Israel

Post by ZoWie »

It's hard to talk about Israel because of the religious portion of its history, and its genesis from the Holocaust, but let's try to be objective for a few seconds.

Like the way we keep electing Republican hard liners when deep down a very goodly number of us know it won't help, they keep electing Netanyahu to run the place. Or, to be exact, he's always the only one who can put together a coalition with enough support to govern under its constitution. This has gone on as long as I can remember.

Netanyahu finally did a Trump. He couldn't get what he wanted the legal way, so he hatched a plan to dissolve the judicial branch. There's more to it, of course, but that's close enough for rock. (We'll leave the harmonics out of tune... the kids think it sounds cool............)

Yesterday, following a general strike that essentially shut down the whole country, he backed off, for now anyway. He kind of put it on hold.

This is Israel we are talking about. It's in a vastly more perilous situation than anything we face, surrounded by religious fanatics who want it nuked into one big crater, threatened by neo-Nazis and anti-Semites planetwide, and they know it, and still its people said ENOUGH and shut it down after its basic national assumptions came under attack.

Will Americans, with far less on the line, ever get the balls to do that?

I can remember pre-Netanyahu leaders. Some, like Ariel Sharon, were not much better.

The big problem is Israel actually doesn't have a Constitution. It has basic enabling laws, so the three branches of government have a more complicated relationship than they do here. I would argue the Likud-based "judicial reform" is about more than just Bibi keeping himself out of prison. It's really because he and his right wing allies are tired of the courts blocking the latest plan to shit on some Palestinians. He's trying to weaken the ability of the independent judiciary to restrain his government. And yes, it's downright autocratic. When your own Defense Minister starts to think so - and he was hardly a left wing peacenik - yeah, you've got a problem. The President of Israel (separate from the PM -- ceremonial and nonpartisan position) -- has also critiqued these actions.

Yeah, there has been a massive general strike. Bibi has backed off -- for now. Will they compromise with the opposition or keep going guns blazing? Guess we will find out.

No, to answer the question.

Americans will never go on a general strike, hell 40% or more of the country has NO CLUE what that term means or what happened on Jan 6, and they dont care.
I sigh in your general direction.

People would learn fast if the need presented itself. However, it won't. Right now there is no real or perceived threat big enough in the US to create what is the last resort before revolution. Americans, for the most part, are happy with their cell phones and their Internet rants, and the occasional mass murder.

Next up: algorithms as the new superstars.

Israel advances national guard force for right-wing minister
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government on Sunday gave preliminary approval for the creation of a national guard overseen by an ultranationalist Cabinet minister with a long record of anti-Arab rhetoric and stunts.

Netanyahu agreed to move ahead on the force last week after he postponed a contentious government plan to overhaul the judiciary as a way to keep National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from quitting the coalition.

Critics say the new force is effectively a personal militia for Ben-Gvir, a former far-right activist who has been convicted several times for incitement and support for a Jewish terror group......
