Could also go in Mass Shootings, but I'll just drop this here.

At least 5 people killed, 18 injured in a shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs
https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/20/us/color ... index.html

At least five people were killed and 18 others injured in a mass shooting at a gay nightclub on Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, according to police.

Authorities received numerous 911 calls starting at 11:57 p.m. and responded to the scene at Club Q, said Colorado Springs Police Lt. Pamela Castro.

“They did locate one individual who we believe to be the suspect inside,” said Castro. “At this point in time, the suspect is being treated, but is in custody.”

In a statement on social media, Club Q said it was “devastated by the senseless attack on our community” and thanked “the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

Unarmed patrons were able to stop and subdue the suspect before police arrived.

He has been identified as 22 year old Anderson Lee Aldrich - so far they are not yet openly discussing prior criminal record or motive. Nor the weapons, though one was described as a "long rifle".

The Q Club was supposed to be having a Transgender Day of Remembrance brunch event this Sunday. Obviously, not now. :|

I will wholeheartedly speculate if he was firing randomly on patrons at a known gay bar, he was trying to mass murder gay people.

Club Q shooting victim: Daniel Aston “touched a lot of lives in such a short period of time” - Denver Post
Bartender is among 5 people killed in Colorado Springs mass shooting that also wounded 25 people

Daniel Davis Aston was 4 when he first told his mother that he was a boy.

But it took more than a decade for Aston, 28, to come out as transgender and fully embrace his identity, his mother, Sabrina Aston, said Sunday.

He transitioned and found peace, she said. He was as happy now as he’d ever been.

“It’s just unbelievable,” she said. “He had so much more life to give to us, and to all his friends and to himself.”

Daniel Aston was killed Saturday night while bartending at Club Q in Colorado Springs, one of five people shot to death and 25 wounded when a man with a rifle burst into the club just before midnight. His parents, alerted by one of his friends, raced to the emergency room only to find their son never made it that far, said his father, Jeff Aston.

“He never knew a stranger, from the time he was little,” Sabrina Aston said. “He always said, ‘I’m shy,’ but he wasn’t. He wrote poetry, he loved to dress up, he got into drama in high school. He’s an entertainer. That’s what he really loves.”

After Daniel Aston declared at age 4 that he was a boy, he refused to wear girls’ clothing for years, until he was bullied in middle school, Sabrina Aston said. He became depressed and anorexic, she said.

“He tried really hard at being a girl starting at about 11,” Sabrina Aston said. “And finally we had a discussion. He said, ‘I think I’m gay,’ and I said, ‘I think I knew that.’ … Actually, I knew he was trans, but he hadn’t figured that out yet.”

He figured it out in college, she said, starting hormones and undergoing surgery.

“He passed — he could have just said he was a man and nobody would know,” she said. “But he was very proud of it, and very supportive.”

White conservatism is a stinking cesspool of violent nationalism and murderous homo- and transphobia.

Gunman kills 5 at LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs before patrons confront and stop him, police say - CNN
The shooting came as the calendar turned to Transgender Day of Remembrance on Sunday and is reminiscent of the 2016 attack at an LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in which a gunman who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State killed 49 people and wounded at least 53.

Colorado has been the site of some of the most heinous mass shootings in US history, including the 1999 shooting in Columbine High School and the 2012 movie theater shooting in Aurora. Colorado Springs was the site of mass shootings at a Planned Parenthood in November 2015 that left three dead and at a birthday party last year that left six dead.

The bigger question is, not only were no "red flag" laws used in his case, but why was he not prosecuted?

He made a bomb threat while holding his Mom hostage over whatever dispute. There was no bomb. But authorities still had to waste time and resources getting together teams for disarming one. It's still a crime. But he was never prosecuted.

As CJ posted, he is the grandson of a MAGA CA state assemblyman.

Also, Colorado Springs is a so-called "2nd Amendment Sanctuary" where so-called "Constitutional sheriffs" often refuse to invoke the state's red flag laws. And the town is the HQ of F--Kus on the Family.

The GOP/RNC and all of American conservatism has never let up on suppressing LGBTQ people. It's ramped up exponentially since you assholes let Donald Trump take over your party.

Yet another white male mass-murderer from a conservative family ran and shot up another gay bar. You're a willing part of it.

Drag is not exotic dancing or stirppers, a dishonest conflation you tried to make in this thread http://radiofreeliberal.com/viewtopic.p ... 123#p44123. This is a very old-school fascist/Third Reich/Anita Bryant/Ronald Reagan canard currently peddled by Heritage Foundation/Manhattan Institute propagandists like Christopher Rufo.

You eagerly support the most virulently anti-LGBTQ anti-woke fascist politicians in the country. You are the reason anti-LGBTQ anti-woke mass murder thrives.

"Freedom" for conservative whites means violent suppression and elimination of minorities. It always has.

The city still is a center of anti-gay activism, btw.

It was never easy being Club Q in Colorado Springs. - NYT
For years, the city was a center of anti-gay activism.

In its early days, 20 years ago, the site for Club Q was selected in part because of its setting, well back from the nearest roads, which offered its clientele the protection of not being seen entering and leaving.

And though the nightclub has evolved into a place of refuge and comfort for the L.G.B.T.Q. community, being Club Q has never been easy in the intensely conservative Colorado Springs.

So the murderous violence that erupted there on Saturday night was, at once, unimaginable in a place where people come to relax and be accepted for who they are, and somehow stitched into the background of a place that in many ways had evolved in positive directions — until a man in body armor walked into the club and opened fire.

For years, Colorado Springs was a center of anti-gay activism, and served as home base to Christian think tanks and political groups hostile to L.G.B.T.Q. interests, said Richard Skorman, a longtime City Council member and local business owner. Their influence reached a high-water mark in 1992 when those groups drove the passage of a state constitutional amendment that prohibited local governments from passing anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation. The law was later overturned.

“We had that reputation,” Mr. Skorman said. “Colorado was the hate state, and Colorado Springs was the hate city.”

During that time, his restaurant, Poor Richard’s, was repeatedly targeted for being a gay-friendly hangout. Employees regularly received threats and bricks were thrown through the window.

Mr. Skorman was part of a City Council that recognized same-sex partnerships for city employees in 1999. Four years later, a more conservative council revoked the benefits.

But in recent years, he said, anti-gay activism in the city has largely disappeared. The city now hosts an annual pride parade and a fast-growing population has diluted the influence of far-right conservatives.

“What happened is a tragedy,” Mr. Skorman said. “But I don’t think it’s unique to our community. It is happening all across the country. There are a lot of crazy, angry people out there, and it’s very easy for them to get guns.”

About two dozen people gathered for a subdued prayer vigil on Sunday afternoon at a Methodist church near the nightclub.
This article alludes to but does not mention Focus on the Family by name, which moved its headquarters from southern California to Coloroado Springs in the early 1990s. Family Research Council is an outgrowth of Focus on the Family. Steve Bannon acolyte Ralph Norman regularly goes on FRC/Tony Perkins shows.

You're an enthusiastic Ralph Norman backer.

Will the Supreme Court rule for a web designer who won’t work on same-sex weddings?
The Supreme Court on Monday considered whether a Colorado anti-discrimination law violates business owners’ free speech rights
https://www.deseret.com/faith/2022/12/5 ... igion-case

The Supreme Court on Monday is hearing arguments in its biggest religion-related case of the current term.

303 Creative v. Elenis features Lorie Smith, a Colorado web designer who, for religious reasons, does not want to build wedding websites for same-sex couples. She filed a lawsuit challenging her state’s anti-discrimination policy, arguing that it violated her free speech and religious freedom rights.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court agreed to consider the free speech elements of her case and weigh whether Colorado’s efforts to protect the LGBTQ community have interfered with the free speech rights of business owners like Smith.

Legal experts agree that there is much at stake in the case, although they don’t agree on how it should turn out.

[snip][end]

Court ruled 8-2 in favor of Masterpiece Cakeshop. Even Kagan supported the majority.

I suspect they will rule that way again, but I don't have to like it. :|

Conservative justices come to same-sex marriage controversy with minds made up
https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/05/politics ... ium=social

From the beginning of oral arguments on Monday, it appeared the Supreme Court’s conservatives had come to the bench with their minds set. They sidestepped the lack of clear facts in the case, brushed off worst-case consequences and diminished past rulings that would seem to disfavor a Colorado website designer who has refused to serve same-sex couples.

Justice Samuel Alito was even prepared to invoke lines from Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 landmark that gave same-sex couples a right to marry, for the proposition that certain business owners can refuse gay couples.

He noted that the author of the opinion, the now-retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, had referred to “honorable” people who might object to same-sex marriage, and Alito suggested “religious objections to same-sex marriage” could be differentiated from other discrimination, for example, based on race.

Other justices on the right wing highlighted the expressive dimension of website designer Lorie Smith’s work, downplaying that she runs a commercial enterprise subject to the state’s public accommodation laws.

“You’re on your strongest ground,” Justice Amy Coney Barrett told Smith’s lawyer, Kristen Waggoner, “when you’re talking about her sitting down and designing and coming up with the graphics to customize them for the couple.”
And all board cons support this attack on the LGBTQ community, we have proven that.
I sigh in your general direction.

This is just so stupid.

Alliance Defending Fascism is one of those groups that cries religious liberty but is solely focused on anti-LGBTQ legislation and public policy. What standing do these people have to bring this case, which is based on some ridiculous, pre-emptive-gay-panic hypothetical?

I was in web design for a decade and no, it would never occur to me to cry oppression because I MIGHT get a request to build a website for an ADF member, Ralph Norman, Glennfs, or any of these other conservative white supremacists.

:problem:

For starters, none of those people would come to me for web design, any more than any "LGBTQ couple" with any sense would give her their business. :problem:

The only LGBTQ people I could even potentially see going to some Christian Nationalist bigot to get a website built would be the dumb conservative white ones, or Christian Walker. :problem:

Masterpiece was actually a punt which agreed with the cake shop that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission was mean to him. :problem:

I could see the SCOTUS going 6-3 or 5-4 on this, or just smacking it down because it's too stupid even for the cons on there, except for Amy Coney Barrett who is an ADF member that should recuse her own stupid ass. :problem:
