Labor/Economics
Re: Labor/Economics
The free market always kind of reminded me of the perfect vacuum. Both require so much work to maintain that they essentially cannot exist for long. Neither one reflects the conditions that actual humans actually live in.
If the free market did exist, its behavior would be unpredictable, governed mostly by probability, social entropy, and chaos math, and it would self-destruct.
Ronzo said he wanted a free market, but by cutting taxes on the rich and throwing disadvantaged and mentally ill people out onto the streets, he guaranteed there would never be one. Of course, even if he had done neither, there would not be one.
The closest to utopia that this country ever got was right after WWII. You know, all that stuff about the boss and the workers living in the same neighborhoods. It ignored that the owners still lived in secluded walled compounds or private islands, but otherwise now it's regarded as a golden age.
Now, we have a UK prime minister who lasted a month in office after her first official act when the country finished burying Her Majesty Defender of the Faith was to do a cornerstone of conservative economics, proposing a Reagan style budget where the rich got richer and everyone else waited six months for a doctor's appointment.
This time, though, it caused the government to melt down. Thatcherism/ Reaganism is just SO twentieth century. There must be something more relevant.
Where do we go from this? It's a fine mess.

Re: Labor/Economics
Many countries on that list have far right wing conservative governments.
The economy is global. The entire world is undergoing inflation and the reasons have been explained. One of the primary reasons being corporate price gouging where corporations are making massive profits at everyone else's expense. And guess what? Most of these companies are run by conservatives. The US actually has one of the lower numbers. Stop being stupid and playing stupid childish political games.

And that said, the GOP has not proposed ONE SINGLE solution to help fight inflation. Not one. But they've certainly voted against policies to help curb it.
The government is suppose to work together to solve problems. The Republican party just wants power. They have NOTHING.

U.S. GDP accelerated at 2.6% pace in Q3, better than expected as growth turns positive
The U.S. economy posted its first period of positive growth for 2022 in the third quarter, at least temporarily easing inflation fears, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Thursday.
GDP, a sum of all the goods and services produced from July through September, increased at a 2.6% annualized pace for the period, according to the advance estimate. That was above against the Dow Jones forecast for 2.3%.

Putting inflation aside, the economic success is astounding. Inflation is better here than most places and what can be done is being done. Too bad HALF of the increase in prices is now proven to be corp greed.

Hobby Lobby founder says he’s giving away his company because 'wealth is a curse’
Hobby Lobby founder David Green announced through an Oct. 21 op-ed at Fox News that he's giving up his company, and that he "chose God" over wealth.
Green credited his faith and higher power as the "true source" of his success, noting that "God was the true owner of my business," and felt that passing the company down to his children and grandchildren would've been the wrong move.
"As an owner, there are certain rights and responsibilities, including the right to sell the company and keep the profits for yourself and your family," Green wrote. "As our company grew, that idea began to bother me more and more. Well-meaning attorneys and accountants advised me to simply pass ownership down to my children and grandchildren. It didn’t seem fair to me that I might change or even ruin the future of grandchildren who had not even been born yet.
“When I realized that I was just a steward, it was easy to give away my ownership," added, Green, whose net worth is $14 billion according to Forbes.....

Family mourns young mother killed after forklift she was driving fell on her
Dayzia Kelly was just 25 years old when the forklift she was driving early Monday fell on top of her.
Her family says she took the job at Metalsa, between 17 Mile and 18 Mile roads near Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights, to make money before going back to nursing school.
Kelly’s aunt Chevon Starnes describes her niece as funny, loud, and someone who was always willing to help someone else. Starnes can’t help but smile and laugh as she reflects on the memories the two shared.....
The state is covering some of the funeral costs, but Kelly’s family is paying for the rest. If you want to donate money to help with Kelly’s funeral and support her two children, click here.

https://twitter.com/RevDrBarber/status/ ... 9454850051We understand that if retrogressive legislation and a refusal to act can rob the poor, then legislation can also correct the robbery and restore the real purpose and possibility of society.
Democracy cannot flourish amid fear. Liberty cannot bloom amid hate. Justice cannot take root amid rage.
We must get to work!
We must organize a movement against the injustice & the structures through which the society is refusing to lift the load of oppression and poverty.

Colluding to Cripple the National Negro Labor Council - African American Intellectual History Society (AAIHS)
img]https://cdn.aaihs.org/wp-content/upload ... scaled.jpg[/img]
img]https://cdn.aaihs.org/wp-content/upload ... scaled.jpg[/img]
Much more in link.In late October 1951, one of the most important African American trade union initiatives in U.S. history was launched.
“The Freedom Train, jam-packed with fifteen hundred fighters,” rolled into Cincinnati on October 27, reported Viola Harrison in Freedom newspaper. She noted that “Negro working-class leaders and rank and file workers… took their battle posts and girded for action” in a nationwide fight for economic, political, and social equality. Together, they founded the National Negro Labor Council (NNLC).
The NNLC was born out of a Chicago National Trade Union Conference for Negro Rights held in June 1950. Over 1,000 African American leaders pledged to build a network of “Negro Labor Councils.” The NNLC’s goal was to establish a “permanent national organization” designed to mobilize the “strength of Negro workers.” Paul Robeson gave the main plenary speech, while National Negro Congress, Negro Labor Victory Committee, and recently expelled Communist-led Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) union activists discussed Jim Crow, discriminatory employment practices, colonialism, and the Korean war.
Among the NNLC’s leaders were William Hood, secretary of the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 600, which was, at 20,000 members, the largest UAW local; Cleveland Robinson, vice president of the Distributive, Processing and Office Workers Union; and Coleman Young, leader of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers and future Mayor of Detroit. While the NNLC was not free of the sexism then permeating the labor movement, Black women such as Vicki Garvin held numerous leadership positions and received “emphatic applause” at the Convention when they asserted their importance to the labor movement.
Hood put to rest any notion that the NNLC would be subordinate to white labor. “[T]he day has ended when white trade union leaders or white leaders in any organization may presume to tell Negroes on what basis they shall come together to fight for their rights,” he said.1
Within a year of the Chicago Conference, 23 “Negro Labor Councils in major industrial centers throughout the country” were established. These new Black labor councils operated within the predominantly white – and perhaps, reactionary – American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the increasingly conservative CIO. However, the NNLC was independent of both. It pledged to “pay particular attention to the problems of Negro sharecroppers as well as industrial workers,” two groups largely ignored by the AFL. And with the purge of Communists from the CIO, Black workers were also increasingly marginalized within that organization.
Unlike the AFL and CIO, the NNLC promised to build an organization that “will be content with nothing less than full freedom for the Negro people and an end to the era of second-class citizenship.” Due to its outspoken anti-racism, as well as its alliance with Communists, the NNLC drew attention from conservatives seeking to eliminate “subversive elements” in society.

Strike by 48,000 University of California academic workers causes systemwide disruptions - LA Times
UC could have avoided this, but like all strike situations, brought it on themselves.
More power to them!
UC could have avoided this, but like all strike situations, brought it on themselves.
In the Bay Area, i.e. UC Berkeley, Livermore Labs, and UC Hastings, $54K if it's just and you you have a kid/kids is not even close to a living wage.About 48,000 unionized academic workers across the University of California’s 10 campuses — who perform the majority of teaching and research at the state’s premier higher education system — walked off the job Monday morning, calling for better pay and benefits.
The systemwide strike includes teaching assistants, postdoctoral scholars, graduate student researchers, tutors and fellows, as well as workers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and it has already caused multiple disruptions to scheduled classes, just weeks before final exams.
The strike marks the largest work stoppage of the year so far, and union leaders say it will also be the biggest at any academic institution in history. UCLA workers joined the picket line at 8 a.m., demonstrating with signs, T-shirts and chants at multiple locations across campus, as did groups at UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced.
The 48,000 workers, represented by four UAW bargaining units, have demanded base salaries of $54,000, a wage increase that would more than double their average current pay of about $24,000 annually.
UC has offered a salary scale increase of 7% in the first year and 3% in each subsequent year, but workers have said that’s not sufficient.
More power to them!

Essential Farm Workers Travel to D.C. Before Thanksgiving to Push Compromise Agriculture Bil - UFW
The United Farm Workers (UFW), the UFW Foundation, Pineros Campesinos Union del Norte (PCUN), and La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) announce that more than 60 of their farm worker members will travel to Washington D.C. the week before Thanksgiving to push Congress to pass the bipartisan Farm Workforce Modernization Act, compromise legislation which will honor farm workers’ labor and help secure America’s food supply.
Farm workers from major agricultural states will be a part of the delegation including workers from Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Georgia, Michigan, Idaho, Colorado, Texas, and Virginia. The Farm Workforce Modernization Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives in March of 2021 with 247 votes and with 30 GOP votes.
“Providing America’s agricultural workforce with the legal status and stability they have earned is a crucial factor in ensuring America’s food security,” said UFW President Teresa Romero. “On Thanksgiving, when Americans gather with family to give thanks for the food on their table, we ask Congress to show its thanks to essential farm workers and their families by passing this common sense bipartisan legislation.”
“This Thanksgiving, families all over the country will enjoy the food brought to their tables by farm workers,” said UFW Foundation Chief Executive Officer Diana Tellefson Torres. “Farm workers demonstrated during the pandemic that they are at the very core of our food security. These hardworking men and women have earned the opportunity to apply for legal status. Let’s give thanks to those who nourish this nation by passing the Farm Workforce Modernization Act through Congress.”
