In LA, the land is already developed, but right now we see a phenomenon where owners of big rental office buildings downtown are making more money by converting them to data centers. Nobody wanted to fight the traffic working downtown, so now they become the traffic in Santa Monica, Westwood, and Beverly Hills.
One Wilshire, which is indeed at the origin of Wilshire Blvd downtown, has been a data center for years now. Others are following suit. I would imagine that the electric power system will eventually have problems with the increased demand in an area with pretty old utility infrastructure.

A weather phenomenon known as microbursts caused downed trees, collapsed roofs and flash flooding damage in the Philadelphia region on Saturday.

I've seen what micro-bursts can do. In the late 80s, during an exercise, our AF medical unit set up a "field hospital" tents on a Friday for a base exercise starting on Monday. It was getting windy so myself and a friend decided to check to make sure the tents were still staked and secure. I parked my car about 20 feet from one set of tents and started checking the guide ropes. All of a sudden, a huge burst of wind hit picking up two sets of tents, about 30 feet long each, and we watched then tumble over each other and get blown over a chain-linked fence topped with barbwire. We later found out it was a micro-burst that destroy most of the tents. Never underestimate the power of the wind.
I believe it. I've seen lots of footage of tents, bounce houses full of kids, and similar structures becoming airborne in microbursts. It really is amazing what air molecules can do when they have injections of meteorological energy.

I received a message on my phone from the Alert San Diego app with an extreme heat warning and heat advisory for the county from the deserts to the coast. Deserts will be 110, mountains and inland valleys in the mid 90s, and the coastal areas in the high 70s. Since I'm along the coast (a 20 minute walk to the ocean) it's bearable but our humidity is 60% so it makes it feel hotter.

The National Weather Service in San Antonio said a “large and deadly flood wave” was barreling down the same river wrecked by floods last summer when two dozen children and counselors were killed at Camp Mystic.
After a slow start to Canada’s 2026 fire season, activity picked up by the end of June amid dry, warm conditions and returned closer to the 25-year average. By mid-July, almost 850 fires were actively burning across the country, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. More than 180 of those were burning in Ontario.
This NOAA-21 image, acquired on the afternoon of July 14, 2026, shows smoke billowing from the Ontario fires. Winds carried the smoke primarily southeast over much of the southern part of the province, as well as parts of Quebec and the U.S. Midwest and Northeast, tinting the sky shades of gray and yellow and the Sun orange in many areas.

LA weather people have been trying to scare us shitless for a week now about the weather pattern that started yesterday. Same forecast. Nothing spectacular here, just the usual hot temperatures one would expect in July, but online all the weather sites have SCREAMING RED WARNINGS for all manner of weather that is only a bit hotter than the normal July in this vale of tears.
It gets better. At some ungodly hour this morning a 36" water main exploded right under one of the busiest intersections in West Hollywood, completely stopping traffic and flooding many streets in the area. There's a crater where Sunset used to be, and all the cars parked in the underground garages that are standard for the area are now boats.
It's impossible to get around this part of LA without going through this area. Everything is disrupted.
And they're still telling us how the weather can kill us.

El Nino again. Here, it started last Thanksgiving. I've lived in LA long enough to pick up warnings from small weather fluctuations, and I knew we were in for an "interesting" year after about five minutes of the suddenly July like weather in November. Sure enough, the highest temperature for the year is still the 98 degrees we had in February, when the rest of the country was digging snow, though we tied that yesterday. Once again everything bad starts in LA.

Monitoring two areas in the Atlantic for tropical development, including the Southeast Coast
The tropical Atlantic has been very quiet for nearly a month. There has been little to no activity since Tropical Storm Arthur formed in the Gulf in mid-June. This week, National Hurricane Center (NHC) meteorologists have flagged two tropical areas of interest, and one is very close to home.
Over the weekend, an area of low pressure may form in the northern Gulf, near the Big Bend region of Florida. The potential low is expected to track northeast across the Sunshine State and then over the warm Gulf Stream along the Southeast U.S. Coast. Beachgoers from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina may begin to experience heavy clouds, frequent rain and storms, with bigger waves at the beginning of next week.
Mexico Earthquake: Map Shows Where 7.3 Magnitude Tremor Hit Coastline
A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mexico early Friday morning, rattling the region and triggering immediate infrastructure reviews by emergency officials.

Fortunately they have learned their lesson about what happens when you ignore climate change, and this year they had "only" one or two deaths instead of last year's 100+.
Let's take a poll of the nation and see if most people still think climate change is a "liberal lie."

The climate change that doesn't exist turned out to exist after all, and so all the world's forests are under stress. Temperatures are hotter and rainfall patterns have changed dramatically. This year, the Northern Hemisphere is having a catastrophic forest fire outbreak. It affects the air in all American cities, even if you haven't noticed yet. In New York, Chicago, Boston, and DC, you have already noticed.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the fires are burning everywhere. There have been around 800 vegetation fires in Canada, and some equally disturbing number in the US. There's one every day within a 50 mile radius of LA. Really. Look it up. There are programs that run on cell phones with which you can keep track. In Los Angeles, it comes as a revelation. Now there's no surprise when air quality warnings are a daily occurrence.
Some weather software and a few web sites show the heat sources found by IR sensors on satellites. These are notorious for picking up oil refineries and landfills along with fires, but a lot of those red dots will still be fires, especially up in Canada where the population isn't as dense.
Once you've seen all the red dots and been amazed, there are a few defensive measures you can take. I've broken out the N95 masks left over from covid. They have lost their static electricity charge, so they won't work as well as they used to, but they're still considerably better than nothing. If the air in your city is red and your eyes are starting to hurt, put one on when you go out. A side benefit is that people will think you are sick, and keep their distance.
If you have an air purifier in the bedroom, use it. The best ones have HEPA filters.
Air conditioners should be on recirculate. They run up your electric bill, but it's still cheaper than hospital bills.
It's probably not the best summer for wind sprints or distance running.

Flash floods leave New York City streets underwater after torrential rain
Heavy thunderstorms triggered flash flooding in New York City on Saturday (18 July), disrupting subway lines and grounding hundreds of flights ahead of the World Cup final. Footage posted on social media by @persianpoet shows streets left underwater.
Rain washed away the toxic cloud of reddish-brown smoke that had covered everything, and no rain is forecast at game time. Yesterday's game, which had been dismissed as meaningless, was an epic offensive showdown, and one of the best soccer/football games ever played at that level.

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook the Andes region of Peru, killing at least six people, authorities said Sunday. More than 30 people were injured and 300 have been displaced.
The US Geological Survey reported the quake struck on Saturday at 9.24pm, with its epicentre located 2km (1.2 miles) west-south-west of the city of Sicaya in Huancayo province. It was 10km (6.2 miles) deep.

3 tornadoes may have touched down in N.J. during Tuesday’s severe thunderstorms, weather service says
The intense thunderstorms that were pounding parts of New Jersey Tuesday afternoon spawned two possible tornadoes in the state’s northern region and one in the southern region, according to preliminary storm reports from the National Weather Service.
The weather service’s forecast office in Mount Holly received a report from a trained weather spotter who said they witnessed a tornado on the ground near the border of Morris and Sussex counties, not far from Stanhope near Interstate 80 and Route 206 at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday.
