Zuckerberg isn’t a liberal. He’s a Peter Thiel Republican ally.

Bezos isn’t really a liberal either.

Zuckerberg is a royalist by any other name. His idea of politics, much as he's ever thought about it at all, is that the whole world belongs to those capable of becoming boss.

Bezos is a robber baron. He didn't start out as one, but he became one. If it walks like a robber baron, and talks like a robber baron, it probably is one.

Who DID start twitter? I really don't know. I was on it at the very beginning when it was a bigger more practical version of TxtMob, which IIRC was started by anarchists to raise flash mobs back when SMS was an largely undocumented feature of the cell phone system. Jack Dorsey was kind of a free spirit, probably a little too free to own a major platform, but it doesn't matter because he was out long before Musk decided to solve the problem of censoring his more vicious rants by raising $45 billion to buy the platform.

BTW, what would $45 billion do to help homelessness or save our forests? The real tragedy of capitalism is what it tends to do to priorities.

Musk doesn’t even own Twitter yet. I don’t think he’d take control until Oct and it might not even go through. Hope it doesn’t.

I think Jack Dorsey is considered right wing libertarian, but I’m not sure if that’s his label or was given to him by others. But he was been sighted with alt right groups.

Btw, Elon Musk blocks people on Twitter all the time. So while he cries about his idea of free speech on the platform, he’s a snowflake when he doesn’t like what someone has to say to him. But he’s allowed to block anyone, just as the Twitter support team is allowed to act on their TOS.

If you join Trump’s Truth Social, try insulting Trump and see what happens. Same with Lindell’s Frank or Gettr. Those are conservative platforms that have a low threshold for what they call “freedom of speech.”
Conservatives love “free speech,” what with all that book banning and don’t say gay laws.

No books have been banned. You can still purchase or get any book you want from your public library.
What has happened is parents have become more aware of school curriculum and are setting standards by which they want their children taught and their public schools to adhere to

Not true.

Parents have meddled in, oops I mean, "become more aware of," school curriculum since I was a kid and the big issue was whether to talk honestly about US foreign policy. BTW, we did. The teachers told both sides of the issues. They probably got attacked from both sides, since politics seemed more balanced then than they do now, where one side has all the money and media exposure, and it grabs all the attention.

The kind of active meddling we have now seems to come less from concerned parents and more from ambitious politicians who want to please voting blocs that are only peripherally concerned with actual education as opposed to ideology. They want to impose a particular belief system on the entire population.

Books Unbanned
https://www.bklynlibrary.org/books-unbanned

Brooklyn Public Library is adding our voice to those fighting for the rights of teens nationwide to read what they like, discover themselves, and form their own opinions. Inspired by the American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement, BPL's Books Unbanned initiative is a response to an increasingly coordinated and effective effort to remove books tackling a wide range of topics from library shelves.

The American Library Association reported 729 challenges to library, school and university materials and services in 2021, resulting in more than 1,597 individual book challenges or removals. Most targeted books were for a teen audience and were by or about Black or LGBTQIA+ persons. This represents the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling these lists 20 years ago.

Across the country, teens are facing book bans, censorship and political challenges in their local school and public libraries. Here are just some of the ways they can get support from BPL:

Good for them.

Personally, I don't think parents trying to get Toni Morrison out of their kids' libraries are showing rising "awareness"; more the opposite.

They're "aware" that their antiquated belief system is threatened by the historical truth, which they are psychologically in denial of. They wish to abolish, consciously or not, the whole concept of a free society. They have rejected any idea of taking their chances in what a more innocent age used to call the marketplace of ideas.

Due to the conservatizing appeal of cynically derived Internet propaganda from various sources, plus the deliberate destabilization operations by foreign actors who will pose as whatever side can cause the most chaos, and with all this happening on top of the ongoing distortions imposed on the public dialog by conservative billionaires in older media, they're winning.

Somehow we have to restore balance in media, and I sure don't know how we're going to do it.

Yes, they have.
You can still purchase or get any book you want from your public library.
You guys are banning books in public libraries, on top of public school libraries.
What has happened is parents
Which parents?

Transgender parents?

Same sex parents?

Liberal parents?

Not-conservative parents of color?

You don't have the personal or cultural integrety go be specific.
have become more aware of school curriculum
This is a canard.

The "school curriculum" you guys are banning is like the nonexistent shariah law you guys ran around banning in the '00s.
and are setting standards by which they want their children taught and their public schools to adhere to
Pure Heritage Foundation/Manhattan Institute propaganda.

Will you be quoting The Bell Curve, next?

You conservative whites sure as heck do not care about nonwhite not-conservative parents, nontraditional parents, or non-propagandized parents want their children taught.

Be specific when you say "parents." I do get that that's going to be hard for you, because it means you have to work through your cognitive dissonance, which in itself requires personal integrity and personal honesty.

I give examples ALL the time. You’re CONSTANTLY given links and information that you don’t read. You CONSTANTLY make statements that you just make up. You constantly lie and spread disinformation. And you constantly project. Your lies, or “opinions,” are not grounded in facts.

You lie and spread disinformation ALL the time. Lying isn’t your “opinion.” lying is lying. When it’s pointed out with data, links etc., you run away. In another thread, you just tried to claim no one here ever proves you wrong. You can’t be this delusional and separated from reality, which is why you’re a troll. That and when you start threads specifically to designed to troll, which has been pointed out often. And when you admit that you’re here to upset liberals, by using terms you’ve claimed are designed to “upset liberals,” like “Bidenflation.”

People point this out about your posts, daily.

You’ve yet to respond to the post in which I just did so, yet claim it’s the libburruls who can’t stand to be “challenged.”

Your uninformed posts are no “challenge.” You’re a Confederate States apologist who is permitted to post WS propaganda to a liberal board, hour after hour. Yet you label the people here intolerant, not understanding what a contradiction you’re living.

Glennfs is even worse than a troll.

He is a true believer in the Robber Baron/Victorian-era propaganda he spews, especially around race, anti-Black, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim resentments; and gender.

I hadn't heard about Bidenflation until Glenn brought it up. It's just not something they say much if at all around here. Biden hasn't been president long enough to have an effect. Business cycles are slower than that.

Interestingly, we never hear about Nixonflation, and his administration was the textbook case of how to guarantee stagflation. Stagflation of course is the aim of all Republican economics. It gives the rich a nice stable business environment while at the same time encouraging price gouging. Then they blame the Democrats for both, the media cooperate, and it becomes the dominant folklore. Again.

People who went to college understand about business cycles, plus the role of greed and the general downward inelasticity of markets to make prices always more prone to go up than down. That's why the prices in old ads always seem to be absurdly low.

We were due for a contraction even before drumpf, Putin, and covid guaranteed that one was at hand.

Biden announces partnership with internet providers to lower costs for low-income households

Washington (CNN) President Joe Biden on Monday announced that 20 of the nation's internet providers have committed to lowering costs for low-income households, a step the administration says will increase access to high-speed internet for 48 million households nationwide.

"Over the last few months, my administration has worked closely with internet providers. This is the case where big business stepped up -- urging them to cut their prices and raise their speeds," Biden said at a White House Rose Garden event about the effort. "So now families who are eligible can select a plan from a participating provider and receive high speed internet at no cost in most cases."

Sounds like the devil is in the details. How does a low-income household prove it? What's a household anyway? A traditional cisgender marriage with 2.5 children, submitting detailed financial statements from expensive accountants they can't afford?

Or is it just tax returns, if there are any?

Or do we need a new charity to advocate for financially strapped families to the giant octopus net monopolies?

Netflix Updates Corporate Culture Memo, Adding Anti-Censorship Section and a Vow to ‘Spend Our Members’ Money Wisely

Netflix loves to tout its culture of avoiding rules and minimizing corporate red tape. But of course, the company does have operating guidelines, famously detailed in the Netflix Culture document posted on its website. Co-founder Reed Hastings even wrote a 2020 book elaborating on the principles, titled “No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention.”

Now Netflix is publishing an update to its corporate culture memo for the first time in nearly five years, a copy of which Variety obtained exclusively ahead of its release Thursday. The last major update was in 2017, when it distilled Hastings’ original 125-slide presentation from 2009 (which has been viewed more than 21 million times).

iPod Inventor on Big Tech: "There Will Be a Reckoning at Some Point"

Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, is a household name. But there are other, lesser-known Apple pioneers. Tony Fadell, with designer Jony Ive, co-created the iPhone as well as the iPod. Fadell is now mentoring the next generation of world-changing startups. His new book "Build," described as an “advice encyclopedia,” draws on his personal experience navigating initial failures to reach monumental success. Tech is now the main stream. The main stream is polluted. Tech was supposed to solve problems, but it made them worse. This is probably a natural characteristic when change outstrips political sophistication, which it invariably does.

All these quintillions of words we've exchanged since this net became a Thing, and how much better off are we? The people who appeal to fear and ignorance still get all the attention, just like they used to, only now it happens faster and tends to facilitate retrogression for some reason, possibly because bad ideas spread better by word of mouth than realistic ones.

Tech is done changing the world. Honestly, what's left for it to ruin? The internet got everyone communicating, but mostly they communicate trivia, speculation, lies, dumb photos, boring videos, and conspiracy paranoia. Cryptocurrency and NFT were supposed to be revolutionary, taking the control away from governments and corporations, but mostly they caused waves of reckless speculation and excess energy consumption. Been there, done that, doesn't help.

I'm burned out on people spouting the Next Big Thing. It's substituting for action in the present. Been there, done, that doesn't help. Right now the future isn't what it used to be.

Disagree with many of these points about “tech” in general, but this point can’t be emphasized enough.

What the internet has become has made it much worse. I agree wholeheartedly with that.
