Tom Brady, Stephen Curry, Shaq and Naomi Osaka among celebrities sued in class-action crypto lawsuit

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and a number of other big-name sports celebrities, including Stephen Curry and Naomi Osaka, were named as defendants in a class-action crypto lawsuit filed in Florida on Tuesday.

The class-action suit was filed against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and a number of celebrities who endorsed FTX, a crypto trading company. In addition to Brady, Curry and Osaka, Shaquille O'Neal, David Ortiz, Shohei Ohtani, Trevor Lawrence and Udonis Haslem are all named as defendants. Brady's ex-wife and supermodel Gisele Bundchen, comedian Larry David and "Shark Tank" personality Kevin O'Leary are also named in the suit, as are the Golden State Warriors, a prominent partner of FTX.

The celebrities and Warriors will get cut from the suit. They know nothing about crypto. They were just suckers getting a buck for their names and images and anyone who gambled, excuse me, “invested” in crypto because of them was an idiot. I do think that celebrity endorsements for supplements or crap like crypto are wrong but it is highly unlikely any celebrity ever pays out on a suit over an endorsement. Of course, I could be wrong. A better thing would be to prevent celebrities from making endorsements for products that they know nothing about or that make claims that cannot be substantiated. The “this product is not intended to diagnose, cure or prevent any disease” spewed in advertisements for miracle cures doesn’t cut it in my book.

Celebrity endorsements should always be taken with the knowledge they are either being paid or have a stake in what they are endorsing. I agree that if they are being paid to endorse a product then they may not have much exposure for criminal/civil prosecution because they can claim they're like actors playing a role in a commercial. However, if they have a financial interest in the product their endorsing then they don't have much of an excuse for not knowing what the company's product they endorsed was doing. The courts will have to separate those responsible from everyone else.

You mean Thom Hartmann really doesn't invest in gold through that company who used to advertise on his show.
