Happy Hanukah People

Post by ProfX »

As always, let's let Adam Sandler kick it off.

Is embedded video working?

OK. Looks like no, I'll just post the link.

Bohemian Chanukah

The Holidays are Only Holy If We Make Them So
....The meaning of the holidays is that they correct our problems at their roots. If you view Hannukah and Christmas only in terms of outer realities - from candles and fairy lights, to presents we have to buy, to who goes where and eats dinner with whom - then that is what they will mean to us. And in that case, we’re lucky if we can stave off the stress and anxiety that accompany such externalities. The internals of the holidays are sacred, but the externals are anything but.

If you choose to go deeper - to eschew the materialistic maya that does more to obscure than to reveal the spiritual truths of the holiday season - then doors open that really do change the world. They change the world because they change us. By reminding us that miracles are possible, and that something miraculous exists within us, they change our attitudes, our energy, our sense of possibility, and our faith in ourselves. They represent a complete transformation of who we think we are, and of our relationship to the world.

The portal from a world of darkness to a world of light does not exist in the material world but in our psyches. The salvation of the world will not derive from accumulated data but from expanded hearts. Something is going to change inside us, and that will change the world......

Bless Marianne. We all should have expanded hearts, I'm glad she's telling people the holidays should be about more than buying lots of useless crap your friends and families don't need, to put yourself in serious debt.

I still think your heart should be huge, even the Grinch's could grow, but it's accumulated data that help us find drugs that will treat COVID. We need both. Minds and hearts. Loving compassion is marvelous, but without climate data from satellites and other observations, we most definitely cannot save ourselves from climate change.

yea I took it and this is just my opinion though but I took it that she wasnt putting data down but just saying that by itself it isnt sufficient, that it takes the heart to move us to use the data in a way that brings us from darkness to light. If data were all that was needed the mass shootings would be over and everyone would be vaccinated. I take it she means not superficial or sentimental heart expansion but that is rooted in love because what is in the heart comes out in words and actions so its the way that the data is centered and where it is directed from that will have the biggest effect moving from dark to light.

Happy Hanukah!!!!
Love of Country is not Blind Patriotism. It is not devotion to one person or one party. It is knowing fighting for your country is single most important thing you can do. Do not accept the notion violence is the answer.

So, one of the ironic things I think about this holiday is ... the Maccabees are the heroes of the story. So why is the Book of Maccabees never found in a Jewish bible (only in the Apocrypha of a Catholic Vulgate?)

Truth is, it's a fairly minor Jewish holiday; Jews in America pumped it up a bit to "compete" with Xmas, this stuff of giving 8 gifts (they are supposed to be minor, not like you get 8 laptops), it all started because of this.

Have I mentioned sufganiyot yet? People know about latkes, but they don't know about Jewish donuts, and they should. :D

It's ironic, but the Maccabees after liberating the Judean people from Antiochus, then came to become a dynasty of rulers over Judea who were both illegitimate and did some really nasty stuff (see: John Hyrcanus) that eventually led to the Roman Empire taking over the country (essentially, the Hasmoneans were caught in a bloody intra-dynastic civil war, they invited Rome to come in and settle the dispute, they did ... by taking over.)

Yep, I like history. :D

I honestly doubt a candelabra's oil in the Temple miraculously lasted 8 days long, rather than just 1, but eh, it's a nice myth.

And I also think coexistence is key to a human future.

For words that are hard for me to spell because I use it so rarely, once I find the correct spelling I just cut-n-paste it. Saves a lot of time and effort.

There is no "correct' way to spell it in English.

Transliteration is a thing. Was the city in China Peking or Beijing? Was Moammar Qhadafi ... well how exactly did you spell his last name? Newspapers used six different ways. When you translate from one language to another like Arabic or Mandarin ... same with Hebrew.

The starting phoneme for the word can't be written in English lettering per se, as it's a phoneme that doesn't exist in English. :D

I can say if you pronounce it "Chanukah" like "Channing Tatum" you're saying it wrong. :D
