NFL trade deadline buyers, sellers: Which teams might pull off moves in 2021?

Figuring out which NFL teams are prepared to buy or sell at the trade deadline can be a difficult enterprise – even for the front-office executives taking stock of their own franchises.

With the league's annual cutoff next Tuesday arriving before the halfway point of the regular season, it can be difficult for organizations to rule out a late surge and instead embrace a full sell-off to accumulate assets. And even for contenders, taking on a hefty contract or parting with vital draft capital can prove to be a prohibitive cost when weighing a splashy addition.

Media sports language, sheesh

When words like trade, buyers, sellers, and accumulate assets are used to describe people, the concept of say slavery and human trafficking is not left far behind.

That’s because in the past, they basically DID own the players, and traded them freely. The players had no power at all.

Thanks to unions, those days are in the past. Oh, they can make trades, but a player can tell the team that wants him “trade if you want, I won’t sign a contract with you”.

That is true for the more talented players but for the average journeyman they don't have the same options.

They have the option to go into free agency after a few years.

And wow, the game is more popular than ever. The owners kept saying that free agency would destroy the game.

NFL trade rumors tracker

Today’s a big day! That’s right, it’s Election Day in the United States, so go out and vote if you haven’t already.

But it’s also a big day because it’s time for the NFL trade deadline. Teams have until 4:00 PM Eastern to get deals done. After that, they won’t be able to make swaps until the new league year begins in March 2022. The passing of the trade deadline also means all players — including vested veterans — will be subject to waivers upon being cut.
