Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey says his technology firm Block is laying off almost half its workforce because artificial intelligence (AI) "fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company."
"Within the next year, I believe the majority of companies will reach the same conclusion and make similar structural changes," he wrote in a letter to shareholders.

At the end of January Amazon laid off 16,000 employees, having already cut 14,000 roles a few months earlier.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's co-founder and chief executive, said he is expecting "2026 to be the year that AI dramatically changes the way we work."

Re: AI causing massive layoffs by the oligarchy
I dont think I believe em its more like the oligarchy is using AI as cover to do things they otherwise cant get away with like donald trump uses diplomacy as a ruse to declare illegal war.
Re: AI causing massive layoffs by the oligarchy
This mess with AI is on The GOP Celebrities & people in general are getting scammed with pictures on social media including private they've never done before along getting frighting distasteful messages targeting them they don't care about regulations etc it's their own fault
Re: AI causing massive layoffs by the oligarchy
I can believe it, given that humans have already disappeared from a lot of public contact jobs. You might have noticed that you don't get humans on the phone any more. Where you used to get bad user interfaces with annoying canned female voices, now you get a machine telling you what you are thinking before you've thought it.
How long before front offices are one guy with a degree in computer science, and a room full of machines?

Automation put a lot of people out of work, and now it's starting to hurt computer programmers who thought it was the one automation-proof job. They invented AI, but now ironically enough they've caused their own jobs to be done by software. It's been said that one programmer and a computer science version of the large language model can now do the work that an entire department full of well paid humans did as recently as three years ago.

Its that our economic system serves as a war against humanity rather than being in service to humanity. It can free us up to have more time to be with the family, go fishing do art, or other things or it could just concentrate wealth and condemn us all.

Re: AI causing massive layoffs by the oligarchy
You are correct that people and machines can work together to improve conditions for everybody. Yes, after labor unions became powerful it did create an economy that Detroit was once proud of. That changed, obviously, but that's about outsourcing which is a different issue than the topic of this thread.
I'm addressing a specific problem, which is that those who are not clear on the present economic imbalance issues have been welcoming AI as the greatest invention since fire was domesticated. This might have been true in a perfect world, but we certainly don't have that. We have the most unbalanced economy since the robber baron era.
It's all in how we use it, and right now it's mostly working to throw people out of work and increase the kind of pollution that causes climate change. I sit here in 90 degree LA on the second of March when it's supposed to be late winter. We all spend hours on the phone trying to get through voice menus for things that used to take 5 minutes. We can't bear to watch the news and another damn forever war.
This sucks. Along with all our old problems, now we have new ones. From here it's clear that cybernation has been a mixed blessing at best. Nothing we can't fix, except that our priorities seem to be elsewhere.
Where ARE our priorities? Some goddamn war in the Middle East? More economic tyranny? More resources wasted on pointless military adventures in places we can't find on the map? What the hell is wrong with this country?

Re: AI causing massive layoffs by the oligarchy
isnt this the goal?...no employees to pay. all the money goes to the very pale 'owners' who are planning
the demise of "the help" no need for that we have machines that do every-thing. why do people buy
vehicles when the plan is everything will be delivered to your door.

Re: AI causing massive layoffs by the oligarchy
That has always been the goal. IBM used to have a slogan, "Machines should work. People should think." You have a lot of time to think while waiting in the unemployment line.
Motivations for buying vehicles seem to vary with the buyer. A lot of times, they don't even know why they picked a certain one. It can get downright Freudian, especially with young males.
