AI causing massive layoffs by the oligarchy

Post by ZoWie »

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cq570d12y9do
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey says his technology firm Block is laying off almost half its workforce because artificial intelligence (AI) "fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company."

"Within the next year, I believe the majority of companies will reach the same conclusion and make similar structural changes," he wrote in a letter to shareholders.

...

At the end of January Amazon laid off 16,000 employees, having already cut 14,000 roles a few months earlier.

...

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's co-founder and chief executive, said he is expecting "2026 to be the year that AI dramatically changes the way we work."

I dont think I believe em its more like the oligarchy is using AI as cover to do things they otherwise cant get away with like donald trump uses diplomacy as a ruse to declare illegal war.

I can believe it, given that humans have already disappeared from a lot of public contact jobs. You might have noticed that you don't get humans on the phone any more. Where you used to get bad user interfaces with annoying canned female voices, now you get a machine telling you what you are thinking before you've thought it.

How long before front offices are one guy with a degree in computer science, and a room full of machines?

Automation put a lot of people out of work, and now it's starting to hurt computer programmers who thought it was the one automation-proof job. They invented AI, but now ironically enough they've caused their own jobs to be done by software. It's been said that one programmer and a computer science version of the large language model can now do the work that an entire department full of well paid humans did as recently as three years ago.

Automation is fine

Its that our economic system serves as a war against humanity rather than being in service to humanity. It can free us up to have more time to be with the family, go fishing do art, or other things or it could just concentrate wealth and condemn us all.

You are correct that people and machines can work together to improve conditions for everybody. Yes, after labor unions became powerful it did create an economy that Detroit was once proud of. That changed, obviously, but that's about outsourcing which is a different issue than the topic of this thread.

I'm addressing a specific problem, which is that those who are not clear on the present economic imbalance issues have been welcoming AI as the greatest invention since fire was domesticated. This might have been true in a perfect world, but we certainly don't have that. We have the most unbalanced economy since the robber baron era.

It's all in how we use it, and right now it's mostly working to throw people out of work and increase the kind of pollution that causes climate change. I sit here in 90 degree LA on the second of March when it's supposed to be late winter. We all spend hours on the phone trying to get through voice menus for things that used to take 5 minutes. We can't bear to watch the news and another damn forever war.

This sucks. Along with all our old problems, now we have new ones. From here it's clear that cybernation has been a mixed blessing at best. Nothing we can't fix, except that our priorities seem to be elsewhere.

Where ARE our priorities? Some goddamn war in the Middle East? More economic tyranny? More resources wasted on pointless military adventures in places we can't find on the map? What the hell is wrong with this country?

money. our eco system the only one of its kind...is sucking the life the energy the motivation the intentions
of all humanity by pretending its "the best">>>> when all evidence to contrary shows its destructiveness
and the NEVER satisfied we, slaves, are stuck beneath it just sound like we're just bitching ...
ALL actual evidence to the contrare.

isnt this the goal?...no employees to pay. all the money goes to the very pale 'owners' who are planning
the demise of "the help" no need for that we have machines that do every-thing. why do people buy
vehicles when the plan is everything will be delivered to your door.

That has always been the goal. IBM used to have a slogan, "Machines should work. People should think." You have a lot of time to think while waiting in the unemployment line.

Motivations for buying vehicles seem to vary with the buyer. A lot of times, they don't even know why they picked a certain one. It can get downright Freudian, especially with young males.

And trouble

NJ school district responds after teen is arrested in child exploitation case allegedly tied to AI-generated images

A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Montgomery Township after New Jersey State Police executed a search warrant tied to a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, authorities said.

Detectives with the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit executed the warrant on March 17 at a home on Addison Avenue in Somerset County, according to state police.

Buna teen charged with creating AI-generated explicit image of classmate, says Jasper County Sheriff

BUNA, Texas — A 17-year-old Buna Independent School District student was arrested Friday in connection with the alleged creation and distribution of an AI-generated sexually explicit image of another student, according to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Chuck Havard said the investigation began April 16 after Superintendent Julie Motomura reported that an explicit image of a student was circulating on social media. Authorities said the image appeared to depict nudity and was believed to have been created using artificial intelligence.

I would imagine that AI generated porn will completely take over. We'll be awash in it, and anyone with a fast net connection will be able to make their own. I can't wait for the next generation of mystery show plots (themselves increasingly created by AI) to get to this one. They've already done chat rooms and resulting murders for the good guys to investigate.

Seven lawsuits filed against OpenAI by families of Canada mass-shooting victims

Seven families of victims killed or injured in a mass shooting in Canada have filed lawsuits against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman in a California court, accusing him and the company of ignoring the shooter's troubling interactions with ChatGPT.

Eight people were killed, including six children, when 18-year-old Jessie Van Rootselaar opened fire at a secondary school in the Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, in February.

AI fails to make inroads with cybercriminals, study finds

Cybercriminals have been struggling to adopt AI in their work, reports the first-of-its-kind study that analyzed a dataset of 100 million posts from underground cybercrime communities. The study is published on the arXiv preprint server.

In reality, most cybercriminals—often referred to as hackers—lack the skills or resources to support real innovation within their criminal activities, experts say.

Cyber criminals gave hacking a bad name. Originally, it was just geekspeak for the process of writing and debugging early programs by hand in languages like Turbo Pascal, C, and sometimes the dreaded Fortran. When a hacker went on one of the 24/7 runs typical at the time, you understood as best you could, and brought them their meals.

Somewhere around the line the term got reused for the process of exploiting other programmers' mistakes to break into secure data.

Before that, it was something of an honorable pastime, if you were into that kind of thing. You had to be wired a certain way. I was more visual than that, my thing was film making, not that different really but a lot more people-centered.

It's been causing trouble

New York official warns AI could cost city thousands of jobs

A New York City official warned this week that those working in the Big Apple could face the brunt of the negative impacts of artificial intelligence, possibly costing the city thousands of jobs.

Comptroller Mark Levine laid out scenarios the city will face tied to future impacts of AI on the economy and job market in a new report shared by his office on Thursday

I'll bet they're salivating at the very idea of filling up all but the executive suites in all those huge buildings with machines instead of people. Since that level of business is currently comprised largely of commuters and not computers, such a switch could be an economic nuclear bomb for greater NYC.

Note that the process has been going on for some years now. In Los Angeles, several of the high rise office buildings downtown have been converted into data centers. It used to be that people lived in Santa Monica and worked downtown, so the traffic would back up eastbound in the morning and westbound in the afternoon. The reverse is now the case. People work in Santa Monica but can't afford to live there. Now the traffic goes the other way.

We may have seen the future. Downtowns could become workers' ghettos with former office buildings becoming heavily guarded collections of rack servers maintained by a few ultra-skilled people and maybe some robots.

Even the Pope worries about AI

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cedppn6002jo

Pope Leo has presented the first major teaching document of his papacy, warning that artificial intelligence needs to be "disarmed".

"The word is strong, I know, but deliberately chosen because this moment needs words capable of attracting attention," the Pope said.

[...]

He suggested comparisons of failing to act against the risks of AI today with the "delay with which both society and the Church came to denounce the scourge of slavery". He even referred to the risks of "digital colonialism," linking the abuses of the colonial era to modern tech practices.

The Feds and Law Enforcement Are Worried AI Backlash Could Turn Into ‘Anti-Tech Violent Extremism’

U.S. law enforcement agencies have taken notice of the growing backlash to AI and in response are shifting their sights to what they are calling “anti-technology extremists.”

This shift is documented in over 1,000 pages of unpublished reports from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and fusion centers across the country obtained by Wired. Fusion centers are intelligence-sharing hubs where federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies work together to collect, analyze, and share information.

Given the convergence of AI and the class struggle, they have something valid to worry about.

Also they spend an awful lot of time worrying about poor people might do, and no time on what rich people might do. That causes a lot of revolutions.
