Twitter will now let private individuals request takedowns of pictures or videos featuring them. The company announced the change this morning, extending an existing ban on private information to cover media. It’s aimed at preventing harassment or invasions of privacy and includes exceptions for posts that are “shared in the public interest or add value to public discourse.”

“Sharing personal media, such as images or videos, can potentially violate a person’s privacy, and may lead to emotional or physical harm,” reads a Twitter Safety blog post announcing the change. “The misuse of private media can affect everyone, but can have a disproportionate effect on women, activists, dissidents, and members of minority communities.” Twitter will evaluate complaints by the subject of a picture or video — or someone representing them — according to its larger private information policy.

https://www.theverge.com/2021/11/30/228 ... harassment
It's the right idea, but their poorly worded statement confused a lot of people and led to a lot of complaints about its ambiguity. It's a legal precedent that if someone in a crowd shot or a photo background is in a public place, they implicitly waive their common and civil law rights regarding use of their image. Twitter had hundreds of people getting angry because they thought that only photo subjects with immediate breaking news value or signed model releases could appear on Twitter. This, of course, would pretty much eliminate most of the photos that currently run on the platform, but it was clear from subsequent clarifications that it was never the intent.

In other words, common sense prevailed, maybe, but it should never have been that vague. They need to come out with more precise language. They are getting a new CEO, and he inherits a huge problem.

NC Supreme Court’s No. 2 Justice Won’t Seek Reelection

North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Robin Hudson announced on Wednesday that she won’t seek reelection next year, citing mandatory age limits that would significantly curtail her service if she won.

State law requires North Carolina judges and justices to retire at the end of the month in which they turn 72. Hudson turns 70 in February. Supreme Court terms last eight years.

Thank you for your Congressional Service Peter & best wishes to you & your family.

Peter DeFazio will retire from Congress in latest blow to Democrats

Rep. Peter DeFazio, the Oregon firebrand who leads the House's transportation committee, will step down after 36 years in Congress, spelling more bad news for Democrats in 2022 and taking with him an encyclopedic amount of institutional and technical knowledge on infrastructure.

DeFazio told POLITICO that he was retiring to “focus on my health and well-being,” but his announcement comes on the heels of a frustrating few years in which DeFazio’s dreams of an ambitious, environmentally focused overhaul of the nation’s highway and transit program were sidelined for a major infrastructure bill that went only as far as Republicans in the Senate would agree to go.

Jury finds Rio Arriba County sheriff guilty of two felonies

After a few hours of deliberation, a jury in Santa Fe found Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan guilty of helping former Española City Councilor Phillip Chacon evade police following a high-speed chase in March 2017.

The verdict, which puts Lujan’s future as sheriff in question, came after a three-day retrial of the case. A state district judge in June declared a mistrial in the first case following a hung jury — deadlocked at 8-4 in favor of acquittal — at the Rio Arriba County Courthouse in Tierra Amarilla.

Women's tennis suspends all tournaments in China over concern for Peng Shuai

Hong Kong (CNN) The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has announced an immediate suspension of all tournaments in China, including Hong Kong, in response to Beijing's silencing of sexual assault allegations made by Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai against a former top Communist Party official.

In a statement released Wednesday, WTA chairman and CEO Steve Simon said the decision was based on the "unacceptable" response of Chinese officials in the #MeToo scandal, including rushing to censor Peng's allegations and ignoring calls for a full and transparent investigation.

Google workers in U.S. won’t return to office as expected on Jan. 10

Google will not be requiring its employees to return to offices on Jan. 10 as expected after all, according to an email sent to employees Thursday and seen by CNBC.

The company’s security VP, Chris Rackow, wrote in the email to full-time employees that it will wait until the new year to assess when U.S. offices can safely return to a “stable, long-term working environment.” None of the U.S. locations will adopt the hybrid working mandate on Jan. 10 as planned, his email said.

Hulu Pulls Astroworld Documentary From Streaming Service Following Backlash

Hulu has pulled a documentary about the Astroworld tragedy hours after it appeared on the streaming service, quickly sparking a backlash over the timing of the special.

On Wednesday, Dec. 1, Astroworld: Concert From Hell was uploaded onto Hulu with little fanfare or promotion; soon after, word of the insensitively titled documentary — which, on the surface, appeared to look like new and original programming — spread on social media.

New York (CNN) CNN said Saturday that anchor Chris Cuomo has been "terminated" by the network, "effective immediately."

The announcement came after an outside law firm was retained to review information about exactly how Cuomo aided his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, when the then-governor was accused of sexual harassment.

Remember Sean Spicer, Trump's former press secretary? Trump appointed him to the board of the U.S. Naval Academy for a three-year term and Biden fired him. Spicer sued Biden saying he could fire him and that he should be able to complete his three-year term. A judge has ruled against him saying Biden has the authority to fire him.
A federal judge blocked former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer and ex-Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought from returning to the board of the U.S. Naval Academy while they sue President Joe Biden over their ouster from the panel.

Friedrich, a Trump appointee, rejected the claim that Biden’s removal of Spicer and Vought would “silence dissenting views” on the board, which advises the president on the “state of morale and discipline” at the Naval Academy, as well as its curriculum, physical equipment and fiscal affairs, according to an order filed on Saturday.

In their complaint, Spicer and Vought argued Biden did not have the legal authority to remove them from the board, citing a provision for three-year terms set by Congress. The judge rejected that view.

“Such term-of-office provisions do not constrain the president’s removal power,” the judge wrote. “To the contrary, they serve only to limit the length of an officeholder’s term.”

Lawmakers drop proposal to add women to the draft as defense bill headaches mount

Compromise defense policy legislation set to be filed Monday will not require women to register for a military draft, according to two people with knowledge of the negotiations, a stunning turnaround after the proposal gained bipartisan support in both the House and Senate this year.

Leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services committees left the provision out of the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act, despite the fact that both chambers' bills would have expanded the Selective Service System beyond men.

Justice Department closes investigation into Emmett Till killing after failing to prove key witness lied

(CNN) The Justice Department has officially closed its investigation into the infamous killing of Emmett Till without federal charges for a second time, leaving only more questions after a potentially significant claim from one of the last living witnesses led investigators on a fresh hunt for evidence.

In 2017, professor Timothy Tyson unearthed what appeared to be a key piece of evidence in one of the most haunting and grisly murders documented in the Jim Crow Era: a recantation from the woman at the center of the case who had accused Till of making sexual advances at her over 60 years ago.

Carolyn Bryant Donham is an ur-Karen.

She lied, admitted she lied, to a historian; and like a typical depraved white conservative, really is just too amoral to care.

Cue now the conservative whites around here, who will now come whitesplain that we should be grateful for this vicious lynching, since it set off the entire Civil Rights movement as most people understand it. :problem:

Labette County Commissioner Kinzie Recalled

Voters in Labette County have recalled County Commissioner Brian Kinzie. Unofficial results of a special election held Tuesday to recall were 59% YES to recall Kinzie and 41% NO votes to retain Kinzie in office. There were 831 YES votes to recall and 580 NO votes to not recall Kinzie. Tuesday’s vote may have implications on the future of wind energy in the County as the petition to hold the recall election was based on alleged meetings Kinzie had in regard to negotiating with RWE to put windmills in Labette County.

Ballots will be canvassed by the Labette County Commission next Monday, December 13th to determine the official results.

Seattle socialist politician faces tight race in recall push

Preliminary results Tuesday showed Seattle voters narrowly in favor of recalling socialist City Councilmember Kshama Sawant, a firebrand who pushed the city to adopt a $15 minimum wage, raged against hometown tech giant Amazon for its business practices and angered many with her aggressive political tactics. But the election is being conducted by a mail-in vote, so definitive results may not be known for several days as more ballots are counted. And Seattle's election counts are known to swing wildly until final results are posted.
