At least when they “stole” WC Field’s “voice” they had to hire an actor to do it. My best buddy from way back when had a killer Teddy Roosevelt that he did in many commercials locally over the years.Glennfs wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 9:23 am You have landed on a valid point that being AI is basically automation in the entertainment industry.
AI replaced many behind the scenes jobs like sculpture. A guy from my YFC basketball team ( the nads) earned 6 figures sculpting trees and bones along with rocks for years.
It is only now that it is reaching onscreen talent that people in that industry are speaking out.
Aa for voices WC Fields voice was pirated for years along with many others. Even names Baby Ruth was stolen.
I guess 25 to 50 years from now there won't be a need for actors or writers.

You sure do whine.
You’re incapable of such a discussion, and we all know it.

I see Joe have discussions here almost every day. It is you who can't be civil or have an honest discussion.

Bullshit. All you guys are capable of doing is repeating talking points. When I make valid points, all you can do is personally attack me. It’s funny to watch.

Glenn you ain't seen nothing yet. Progress in creative fields is rarely linear, and right now in the movies we're about to have a crisis which will profoundly change every job in the business.
There is no technical reason why right now we can't run software and have it put out a show that can run on streaming next week, with virtually no human intervention at all. No more clap slates, no more expensive cameras, no more reading agreements made by 30 craft unions, no more location shoots (maybe some image capture by contractors in the relevant countries), no more live actors except maybe once for a full-body scan, no nothing. Look at the investment commercials on CNBC, not the old skool ones but the modern ones made largely by ray tracers, and see the future.

Many industries won’t look the same. That’s true. It won’t just be creative or artistic type industries. AI will eventually take over many of the routine back office type tasks performed by humans. They aren’t to the point where you can fully “trust” AI. There are shortcomings. But over time the nature of AI is that it can “learn” so it will become better over time.ZoWie wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 9:31 am Glenn you ain't seen nothing yet. Or at least more convincing.
It can't look at a lightning bolt and get the crazy idea that it might be electricity. That kind of thing is still for people.

It's really bizarre to think about. I am sure people like Arch Obler wrote shows 70 or more years ago about this very thing.
I know Archer had one of those body scan cameras you mentioned.
I know from listening to old radio shows there are very few new ideas. But, there are some. I wonder with AI if there will ever be a new idea for a story.
Instead it will be a rehashing of the same themes over and over.
Now you have my mind racing. On TV we went from Westerns to Detective to Sitcoms to Reality. I wonder how AI will be able to read what the public wants. Or will it figure out how to manipulate the public into being told what it wants.
Then there is product placement which will enter an entire new world. It will make subliminal advertising child's play.
There is no end to the layers of this onion.

Re: California better wakeup before it's to late
AI already reads what the public wants, but it does not read what the people don't know they want yet. That takes the one crazy idea, like when George Lucas convinced Universal that the public was ready for old school SF with better (computer generated) special effects and engaging characters who joked and interacted same way we do.
We'll probably see a lot less of that, though as long as books are still written by people, that will remain a source of innovation.

That’s true. But I have been surprised at what I can do. It can be a powerful tool. The flip side is that it can also be a very effective weapon. That’s the scary part. But isn’t that true of many technologies? This technology is a little scarier because it learns and it’s hard sometimes to distinguish between what’s human and what’s AI. That and AI has no conscience.
Re: California better wakeup before it's to late
Actually when the Star Wars franchise started they still used models and motion control. That's over. Now you send the specs, a computer-generated storyboard, and maybe a few CAD/CAM drawings to contractors in India, and they send you back your FX. The only FX editor I still know went from too much work to too little, and is now looking for picture editing jobs. Those of course are changing too. The future is now.
In the last Raiders movie, they decided Harrison Ford looked too old, so they dubbed in a younger guy for the closeups. This got the actors very upset, and helped cause that last round of strikes. The strikes ended, and everyone was anticipating being able to work again, but surprise surprise, a lot of the work is gone forever. LA never really got back to where it was before the strikes.
I haven't seen the future, but I get some very unsettling premonitions every time I look at what's passing for entertainment on the great god Streaming.

Oh shit, I can barely look at the stuff on streaming. My graduate film had better FX. It all looks like someone did it at home on a PC, but it costs several magnitudes more.

it will help corps and science. it wont help human individuals.
using AI for "med care" is so dangerous.

AI will remind everyone what real art looks like. No more mass media passing for art. Real art that's worth the big bucks will be certified by 3rd parties or trade associations as being hand made by actual humans.

Re: California better wakeup before it's to late
crime has always been a staple of 'entertainment', we all grew up watching new heroes on tv
doing their job or creating the work; westerns crime killing people...we grew up on this stuff.
however it was pretty limited and we got to know our 'stars'..our hee-roes who did a movie
or had a new tv show, since tv was pretty new for many of us. for all of us.
we used to sit on the floor and stare at the monstor parked there with the screen running
some screen saver page before a show came on.
it was basically a similar world, the tv shows and how most lived. good was practiced.
todays kids...30years of them grew up on crime. grew up watching horrid awful humans do
horrid awful to other humans. now they watch it on their gamey thingy.
thats all they know. crime killing hurting loss harm bad mean tortuous shit, thats
what humans--most many old young-- now thrive on.
the young dont know the difference. they dont know life outside the gadget they stare it
while other people Do active things. all they know all they witness in front of their faces is crime.
bringing harm. the gadget shit is awful. mind numbing dumb violent shit. hour after hour.
lots of parents are starting to revolt, stop the madness, alter what their kids are doing, but its
too late now. like a brain madness seeped in and deadly crime is a to do thing. thanks tv
thanks entertainment industry thanks merica for making soooooooooooooo much dinero off
selling the children madness death and how to's.
sure there is other stuff to watch to view but the deadly crimey bullshit is Pushed on the kids.
they dont know any better now. they have no reference for when it was Not like this today shit.
no reference for guilt of crime.
then...ya got the maga-its. living out the tv shows.
the kids dont know the diff tween sane life and this cray cray today shit.
their brains are gonna rot and drip out their ears.

Actually that's a test pattern. When TVs still used vacuum tubes, it was actually used by studio engineers and TV repair people to adjust various parameters which don't matter as much now when it's all digital.
In the B/W era, it was usually the famous one with the Indian face. In color, they tended to use SMPTE bar charts.
