F1 starts March 18

Post by ZoWie »

Thank Diety as you understand same, F1 is back and promises a whacking good season even if you don't watch the hype on Netflix.

We begin, of course, the same way we ended. The first races are sportswashing efforts by sponsors in in warm-weather nasty little autocracies you wouldn't want to set foot in for any other reason. Wonderful little Bahrain first, then beautiful Saudi Arabia, which is currently boasting that it executed 81 people in one day.

Mercedes and Red Bull may even genuinely hate each other. If not, they've learned their parts well. They're guaranteed to keep things lively off the track and on. The race director who kept the world championship off the big screen and in the headlines for another reason, namely the biggest anticlimax ending in sports history, has been relieved of his command. Two other guys will alternate in the hot seat this year. I think they've also banned team managers from chatting up the race director on the administrative radio channel, which should ensure hopefully a decision making process based less on who can generate the most angst in a sport that excels in that area.

The cars are completely new, with ground effect aerodynamics instead of total reliance on downforce. One hopes for closer racing, but nothing is guaranteed. So far, mostly Mercedes has figured out a new way to cheat. They claim that their wings on the side of the car (otherwise banned) are not downforce generating elements, but merely supports to put the rear view mirrors in a position where the driver can see them. If you believe that, then the wings on a 747 are only to keep the engines away from the fuselage.

Strap in and hang on, gonna be a high-G ride for sure.

The Ferrari and Mercedes both have the oscillation problem called porpoising, which makes the car bounce around and gives the driver the wrong kind of massage. The Ferrari, however, settles down in corners, and the Mercedes doesn't.

Verstappen looks like the one to beat on this track, if his car doesn't have one of the catastrophic failures that seem to have caused problems for Red Bull this year.

And why is Russell‘s car faster than Lewis‘s in each race it seems.

Or is Lewis losing it?

How do they have a spotter around the entire track, do they use cameras for the spotters?

The company line is that Russell feels more comfortable in the car than Hamilton, who feels that this year's car doesn't fit his style well.

The less said about Ferrari at the Emilia Romagna GP, 53 miles from company HQ, a circuit named for Enzo and Dino for Chrissakes, in front of 640,000 screaming smoke-bomb-lighting tifosi in their red shirts, the better. It's embarassing enough to lose one car on the first lap when it goes off the course and breaks something, but then to call in the other driver who has a good shot at a podium place for new tires and then mess up the wheel gun so he LOSES seven places is downright depressing.

Lucky for the team mgrs that Ferrari sold to some conglomerate and Enzo is dead. There'd be bodies swinging from utility poles in Maranello.

You asked how spotters keep tabs on the whole track at once when no one can see it all.

The answer is that they can't. Half the time, no one knows what's going on. This is part of what gives F1 its charm, the announcers going oh look there's a yellow, wonder what the problem is, and we don't find out for several minutes. (This is despite the race director having a full-course radio network and real-time communication with the teams. Apparently no one ever thought to put the media into the loop.)

I completely missed the rest of Ferrari's downfall. Leclerc came in for new tires not to set fast lap, but because he'd spun off the course and done something that required fixing. Hence the slow pit stop. Even the announcers missed that part.

Everyone's gotta have a Grand Prix. Used to be that if you wanted to declare yourself open for the kleptocrats to come and party, you built an international airport and a yacht harbor. (That second one was optional if you had enough oil wells.) Now it's a GP.

Austin TX broke the mold slightly, being a state capital and actually a surprisingly nice place full of smart people. Miami will fit right in, though. It's a real city, very diverse, but it's also a resort in places. It's been hosting rogues, scalawags, and the terminally wealthy for generations.

So will Vega$, next year. Luckily there was an opening in the calendar when they had to jettison Putin's erection in Sochi after he started the first major European land war in 75 years. Putin can't sell tickets to his war, but maybe Vega$ can give its own high rollers VIP seating right above the paddock if they promise to visit the casino while they're in town.

F1's commercial rights used to be owned by one of the world's major wannabe kleptocrats, and that didn't hurt either, but he sold them and soon after he bought his wayward daughter the biggest house in LA. I don't know whether the two events are related, but they came suspiciously close together. He sold F1 (not the house) to yet another US right wing media conglomerate, Liberty Media. What could go wrong?

(Don't thank Liberty for F1's sudden US popularity... Netflix did that. I know it's hard to tell the hundreds of new greed-driven streaming-fattened money-grubbing media companies apart, but if I can do it, anyone can.)

You might think I sound cynical about the sudden F1 hosting craze. You might be right. I've watched every oil sheikhdom, high-roller principality, free trade slave farm, and wannabe international playboy resort try to get in on the action. Even the unlikely state of New Jersey tried to start one, around the same time its governor was getting in trouble for deliberately causing a traffic jam on a key bridge.

The race, like the bridge, was going to be on the Hudson, as close to the Manhattan skyline as they could get it. Great camera angles, not so great financing. No high rolling international kleptocrat blood on the hands resort wannabes, I guess. Vettel grabbed his balls in a presser on NY tri-state local Nooz, which was good for a few yucks when you saw the expression on the TV reporter's face, but then the thing vanished without a trace. Haven't heard a word since covid came.

Long Beach CA was ahead of the game. California used to be good for that, so you know how long ago we're talking about here. Talk about a wannabe resort. They had the Queen Mary, the Spruce Goose, Miss Universe, and their very own F1 Grand Prix. Everything but a habitable city. (Most of it is a hole.) I don't know what happened to the wooden airplane, but it's gone. Miss Universe's parent company sold the beauty meat parade to Donald Trump, and the rest is history. The fine burghers of Long Beach got mad at the FIA (who doesn't?) and took their ball home to Mommy, and now their car race is for Indy cars and no one hears about it.

One can only hope that's the future for all these wannabe kleptocrat butt kissers. Obscurity.

Miami's track looks challenging and actually a good place to race. It also looks like whoever is backing it spared no expense. Hopefully it'll be a good event and the best driver will win.

Drivers have complained about the Miami surface. What I noticed is that it's brown. What they noticed, having to race on it, was that it gets slippery off-line where less rubber is laid, causing frequent excursions into the fortunately heavily padded wall. As with most street circuits, said wall is never far away. Also Miami's frequent rain storms wash off the rubber.

The [sic -Z] has been significant criticism from many of the racers competing in this weekend's first F1 race at the Miami International Autodrome regarding the new circuit's low grip away from the racing line.

In the event's second practice session, Sergio Perez and Sebastian Vettel spun in separate incidents while respectively overtaking and being passed by other cars and there were three red-flag-causing crashes across the practice running and mistakes throughout the field in qualifying.

The drivers have put this down to a considerable lack of grip away from the rubbered-in racing line, which in any case will be reduced for Sunday's race after overnight rain in Miami.
BTW, the race is on ABC this week, not ESPN, unless you want to watch it in Spanish.

I pay enough to get the Dodgers. I'll pass on the 10 other subscriptions I need to get everything else. That's for rich kids, and I'm neither.

My current TV is fine in 1080i, but that whole format is about to be replaced by something more like 4K, and when you add in the switch to OLED displays, it's not a good time to invest in TVs. Monitors are another story, and my super-duper professional graphic arts monitor is looking a bit old. That'll probably be the next time I blow a chunk of money on pictures that dance on screens.

I think I saw the future of F1 in Miami. Especially telling was the fake yacht harbor with the vinyl fake water, and the wannabe nouveau-riche sitting on the propped-up boats, with the only real water appearing in the expensive cocktails.

Everybody SO wants to be Monaco.

At least Bernie Ecclestone was up front with his purpose being to attract his fellow billionaires to the sport. Liberty Media's purpose seems to be propping up the same kleptocrats while also encouraging travel and big-spending tourism in a era when people fear that it's also virus-spreading tourism. They're gonna love Vega$.

Maybe next year they'll spend less on the Florida Tourist Image and more on a decent track surface. I wouldn't count on it, though.

Will have to watch the full race, so far only watched the F1 channel on YouTube highlights. Lewis or Mercedes are so far off the mark, I do enjoy watching Leclerc and Verstappen and so on.

And the fake beaches and fake lake.... all this is a parking lot the rest of the year. Check it on Google. Everyone's gotta copy Monaco.

Vegas is gonna be grotesque... it's already Disneyland with gambling... an F1 race there is going to launch a thousand Ph.D. theses in semiology.

This writer is into some kind of coulda shoulda woulda over Ferrari's not calling in the cars for fresh soft tires. Ferrari apparently didn't have the right tires to put on the cars, having already used their supply of them. My own opinion is that they shouldn't have let their drivers get into their positions in the first place. They qualified on the front row. They didn't finish in front. The Red Bull was faster and when Verstappen has a fast car, he wins.

The Ferrari has issues on the straights. Red Bull has the best aerodynamic designers and one would expect it to have the best solution for the ground-effect oscillation problem that's causing the cars to bounce. Watch how the Ferrari drivers' necks snap back and forth. Hard to concentrate on racing when the whole world is a blur.

Russell passed Max?
Did Mercedes make progress on the porpoising?

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/wolff ... /10308412/

Mercedes endured a nightmare start to the ground-effect era with a car that suffered from wild porpoising, which forced the team to run its car higher than it wanted.

The bouncing also prevented the Brackley outfit from chasing pure performance until the issue could be resolved, as evidenced by 2022's first five races across which Lewis Hamilton and George Russell failed to make any meaningful progress.

But this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, for which Mercedes unleashed a raft of upgrades on its W13, finally appeared to have delivered the breakthrough it had been looking for.

From Friday practice onwards, the porpoising appeared all but gone and Mercedes chief Wolff confirmed that the team has its Achilles' heel problem solved.

"Yeah, we understand now," Wolff told Sky Sports after Barcelona qualifying, in which Russell ended up fourth and Hamilton sixth.
https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/hamil ... /10307635/

With the team having thrown a huge effort at a raft of changes for Barcelona, Hamilton and team-mate George Russell enjoyed a competitive showing in Friday practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Russell ended up second fastest in the more representative afternoon session, just 0.117 seconds adrift of pace-setting Charles Leclerc, while Hamilton was just one tenth further back.

But beyond the lap times, both drivers were mostly happy with how the feel of the Mercedes W13 had been transformed, and that most of the porpoising troubles that have marred its start to 2022 had been banished.

Speaking after the session, Hamilton said: “I’m positive, yeah. Super happy with the progress, so a big, big, big, big thank you to everyone back at the factory for not giving up and for continuing to push.

“We're not the quickest yet, but I think we're on our way. It's the first time we've driven down the straight without bouncing. We still have some bouncing, but it’s way better.”
Too bad Magnussen hit him. Looked like Lewis had the line. I just read Lewis said to the guys when he pitted after the tire mishap that if it were up to him he would retire and they could save the engine. I forgot about that, they only get so many engines per year, but I dont remember the details. If they can completely rebuild them, what is the point?

Ferrari is on the bubble right now. They have to solve porpoising on the straights or other teams will get one up on them the way Red Bull and Mercedes seem to be doing.

This is going to be an interesting season as technical design improvements run up against the budget cap. Lot going on in the tech side of the sport right now.

More on the development vs. budget cap issue:

https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/61551759
Formula 1 teams will be forced to miss races this season unless the sport's budget cap is increased, says Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

The current budget limit is $140m (£111m).

"Seven of the teams would probably need to miss the last four races to come within the cap this year," he said.

"It's not just about the big teams. It's teams in the middle of the field who are really struggling with inflationary issues."
Keep in mind that, given the global reach of F1 and its attendant transportation costs, plus the requirement that all cars use custom in-house designs, $140 meg is chicken feed.
