattern like this since 1948. I wouldn't know, since I wasn't born yet.

ok Zow....THIS IS STUNNINGLY DANGEROUS..
TEMPS YOUR WAY EXPECTED TO HIT HIGH NINETIES FOR NEAR INDEF TIME. SOME SOCAL AREAS TO HIT 100 DEGREES.
WTF.

OUR POLS CONTINUE TO IGNORE A CHANGING CLIMATE CUZ THEY CANT REPAIR WHAT THEYVE TOTALLY
FUCKED UP, BUT THEY WILL KEEP ON SCREWING WITH OTHER COUNTRIES TO DISTRACT FROM THE
MAJOR ISSUES BEING HEAT STARVATION DEHYDRATION HERE in US. BOTH HUMAN ANIMAL AND VEG.
WAR IS ALWAYS A GOOD METHOD TO DISTRACT AND DETACH FROM THE EVIL THESE PALE MALES
BLAME OTHERS FOR, WHILE THEY LOOT THE LOCALS AND POCKET UNTOLD HEAPS OF MONEY.
MEANWHILE CHILDREN DIE TAXES SKYROCKET THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THESE WAR CHOICES WHILE
LYING EVERY TIME THEY SPEAK....GET PAID LOTSA MONIES FREE TRAVEL FREE FOOD FREE HOUSING
FREE VEHICLES GAS THEY DONT HAVE TO PAY FREE MED ANYWHERE THEY CAN FLY FOR FREE TO
FIND IT, ALL WHILE TELLING MERICANS HOW GOOD THEY EACH HAVE IT.

MEANWHILE HALF THIS CONTRY IS BECOMING DESERT COVERED IN CRAP METAL PILED ALL OVER THE
LAND AS THO WE GROW METAL, big tank farms cover many areas of once grand and lovely forests and
grasslands now much of this, our contry, is a junk pile left by those pale males who continue to reap
billions from the degredation they dump on the people they make pay for the DAMAGE which left
the people not much better off than those living in ME countries all dry and left to war.

THEYRE USING THIS LATEST WAR as a prelude to a hot dry growing season where food and water becomes a "treat"
war helps these insane males suck up vast amounts of all the items the voters also need and the voters dont
get shit but commercials, ads, telling how great the pols ARE who DO NOTHING BUT SUCK UP TAX MONIES
AND SELL THE RE THE WERE HANDED NOW POCKETING MILLIONS WHILE BEGGING YOU FOR A VOTE TO KEEP
THE NOW RICH POLS IN THE RUNNING.
IF CAPITALIZM IS SO WORTHY WHY IS 'US' THE ONLY SOURCE BURIED BENEATH IT.

RICH FREELY FLY OVER AROUND THE EARTH THEY CAN SEE THE DAMAGE THEY SEE WHATS LEFT,
THEY CAN SEE THE TANK FARMING LEFTOVERS, THEY KNOW HUMANKIND IS ON SOME EDGE OF
EXISTENCE...THEY KNOW IT IS NOT FIXABLE IN ANY SHORT FASHION. THEY SEE THE DAMAGE THEIR
POLICIES LEFT BEHIND.

they dont want you to notice these things so give the people another ME war distraction!! its worked well
for so long.
keep buying the islands zuk...the rich need your help.

LA got a fairly normal rainfall, but it all came in two big storms before summer started in late January. Everything since is like July, except it gets dark sooner.

One has to look at the upper level weather to really see how fouled up it is this year. Set your weather app to 500 millibars instead of sea level and see how whacko the jet stream has become. It's been in this weird bent mode for several months now, and the Pacific Ocean is El Nino warm in what was shaping up as a La Nina year. That's why the polar vortex collapsed in the eastern US and the western US had a second summer with longer nights.
