How Democrats can win in 2022 and beyond

Election Day was a tough night for Democrats across the country. In Virginia, we lost all statewide races and a Democratic majority in the House of Delegates. In reliably blue New Jersey, Democrats are still wiping the sweat from their brows after a tight gubernatorial election. Nonetheless, we on in a suburban and exurban seat, gerrymandered by Virginia’s No. 3 Republican, held by Republicans for two generations until we won it in 2019, and where two of our three elected county supervisors remain Republicans. Not only did we win but we expanded both our total votes and margin compared to our win in 2019 while running ahead of statewide candidates. We believe that our values-based campaign building on previous wartime military service and direct constituent outreach while celebrating progressive successes provides a blueprint for holding and potentially even expanding on Democratic-held seats in 2022 and beyond.

For the past two years, our office has focused legislatively on authoring and passing progressive legislation to fight climate change, champion voting rights, support police reform, dispense prescription drugs to those in need, and provide new employee protections. We’ve led on and supported bills that prevent gun violence, legalize marijuana, and ensure women’s access to safe and legal abortion. I was one of 13 Democrats who voted to repeal Virginia’s anti-union “Right to Work” law and part of a bipartisan group that fought monopoly utilities to drive down excessive electricity rates. We’ve done this legislative work while focusing hard on constituent outreach and service, publishing a regular newsletter describing our work with the community, attending community events, celebrating community successes and mourning community losses. Our office raised money to send letters to every household outlining key services to get through the COVID-19 crisis, and in the year that followed, worked alongside the administration of Gov. Ralph Northam to provide nearly $1.2 million in grant money to assist small businesses to get back on their feet, to rehire workers laid off, and to stay open. We helped hundreds of people deal with challenges in navigating unemployment, schools, and the DMV throughout COVID. We conducted wellness check-ins to constituents 65+ to offer resources, and to communicate up-to-date information on the pandemic.

"But He's Jewish", Opponent Questions Mandel's Faith In Ohio Senate Primary.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/1 ... del-521007.

A Republican Senate candidate in Ohio is doubling down on a controversial campaign ad, insisting voters need to be aware of an important fact: that the frontrunner in the primary is Jewish.

Mark Pukita, an IT entrepreneur in the crowded GOP race, during a Thursday night candidate forum defended a campaign ad that questioned the faith of opponent Josh Mandel.

A moderator at the debate, held by the Ohio Press Network at North Columbus Baptist Church, asked for Pukita to respond to claims that he is “antisemitic and intentionally divisive and inflammatory.”

"In terms of antisemitism, all I did in an ad was pointed out that Josh is going around saying he's got the Bible in one hand and the constitution in the other. But he's Jewish,” Pukita said. “Everybody should know that though, right?"

The Goose Stepping Republicans howl about Not Teaching CRT in "Our Schools", yet when a fellow traveler makes the personal religious practice of his opponent a campaign issue they are silent.

They are silent on Anti-Vaxers who wear the Yellow of David and compare themselves to the over 6,000,000 Men, Women and Children who murdered for being of the Jewish Faith.

Not saying anything more, I would be banned.

If Democrats return to centrism, they are doomed to lose against Trump
Biden was once touted as the ‘New FDR’. That ambition is fast dying – as are Democrats hopes of remaining in power

Only 10 months ago, Biden came into office with great expectations – but greater terrors. Even more apparent at the start than now, Biden’s presidency has been defined by fear rather than hope. With the assault on the Capitol earlier in the month, the culmination of a four-year deathwatch for American democracy, the emergency could hardly evaporate overnight. With Donald Trump temporarily ousted, his replacement also drew 1930s comparisons. The question “is he or isn’t he?” had been asked of Biden’s predecessor for four years. To redeem the country from the fascist, was Biden going to be Franklin Roosevelt?

Like FDR, Biden led Democrats who have rightly stressed economic transformation for the sake of the poor and vulnerable but also for the angry and disaffected voters of the stagnating middle. But unlike Roosevelt, Biden’s coalition is fragile and fissures emerged to threaten his success almost from the start – fissures that broke it apart definitively last week even in the midst of Biden’s infrastructure victory.

Other causes were forced to the margins along the way. Biden subordinated even critical fixes to American democracy, like reforms of courts and elections, to the economic agenda. As for his immigration policies, which mostly resembled the disgusting ones of prior presidents, they were treated with a partisan silence, provoking rage among the few principled enough to demand fewer cruelties and restrictions no matter who is imposing them. But Biden got a pass because enough agreed with the priority to address the economic reasons for Trump’s breakthrough, which are undeniable.

Yet in comparison to Roosevelt’s first “100 days” – which saw 15 major bills and gave the early phase of every presidency its name – Biden’s first 100 days were bogged down. A Covid-19 relief and stimulus bill was passed, adding $1.9tn in emergency spending to the $2.2tn of the first such bill signed by Trump in March 2020. But the real hopes fell on the big-ticket measures for “infrastructure” and welfare that Biden resolved to pursue separately. After all, the American Rescue Plan was only meant to be a temporary stopgap for an American society beset with deeper ills even beyond those that the virus laid bare.

The game was on. At first the debate seemed to be about how costly to make the bills and how to fund them. This was especially true for the American Families Plan, which was supposed to take steps towards an American welfare state – including by making relief measures for children in earlier bills permanent. Progressives in Congress, understanding the risks, were lauded for an early victory in August, refusing to back the first narrower infrastructure bill if Democrats abandoned the second more ambitious social spending bill. Centrists tried to tag progressives as the obstructionists. But the mainstream narrative remained that by holding infrastructure hostage, progressives were wisely keeping centrists from returning to form.

Even as it became clearer and clearer that the Democratic centrist senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, and like-minded Democratic colleagues in the House of Representatives, were doing damage to the ambition of the bills, a breakthrough after generations of Democratic austerity and neoliberalism still seemed possible. Then came the critical event that allowed for the centrist breakthrough last week: the election for Virginia governor last Tuesday.
there's a reason why the cheer leading for biden has to be so intense
....An infrastructure bill for a country in decay and decline was much needed and has itself eluded Democrats for decades. Though cut in half to win acceptance, its $1tn for a grab bag of spending – much focused on transport – is nothing to trivialize. But rarely in history has a greater looming defeat been snatched from the jaws of a political victory as the other day.

In the first year of Biden’s presidency, Democrats agreed that the only alternative to barbarism is, if not socialism, some modicum of economic change. Many agreed that opening acts of Barack Obama’s administration had been fatefully insufficient. Now, despite the lessons of the Obama presidency, Republicans are set to recapture one house of Congress after two years – or both. By contrast, FDR gained seats in both houses after delivering substantive change, and won the presidency three more times.....
Because it has to make up for overcompensate for the lack of real progress in the most needed areas. The country is in dire need of change and economic justice and it just cant be faked or mitigated by misinformation or lack of attention.

I think it's worth pointing out that Obama was DLC, Biden is original DLC. Obama, and now Biden 30 years later, are barely to the left of Bill Clinton, who was a center-right Dem on the heels of Reagan/Bush, who were far right. I mean, I guess they weren't overtly fascist. The DLC was formed to counter the excesses of Reagan/Bush by incorporating their repressive social and economic ideologies.

I like Biden, I like this administration's policies, for the most part. But Obama/Biden are the centrism. You can tell by the trashy immigration policies of both, but I digress.

The Republican Party and its minions advocate for destroying the environment for munny, economic disparity as public policy, flagrant authoritarianism, violent white nationalism, and are pro-sexual assault. At this point, the so-called center is Reaganism. And yeah, I do agree if the Dem party goes back down the Blue Dog rabbithole, they are definitely doomed to lose against the literal fascism that is trying to stare down this country.

Some good news is that the Sinemas and Manchins are just going to get sucked up by the rightwing nutjob lobbyist conveyor belt they're on, anyway, so we won't have to be bothered with them after very long.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, the president pro tempore of the Senate and longest-serving member in the chamber, won't seek reelection next year, concluding his final term in the Senate after nearly five decades.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/1 ... ire-522356.

Leahy, 81, announced Monday that he would not run for a ninth term at the state capitol in Montpelier, the same location where he announced his first Senate run at age 33. First elected in the post-Watergate midterms in 1974 after serving as Chittenden County state‘s attorney, Leahy's tenure spanned eight presidents and leaves him as, for now, the only Democrat ever elected to the Senate from Vermont.

Wyoming Republican Has Kicked Liz Cheney To The Curb.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/wyoming- ... 197af5b50d.

The Wyoming Republican Party voted to no longer recognize Rep. Liz Cheney as a member of the GOP this weekend, a symbolic move that reflects ongoing frustration among conservatives who are still firmly allied with former President Donald Trump.

The party passed the measure by a 31-29 vote on Saturday, the Casper Star Tribune reported. The move comes after about a third of Wyoming counties voted earlier this year to no longer recognize Cheney as a Republican. The state’s GOP also voted in February to censure her over a vote to impeach Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

To further her own personal political agenda, Representative Liz Cheney has not only caused massive disruption, distraction and division within the House Republican Conference, but has also willingly, happily, and energetically joined forces with and proudly pledged allegiance to democrat Speaker of the House Pelosi,” the resolution reads. The measure adds that Cheney did so “as a means of serving her own personal interests while ignoring the interests, needs and expectations of Wyoming Republicans.”

Congresswoman Jackie Speier Retiring At End of Term.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/1 ... ess-522690.

Rep. Jackie Speier on Tuesday announced she would not seek reelection to Congress next year, becoming the latest House Democrat to opt against running for another term.

"It's time for me to come home — time for me to be more than a weekend wife, mother and friend," Speier (D-Calif.) said in a video statement. "It's been an extraordinary privilege and honor to represent the people of San Mateo County and San Francisco at almost every level of government for nearly four decades."

An ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Speier ascended to Congress in 2008, replacing late Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), who died in office earlier that year.

Prior to joining the House, Speier was a longtime member of California's state legislature and a congressional aide. In 1978, when working as a staff assistant for then-Rep. Leo Ryan (D-Calif.), Speier was part of the U.S. investigative delegation that visited the Jonestown cult community in Guyana.

Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont Will Retire At End of Current Term.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states ... in-vermont.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont said Monday he won’t seek reelection next year to the seat he’s held since 1975, signaling an end to a career that’s included major roles on issues such as civil liberties and financing the government and that began before four of his current colleagues were born.

It’s time to come home,” said Leahy, 81. He made the announcement in the Vermont State House, blocks from where he grew up.

The decision by Leahy, among the Senate’s more liberal members, marks the end of a political era. He’s the last of the so-called Watergate babies, the surge of congressional Democrats elected in 1974 after President Richard Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment.

No it means your side makes up shit - like we're too far to the left. CRT is made-up bullshit, when the right realized after the George Floyd murder that the American people were sympathetic to the plight of black people murdered by cops, so they made all this shit up about CRT. And idiots like you buy it.

It's all about hating black people. You can scare people that blacks are violent by nature and must be controlled.

The Virginia election was all about race for the GOP. Scaring white people about blacks and what they'll do.
