Considering Reagan said he was there when they liberated concentration camps. Considering Reagan traded arms for hostages and continued to “believe in his heart” that they didn’t even though the evidence said otherwise. Considering Reagan addressed his HUD secretary as Mr. Mayor. Reagan was losing it in his first term. Yet you worship the fucking ground that piece of shit slithered on.

Fuck. Off.

U.S. private payrolls beat expectations in May-ADP

WASHINGTON, June 1 (Reuters) - U.S. private payrolls increased more than expected in May, suggesting that the labor market was slowing only gradually, which could result in the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates elevated for some time.

Private payrolls increased by 278,000 jobs last month, the ADP National Employment report showed on Thursday. Data for April was revised slightly down to show 291,000 jobs added instead of 296,000 as previously reported. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast private employment increasing 170,000.

The U.S. economy continued to crank out jobs in May, with nonfarm payrolls surging more than expected despite multiple headwinds, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Payrolls in the public and private sector increased by 339,000 for the month, better than the 190,000 Dow Jones estimate and marking the 29th straight month of positive job growth.

Lawsuit: West Michigan blueberry farm treated migrant workers unfairly
......The workers are seeking damages, both financial and legal, against the farm through the Trafficking Victim Protection Reauthorization Act, which allows victims of trafficking, including labor trafficking, to sue their traffickers for civil monetary penalties.

In the complaint, the workers contend that First Pick Farms worked with Antonio Sanchez, a field supervisor who recruited and employed migrant workers to staff the farms during blueberry picking season, which normally is during the summer months. The lawsuit states Sanchez was the one who coordinated the harsh working and living conditions for the workers, and the farm operators knew of his conduct while it happened.

In the middle of a July 2017 night, Sanchez told the pair, and others at the North Carolina farm, they'd be leaving for Michigan, according to the lawsuit. The filing says the group was photographed and later given false identification, after being rounded up on vans for the journey. Once they arrived in west Michigan, the group had to contend with harsh working conditions and undesirable living quarters, according to the lawsuit.

“Upon Plaintiffs’ arrival in Michigan, Defendants compelled Plaintiffs to work in grueling conditions picking blueberries as many as twelve hours per day without breaks, seven days per week and to live in employer-provided substandard housing," the lawsuit states.

Workers stayed in a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Wyoming, a suburb of Grand Rapids, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit states that two female workers shared one bedroom, while the other 28 people had to spread through the rest of the home. The house was unfurnished, per the complaint, and its kitchen was too small to adequately serve the 30 people who lived there......

Inflation rose at a 4% annual rate in May, the lowest in 2 years

The inflation rate cooled in May to its lowest annual rate in about two years, the Labor Department reported Tuesday.

The consumer price index, which measures changes in a multitude of goods and services, increased just 0.1% for the month, bringing the annual level down to 4%. That 12-month increase was the smallest since March 2021, when inflation was just beginning to rise to what would become the highest in 41 years.

Retail sales rose 0.3% in May despite pressure from higher inflation and interest rates

NEW YORK (AP) — Americans increased their spending at retailers last month despite pressure from still-high inflation and rising borrowing costs.

Thursday’s report from the Commerce Department showed that retail sales rose 0.3% from April to May, boosted by stronger sales of auto and parts dealers.

Parts sales are up because new cars are still being affected by the chip and supply chain issues. Dealers are short on new cars, and buyers often have to wait several months to get anything even close to what they wanted. Many people have deferred car purchases as a result.

UPS workers vote to authorize nationwide strike if they can't get a deal done with UPS by July 31st. This doesn't mean there will be a strike but it gives the union leaders permission to declare a strike if they see fit.
UPS employees who are represented by the Teamsters voted overwhelmingly on Friday to authorize a nationwide strike that could have far-reaching implications for workers and the economy.

The union said Friday that 97% of workers are in favor of walking off the job if they don’t reach a satisfactory deal with the shipping giant by July 31, when the current contracts expire. The vote does not guarantee there will be a work stoppage, but it gives Teamsters leadership the green light to declare one if they see fit.

In May, the union and UPS began negotiating a new five-year agreement that would set pay and working conditions for more than 300,000 UPS drivers, warehouse workers and other employees. The two sides have reached some tentative agreements on certain points, but much work remains before a contract can be finalized.

Driver in fatal DDOT bus crash terminated from job, top Detroit transit official says
The driver in the fatal Detroit Department of Transportation bus crash that killed a Grosse Pointe Park woman as she walked downtown earlier this month has been terminated from her job, according to a city official.

The news comes after a 36th District Court magistrate on Wednesday called the driver, Geraldine Johnson, a “serious danger to the community” based on her crash history, which included an earlier pedestrian fatality, in 2015.

Mikel Oglesby, Detroit’s executive director of transit, said in a statement that the city is continuing an internal review launched in the wake of the June 2 crash......
....During the proceeding, Magistrate Dawn White referenced eight crashes involving Johnson’s personal vehicle or a bus, including the crash that took the life of Joey Davis in 2015. Not all of those crashes were Johnson’ fault, according to Sara Bonomo, an assistant prosecuting attorney.......
Seems to be really one sided condemnation here that makes no mention of ongoing context of employment conditions that could be the underlying cause here. As public officials continue years of understaffing, toxic scheduling, mandated overtime that endangers the public and robs their workers of their peace of mind and best performance.

Metro Detroit transit systems are suffering from driver shortages. Is raising wages the answer?
...."I look at this between a balance of what my resources are versus what the market requires and within my resources, I'm paying overtime already. I'd rather have the drivers than pay the overtime," Rising said......

....When asked whether the lack of bus drivers was a budget or operational issue, Rising said, "It's a labor shortage issue."
Pay, scheduling causes widespread SMART, DDOT driver shortage, missed routes
The two main bus systems serving Detroit and its suburbs, the Detroit Department of Transportation and the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation, are short upwards of 200 drivers right now. SMART currently has 288 drivers working; DDOT has 388.

“I think it’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” said Burton, a driver for SMART and vice president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1564.
The shortage is an issue for metro Detroit, but one felt nationwide, too. Experts point to a range of factors, from inadequate compensation in a tight job market and retirements to concerns about safety and work-life balance, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic.

C. Mikel Oglesby, executive director of transit for the city of Detroit, speaking at a transit event in Detroit in January said, “This is not just a problem in Michigan, this is a problem in the United States.”......

....Oglesby acknowledged “major challenges” for DDOT in his recent talk but noted that “if you don’t have enough people for the schedule then you just change the schedule for the people that you have.” He said DDOT was providing comparable "revenue miles" to last year and predicted that when enough drivers are able to be hired that service would improve dramatically.
They seem to have created a never ending on going crisis that allows them to operate outside of public safety standards and rules. All the while never mentioning in situations like this that could be overbearingly influential on outcomes like these. People is only human robbing them of their sleep and peace of mind may affect their performance and in situations like this may show up in the most tragic ways.

https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/loc ... bus crash
...The court found Johnson to be a danger. She was given a $100,000 personal bond and if she is released from custody she will not be allowed to drive a vehicle.....

As pandemic-era benefits unwind, Poor People's Campaign wants lawmakers to address poverty
As COVID-19 case counts dwindle, the United States has been rolling back pandemic-era benefits. But one group argues that a lack of resources for escaping poverty is more than just unjust; it's deadly.

Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival – a revival of the 1968 movement launched by Martin Luther King Jr. – aims to highlight the dangers of poverty with a three-day congress on Capitol Hill starting Monday. Hundreds of leaders from over 30 states plan to demand elected officials address poverty in the United States, with participants highlighting a recent report that names poverty as one of the country’s leading risk factors related to death.

The event comes as pandemic-era provisions meant to help low-income families like the child tax credit and expanded Medicare coverage have reached their expiration dates.

“The wrong question keeps being asked: How much does it cost us to address poverty, rather than how much is it (poverty) costing?” said Bishop William Barber II, co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign. “What we can't do is just keep burying our loved ones, burying Americans, burying citizens, burying immigrants, who are dying of poverty needlessly.”.....

US to send $500 million in weapons, military aid to Ukraine, officials say
....This would be the 41st time since the Russian invasion into Ukraine in February 2022 that the U.S. has provided military weapons and equipment through presidential drawdown authority......

According to the Pentagon, the U.S. has delivered more than $15 billion in weapons and equipment from its stocks to Ukraine since the Russian invasion, and has committed an additional $6.2 billion in supplies that haven't yet been identified. The more than $6 billion extra is the result of an accounting error, because the military services overestimated the value of the weapons they pulled off the shelves and sent to Ukraine over the past year.

More broadly, the U.S. has also promised to send more than $16.7 billion in longer-term funding for various weapons, training and other equipment through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, and an additional roughly $2 billion in foreign military financing.....

First-quarter economic growth was actually 2%, up from 1.3% first reported in major GDP revision

The U.S. economy showed much stronger-than-expected growth in the first quarter than previously thought, according to a big upward revision Thursday from the Commerce Department.

Gross domestic product increased at a 2% annualized pace for the January-through-March period, up from the previous estimate of 1.3% and ahead of the 1.4% Dow Jones consensus forecast. This was the third and final estimate for Q1 GDP. The growth rate was 2.6% in the fourth quarter.

US Jobless Claims Drop by Most Since 2021 in Holiday Week

(Bloomberg) -- US unemployment benefits applications fell last week by the most since October 2021 in a week that included the Juneteenth holiday.

Initial jobless claims decreased by 26,000 to 239,000 in the week ended June 24, according to the Labor Department’s Thursday report. The figure was lower than all estimates in a Bloomberg survey of economists.

Private sector companies added 497,000 jobs in June, more than double expectations, ADP says

The U.S. labor market showed no signs of letting up in June, as companies created far more jobs than expected, payroll processing firm ADP reported Thursday.

Private sector jobs surged by 497,000 for the month, well ahead of the downwardly revised 267,000 gain in May and much better than the 220,000 Dow Jones consensus estimate. The increase resulted in the biggest monthly rise since July 2022.

What a bargain at $791 bucks.

13 metro Detroit restaurants pay $88K in back wages and damages to workers and $791 in penalties for violating minimum wage, child labor rules
A federal government investigation of more than a dozen metro Detroit Joe Vicari Restaurant Group operations found the group violated child labor hours, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Thursday.

The labor department says it has recovered $88,020 in back wages and damages for 127 workers at the group's metro Detroit restaurants.

An investigation, according to the labor department, found that the restaurant group violated the Fair Labor Standards Act's (FLSA) minimum wage and overtime provisions.

Workers at 13 locations, the labor department found, were denied their full wages. The restaurant operators were also found to allow a "minor-aged employee to work longer and later than legally permitted." For the child labor violations, the labor department assessed the group $791 in penalties......

Food delivery services sue NYC over minimum pay rates for app-based workers

NEW YORK (AP) — Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub sued New York City on Thursday to block its new minimum pay rules for food delivery workers.

The recently announced rules, touted as a national first, could nearly triple average earnings for app-based delivery workers in the coming years. An increased pay rate of $17.96 an hour is set to take effect July 12.
