Weather Channel is all over the Eastern storms. They make it sound downright apocalyptic in places that don't usually have winter storms this bad, like Texas and Louisiana. As we know, Texas went off the grid. Hope people there are stocking up on candles and barbecue fuel. Dumb politically motivated actions have real consequences when reality comes to call.

Extreme Cold in U.S., Six Deaths in New York Possibly Linked to Freezing

The body of a 52-year-old man found Sunday morning on a Queens street has become the sixth death in New York potentially linked to the extreme cold wave that has hit much of the U.S. East Coast since the weekend.

New York police said officers responded around 10:30 a.m. to a 911 call at the corner of 96th Street and 34th Avenue in the North Corona section of Queens. The man was found outdoors, unconscious and unresponsive. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene about 40 minutes later.

How Mamdani Has Met His First Major Governing Test

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has tackled his first major test since he was sworn into office, readying the city for a historic winter storm that dropped more than a foot of snow in some areas over the weekend.

Winter Storm Fern, which forecasters predicted could affect more than 230 million people across the country, brought heavy snowfall, damaging ice, and below-freezing temperatures to a number of states over the past few days. The inclement weather led to thousands of canceled flights, as well as power outages that affected more than 1 million people. More than a dozen people died during the storm, including seven in New York City. The deaths in New York City are still under investigation.

Snow triggers road mishaps across Charlotte + train vs. tractor-trailer in Gastonia

Drivers "traveling at unsafe speeds" caused many of the wrecks in Mecklenburg County during Saturday's monster snow storm, a state highway official said.

"We have seen a lot of wrecks in Mecklenburg County," Michael Mariano, the NCDOT Division 10 maintenance engineer over Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, Stanly and Anson counties said at a news conference. Speed was to blame in most of them, he said. Mariano urged people to "stay off roads if possible" during the storm.

Northeast faces winter's coldest weekend: life-threatening wind chills, possible power outages

The Northeast is facing its coldest weekend of the winter as an Arctic blast brings dangerously low temperatures, strong winds, and the potential for power outages.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said the Arctic front swept through the region overnight Friday, Feb. 6, into Saturday, Feb. 7, accompanied by snow showers and squalls that created slippery road conditions.

It's crazy. It's a local manifestation of a global anomaly, in which the atmosphere has stopped behaving the way it usually does. No, I do not know why. My degree is in movies.

We got 1.8 inches in a few hours. We're pretty much drought-proof for the year now, but there's two more rounds coming.

TV programs are interrupted regularly by sine wave tones and dire warnings. We were supposed to have a tornado yesterday, but instead the sun came out. The nooz tried bravely to find pictures of hills coming down, but had to make do with close shots of mud in the gutters. People all got the Genasys app after the fires last year, but it shows that all the fuss is way in the mountains. The people in the mountains are celebrating, because there will be a ski season after all. For once SUVs are in their element, but the drivers don't know how to chain up, so it doesn't matter.

We were supposed to get about 1- 2 inches from the storms. The first one was on Monday and San Diego received 1 inch while across the bay we received only .57 inches. I emptied our complex' four rain barrels in anticipation of heavy rains but fortunately, we didn't get them. Honestly, I hardly noticed it was raining. The storm coming overnight will add about .25 inches of rain so it's not a big deal for us.

Nothing here, but a few miles away the city of LA carefully staged pump trucks in an area notorious for flooding. When the rain started, no one showed up to operate the pumps. A large number of stores had severe damage to merchandise.

The city council member was already ballistic about the traffic hazards near UCLA, now she's screaming about that too. She's learning that being on the LA city council is like being a captain with no crew.

The local news tried to play up the damages but really it was just a couple of trees that fell over, some minor flooding, and the usual car accidents because people forget how to drive in the rain.

One person is still missing but presumed dead, officials said, as searchers fight near-whiteout conditions. Six others in the party survived, ranging in age from 30 to 55 years old.

What part of "Don't ski/snowmobile in the back country right after a major storm," was the problem this year? Even I'm smart enough to know that, and I live where everything goes to pot after an inch of rain.

Mamdani’s New Chief Climate Officer Wants to Make New York a ‘Better Place to Live’

In Louise Yeung’s decade of work in New York City government, she has helped rebuild flood infrastructure after Hurricane Sandy, worked to make streets and tunnels more resilient to climate change and ensured that the city’s financial investments aligned with its climate goals.

In her new role as Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s chief climate officer, Yeung aims to help New Yorkers see how climate change impacts their daily lives.

39,860 natural adult Chinook salmon returned to Klamath River 2 years after dam removal completed!
A total of 69,852 salmon returned to river, including tributaries, in 2025

A total of 39,860 adult fall-run Chinook salmon returned to spawn in the Klamath River and its tributaries in the fall of 2025, two years after dam removal was completed.

That’s according to the just-released Review of 2025 Ocean Salmon Fisheries published by the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) on February 18: www.pcouncil.org/...

The return was 205 percent of the preseason prediction of 19,417 adults, according to the document used to help craft West Coast commercial, Tribal and recreational salmon fishing season alternatives every year in preparation for the PFMC’s meeting in March 2026.

This is my livelihood Winter Storms have been a part of my life for 50 years i'm used to this weather

Maps show snow totals, blizzard warnings for major winter storm

More than 40 million people are under blizzard warnings Monday as a historic winter storm strikes the East Coast with heavy snow and fierce winds. In many parts of the Northeast it is forecast to be the biggest winter storm in nearly a decade, with up to 2 feet of snow expected in some areas before it's all over.

Blizzard warnings stretch from Maryland to Maine and governors in eight states and several major cities declared states of emergency.

Webcams don't show anything that hasn't happened before in NYC. Manhattan has underground power, so lights still seem to be on. That's more than most people could say after Sandy. Webcams show that it's snowing in Little Italy, but nothing like a blizzard. You can see clear down the street.

I think there was a misconception created by the media that it was never again going to snow very much in NYC because of global warming, but that's not how the underlying math works. I was going balls to the wall posting about that because I want to cut through all the hooey on the subject.

Climate change loads the dice and changes the odds a bit, but it's still the same game. Polar vortices will still collapse and all hell will still break loose in various places. Every time you hear about a winter weather event in the east, LA will be unbearably hot and dry, and everyone will get some kind of allergy. This has a real cause, something to do with the resulting jet stream, which looks like a giant sine wave with a dip in the east and a bump in the west. The east becomes a suburb of Canada and the west gets desert Mexico. Very un-American. It is one of the few reliable bets in weather forecasting.

Jet stream remains sinusoidal. East is digging out, west is heating up again. This sells a lot of real estate in LA, but I still hate it. 90 degrees in February is just wrong.

Summer came in January this year. People in LA are getting mosquito bites. Raccoons are fucking on our deck, waking us up with ghoulish noises at 2 AM. Nothing that wouldn't happen in June, but it isn't June.

It beats a foot of snow on our driveway, I suppose, but not by much. It just feels wrong, that's all. I get a distinct impression that I'm trapped in hell with the devil running my country.
