Inside the Conservative Campaign to Relax Child Labor Laws
In an extraordinary development for labor law in the United States, the Foundation for Government Accountability -- a Florida-based conservative think tank -- has been convincing Republicans to allow kids as young as 14 to work longer hours in arguably more dangerous conditions.
A number of U.S. states, including Iowa and Arkansas, are getting on board. In a recent article, Washington Post reporter Jacob Bogage explains how campaigners are cloaking these rollbacks under cover of "parental rights." Bogage joins Hari Sreenivasan to discuss why conservatives appear willing to put children at risk.
Private payrolls surged by 296,000 in April, much higher than expected, ADP says
Hiring at private companies unexpectedly swelled in April, countering expectations for a cooling job market ahead, payroll processing firm ADP reported Wednesday.
Private payrolls rose by 296,000 for the month, above the downwardly revised 142,000 the previous month and well ahead of the Dow Jones estimate for 133,000. The gain was the highest monthly increase since July 2022.

The Pentagon on Tuesday announced a $1.2 billion military aid package for Ukraine that includes orders to contractors for “critical near-term capabilities,” including air defense systems and 155mm artillery rounds. The assistance initiative will fund HAWK air-defense systems, air-defense munitions and drones for air defense. It will also buy artillery, rockets, satellite imagery assistance and funding for ongoing maintenance and spare parts for a variety of systems.
Last week, the Pentagon sent Ukraine $300 million in ammunition and other equipment from existing stocks. The shipments come as Ukraine prepares to launch a long-planned offensive. Ukraine also needs air-defense systems to shoot down waves of Russian missiles and drones......
Banks made obtaining a loan tougher for consumers and businesses in recent months amid the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and two other institutions, heralding a dimmer outlook for the U.S. economy, according to a Federal Reserve survey.
Forty-two percent of banks said they somewhat tightened lending standards for large and midsize companies over the past three months, according to the Fed’s Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey. And 45% said they somewhat toughened lending criteria for small firms.
A similar percentage of banks already was making borrowing more challenging for consumers and businesses in the prior three-month period because of an increasingly uncertain economy and the Fed’s aggressive interest rate hikes......
....Last week, the Fed hiked its key interest rate by a quarter percentage point to a range of 5% to 5.25%, capping its biggest flurry of rate increases in 40 years to tame a historic inflation surge.....

Hey let's build a statue and throw a parade inflation is now "only" 5pct.
Thanks to the federal reserve raising interest rates.
Everything good is the fault of the GOP. Everything bad is the fault of the Dems.
You're such a partisan. We all know you'd rather have the Donald in charge.

That dude is one of the biggest hyper partisan clowns I’ve ever seen on message board. He just can’t handle reality.
ALL economic numbers prove the economy does far better under dems, undeniable fact.
Republicans applauded when Trump said they should let the country go into default, even though it would send America and the world spiraling into an economic catastrophe.
Republicans want America to fail, for power.

A 25-year-old hospital worker at a Richmond, Virginia, medical center was fatally shot by another hospital staffer early Wednesday morning, hospital officials and police said.
Police said there had been an altercation between twoco-workers in a stairwell at Virginia Commonwealth University's medical center that resulted in one man shooting the other.
The shooter, 24-year-old Christopher Boisseau, of Henrico, was taken into custody early Wednesday morning, VCU police said.
"This was a terrible incident that has shaken us all," VCU Health's CEO Marlon Levy said in a message to the community.
Both men worked at the hospital and were "known to each other," according to an email from the VCU medical center president and the VCU police chief.....

A Pennsylvania battery maker was ordered to pay $22 million in back wages to 7,500 workers after the Department of Labor (DOL) ruled they were denied overtime.
The DOL said East Penn Manufacturing Company Inc. didn't pay employees for their time spent preparing to work in hazardous conditions.
The department said the verdict, reached by a jury, was the largest recorded amount it had obtained under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
During its investigation, the DOL found that East Penn employees were only being paid for their contracted 8-hour shifts. But this excluded the extra time that employees were required to put on and remove protective equipment and shower, mainly to avoid lead exposure.
She added: "Federal law requires employers to pay workers for the hours they work, including time these workers needed to protect themselves from dangerous workplace hazards." https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/compani ... 67d2&ei=21
This is a great decision and one employers need to pay heed to. If an employer is requiring their employees to do something before they begin work then they need to pay them for the time they're doing that something. In this case, putting on or removing protective equipment is something that is done in direct connection with their work and they should be paid for that time.

US weekly jobless claims fall; labor market defying recession fears
WASHINGTON, May 18 (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, with applications in Massachusetts decreasing sharply, suggesting the labor market remains tight.
The steep decline in weekly jobless claims reported by the Labor Department on Thursday reversed the surge in the prior week, which had boosted them to the highest level since Oct. 30, 2021. That increase was largely blamed on an unusual jump in applications for unemployment insurance in Massachusetts.
At 8:30 Pacific time this morning, it was announced by the Nooz that debt ceiling negotiations had stopped, and the markets promptly collapsed. We all know why a procedural formality has become a war every some number of years, and it's completely due to partisan shenanigans.
I thought Republicans liked it when their investments gained value. It seems obvious that I was wrong.
If your portfolio is looking a bit weak or your job is on the line, blame the usual whack jobs who Republicans like to elect to Congress.

I support the call for Biden to invoke the 14th Amendment. The Congress passed the spending bills and they need to ensure the U.S. can pay the bills they passed.
You want to know why the talks stopped? This is why. This treasonous rapist owns this party and calls the shots. When this message went out, talks stopped. He also said this at his bogus tow hall on CNN. He wants the economy to crash because he thinks it’s his chance to regain power. The GOP are terrorists

You know many democrats have the same opinion. Thanks to the internet nobody can blink and both sides can't work for a compromise.
Because if they do they will be labeled a rino or a dino.

I agree and think it will be a good thing regardless of how the courts rule on it.
I heard on LW radio today thev14th amendment is why the Republicans are taking such a hard stand.
Personally I believe it is also why democrats are taking such a hard stance.
Both sides believing that invoking the 14th will help them on election day.
Personally and partly for selfish reasons I hope it is invoked and the court rules it is constitutional.

Not a talking point. You guys can’t have a good economy or you’ll lose next year. And it’s more important for you to win than it is for our country to be strong and prosperous.
