Massachusetts Cop Involved in Planning Deadly Charlottesville Rally Might Finally Get The Boot - The Root
The officer is also a celebrated real estate agent in the city of Woburn, Massachusetts.

A Massachusetts officer who had a major hand in planning the deadly Unite The Right march in Charlottesville, Virginia, is only just now being placed on administrative leave. John Donnelly, 33, who had both security and general planning positions in the organizing of the march also used an alias to post racist and antisemetic comments online. Due to a recent inquiry made by HuffPost, confirmation was obtained that the officer still maintained status within the Woburn Police Department near Boston.

Donnelly can clearly be seen on video from that tragic day on August 12th, 2017 at the Charlottesville rally, right alongside Richard Spencer, another white supremacist whom he was apparently acting as a security guard for. The two and their crew gathered that day under a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee as they posed for photos and conducted livestreams.

As the world watched, Donnelly, Spencer, and hundreds of other white supremacists descended upon the town, spewing hatred and physically assaulting antifascist counter protesters. As you may recall, one neo nazi tragically ended the life of a 32 year old woman as he drove his car through a crowd, while also seriously injuring 19 others.

After Donnelly attended a celebration party held that evening in honor of the day’s events, he apparently returned to his job as a Massachusetts police officer. Not only has he been able to maintain his job for five years after the rally, but he’s also an award winning real estate agent in the town of Woburn, with billboards made in his honor.

She Was Killed by the Police. Why Were Her Bones in a Museum? - NYT
Katricia Dotson’s remains were studied, disputed, displayed and litigated. Lost in the controversy was the life of an American girl and her family.

Though she was trained as a paleoanthropologist, Monge had consulted on several high-profile forensics cases over the years, including one of Philadelphia’s most notorious catastrophes: the 1985 police bombing of the predominantly Black religious group known as MOVE. Unprecedented in the history of U.S. police violence, that aerial attack on a residential home triggered an inferno that killed 11 people, five of them children, and devoured more than 60 homes in a close-knit African American neighborhood. All of this happened just one mile from where Monge grew up.
This segment was filmed at Penn, but the class was distributed through Princeton University, where Monge taught as a visiting professor. More than a thousand people viewed it, with no recorded complaints. But in early 2021, as the Penn Museum faced ongoing public criticism about its use of the Morton skulls (more than 50 of which belonged to enslaved Africans), several people connected to Penn began to discuss the other remains in its storage rooms. One sent a tip about the open secret of the MOVE bones to Abdul-Aliy Muhammad, a community organizer from West Philadelphia. Muhammad called another source at Penn, who mentioned the Coursera video.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” Muhammad, who identifies as nonbinary, told me. Here was a white instructor at an Ivy League university using the MOVE bones as teaching aids while standing in front of the Morton collection. To Muhammad, this was the “legacy of a kind of a colonial and white supremacist need to hold on to the bodies, the remains of the bodies of Black people, to prove or disprove some kind of scientific experiment.” They immediately began drafting a reported opinion piece.

Maya Kassutto, a freelance writer who had worked for Monge as a Penn undergrad, was also writing an article about the bones — specifically the hazy details around their provenance. Some of the country’s most experienced forensic experts concluded in 1985 that the remains Monge handled in the video, which were labeled Body B-1 in the original MOVE files, belonged to a 14-year-old girl named Katricia Dotson. Katricia’s death certificate lists both her name and the words “Unknown Case B-1.” Her family believed she was buried in December of that year. How did her bones end up in a museum? And why did Monge say they were unidentified?

Kassutto’s reporting appeared on WHYY’s Billy Penn news site, and Muhammad’s op-ed ran in The Philadelphia Inquirer on April 21, just one day after a jury convicted the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin of murdering George Floyd. Coming at such a sensitive moment, the public response was instant. The American Board of Forensic Anthropology called Monge’s Coursera class “an egregious mistreatment of human remains.” Princeton removed the class from its online offerings.

The museum arranged for the remains to be transferred to a local funeral home and issued a formal apology to the surviving members of MOVE. At a news conference in late April 2021, Katricia’s 67-year-old mother, Consuewella Africa, told the university to “go to hell with that [expletive].” Protesters gathered outside the gates of the Penn Museum, demanding justice for the dead. Yet key questions about how many MOVE bones went to Penn, and to whom they belonged, remained unsettled. Monge has long argued that the bones belong not to Katricia Dotson but to an older unknown woman, and that the work of identifying that woman — restoring her personhood — is a matter of grave significance. She is currently suing 39 parties (including Kassutto, Muhammad, the university and The New York Times) for defamation, citing numerous passages that, in her view, imply that her work is unprofessional or racially motivated and noting that she has spent her entire career working for social justice.

In the 18 months after the news conference, I interviewed more than 70 people, including members of the Dotson family, current and former members of MOVE, students and faculty members at Penn and more than a dozen forensic experts, several of whom consulted on the original MOVE case. I also reviewed thousands of pages of archival documents, witness testimony, medical records and court filings. Four different law firms hired by Penn, Princeton and the city of Philadelphia also conducted lengthy investigations into what policies, if any, allowed human bones from a painful tragedy to be used in classes at two of the country’s most elite universities. The question of the remains circled around matters of institutional authority and the deepest structure of American racism. But in the furious debate over who did or did not have the right to restore this young girl’s identity, something — someone — went missing, and that was Katricia Dotson herself.
Much more in link.

Forensic anthropology isn't taught at many schools. However, UF was and is one. I have a friend who studied it, she works in the TX coroner's office now. It was taught by Bill Maples, who exhumed the Tsar's family, and Tony Falsetti, who investigated the ValuJet crash. I think the latter is still there.

My brother lived in Philly. He lived only blocks away from where the MOVE bombing happened. He didn't just see it on TV.

The NAGPRA laws say the Smithsonian and museums like Penn are supposed to be returning all bodily and grave materials to tribes "with all due haste". Well, some are definitely taking their time. I knew another guy (did archaeology, natch) in grad school who always used to bitch about all the red tape from NAGPRA. Huh, what a shock, he's a Trumper now.

Retired Boise police captain tied to white supremacist website posts, conference - Idaho Statesman
A retired Boise police captain — one of multiple officers who brought forward allegations about former Chief Ryan Lee — was scheduled to speak at a conference this weekend held by an organization known for white supremacist views. Matthew Bryngelson, who retired in August after nearly 24 years with the Boise Police Department, appeared on the American Renaissance Conference speaker list under the apparent pseudonym Daniel Vinyard. American Renaissance is a website and former print magazine that founder Jared Taylor characterizes as “race realist.” Posts on the site focus on white superiority and arguments that people of color are inherently less intelligent than white people and contribute more to crime and other societal ills.

The conference was held in person in Burns, Tennessee, where local faith leaders denounced the gathering. Blog posts that appear to be authored by Bryngelson include him recounting the point in his police career when he “became aware of the violent tendencies of Blacks.” Bryngelson did not return a phone call or text from the Idaho Statesman.

Black Man Shot in the Head by Cop After Being Pulled Over for Tinted Windows

Tinted windows and a modified exhaust pipe are why Derrick Kittling’s Chevrolet Silverado was pulled over in Alexandria, Louisiana, earlier this month. And in 58-seconds, an officer shot the 45-year-old Black father of three in the head.

This weekend, Louisiana State Police, in coordination with the Rapides Parish District Attorney’s office, provided the first look at multiple videos, including body and dash cam footage, from the Nov. 6 shooting. The update, which included a press conference Sunday as well as a 12-minute video dissecting the footage, also revealed the name of the officer involved—Rapides Parish Deputy Rodney Anderson—and why the routine stop escalated in the first place.

5 officers charged after Black man paralyzed in police van

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Five Connecticut police officers were charged Monday with cruelly neglecting a Black man after he was partially paralyzed in the back of a police van, despite his repeated and desperate pleas for help.

Randy Cox, 36, was being driven to a New Haven police station June 19 for processing on a weapons charge when the driver braked hard at an intersection to avoid a collision, causing Cox to fly headfirst into a metal partition in the van.

The problem there is bad as you have told us and as I know because of my family member. Police problem, that is.

Real reform for most of the country could start here, but it will take a whole lot of support.

This film would be propaganda, I assume based on who is doing it or trying to.
I sigh in your general direction.

Columbus police chief responds after officer seen high-fiving Proud Boy - NBC News
A Columbus Division of Police officer was caught on tape this past weekend high-fiving a member of a white supremacist group, drawing a response from the department’s chief.

The incident took place Saturday morning outside a Clintonville church where a scheduled drag story time event had to be canceled due to safety concerns.

In the video, the officer is confronted by a woman who said her son was gay. The officer went on to say he was supporting the Proud Boys’ right to protest and not supporting their message.

The “Holi-drag” storytime event was to feature three drag queens reading stories to children and performing holiday songs. Dozens of armed members of the Proud Boys and the Patriot Front, many wearing tactical gear, followed through with their online threats to march through the streets of Clintonville and rally at the church.

Columbus Chief of Police Elaine Bryant said the officer was part of a dialogue team who was there to help defuse the situation.

“A video has been shown online that shows one of our dialogue team member high fiving a member of the Proud Boys,” she said in a video statement. “We understand how this looks and how this could make community members feel. However, this was not done to show solidarity, but an attempt to defuse a tense situation.”
She needs to step down.

San Francisco killer police robots policy halted after backlash - SF Chronicle

Good!
After approving a new version of the police policy that bans officers from using robots to kill dangerous suspects such as mass shooters and suicide bombers, supervisors separately sent the original deadly robot provision of the policy back for further review.

The board’s Rules Committee may now choose to refine that provision — placing tighter limits on when police can use bomb-bearing robots with deadly force — or abandon it entirely, leaving in place the prohibition passed Tuesday.

Supervisors are expected to take a final vote on the new version of the policy that bans deadly robots — for now, at least — next week.

The fight is part of a larger Bay Area conflict about how to balance public safety with modern technology while safeguarding civil liberties. In September, San Francisco supervisors approved a controversial policy to let police temporarily monitor live surveillance feeds in some cases, despite critics who thought it trampled on privacy rights.

“The people of San Francisco have spoken loud and clear: There is no place for killer police robots in our city,” Supervisor Dean Preston said in a statement after Tuesday’s vote. He added that the city “should be working on ways to decrease the use of force by local law enforcement, not giving them new tools to kill people.”

Ex-Minneapolis officer sentenced on state charges in Floyd’s death - WP
A former Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd’s back as he gasped for air beneath Derek Chauvin’s knee was sentenced to 42 months on a state charge of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

J. Alexander Kueng, 29, pleaded guilty in October as part of a plea deal that avoided what would have been a third criminal trial in Floyd’s May 2020 death. In exchange, state prosecutors dropped a count of aiding and abetting second-degree unintentional murder. Kueng is the third of four ex-officers to be sentenced on state charges in Floyd’s killing.

Kueng appeared remotely during an online hearing Friday from a federal prison in Lisbon, Ohio, where he is currently serving a 36-month federal sentence for violating Floyd’s federal civil rights in the fatal arrest. As part of the state plea deal, Kueng will serve his state and federal sentences concurrently in federal prison.

Hennepin County District Court Judge Peter A. Cahill affirmed the plea deal. Asked if he had anything to say, Kueng, who wore a mask and a green prison garb, replied, “Nothing, your honor.”

Kueng was a rookie officer on his third full-time shift when he and another rookie, Thomas K. Lane, responded to a 911 call about an alleged counterfeit $20 bill being used at a South Minneapolis convenience store. On the scene, they encountered Floyd, 46, sitting in a parked car.

Chauvin and his partner, Tou Thao, arrived on the scene as Kueng and Lane struggled to detain Floyd inside a squad car.
As stated many times on this board: you don't have to be white to be a white supremacist.

Teen Says Cop Had Car Sex, Used Drugs With Her. It Takes More Than That to Get Fired From SFPD - SF Standard
Less than a year after joining the San Francisco Police Department in 2014, Rodger Ponce De Leon heard out of the blue from a teenager. They became Facebook friends, swapped nude photos and ultimately wound up in Ponce De Leon’s car, where he snorted cocaine, she smoked meth and they had sex.

This is the version of events SFPD heard from the teenager herself, Jasmine Abuslin, as a scandal unfolded around her in summer 2016. Abuslin alleged that she had sexual encounters with more than two dozen law enforcement officers from around the Bay Area, including at times when she was underage. She told SFPD that she had sex with Ponce De Leon on three occasions after her 18th birthday.

Ponce De Leon was stripped of his badge and his gun while awaiting discipline over the allegations, which are detailed here for the first time after The Standard won an extended legal battle to unseal court records.

But he wasn’t fired.

Instead SFPD assigned Ponce De Leon to a windowless room in Potrero Hill performing menial tasks with a morose group of officers who also have troubled pasts. He’s been there for more than six years earning a hefty salary that peaked in 2020 at nearly $240,000 for a combined total of about $1.2 million including benefits, according to city payroll records.

Together with 56 other officers sent by police brass to the windowless room since the beginning of 2016 and late 2022, Ponce De Leon and his colleagues have cost San Francisco an estimated $17 million, The Standard has found.
How are they any better than Vatican brass? :?

Police in schools have outsize effect on Black children, report says

The presence of police in schools actively jeopardizes the safety of Black students compared to their counterparts of other races, according to a report published this month.

Black students were subjected to more than 80% of the incidents of police violence accounted for in the survey, which analyzed more than 285 incidents over a decade. At least 60% of police assaults on students resulted in serious injury to the students, including broken bones, concussions and hospitalizations. The report also cited 24 cases of sexual assault on students and five student deaths as a result of police force in schools. It was published by the Advancement Project, a civil rights organization, and the Alliance for Educational Justice, a coalition of groups working toward equity in public schools.

At least 74 Illinois sheriff’s departments vow to defy state assault weapons ban

Just days after Illinois became the ninth U.S. state to ban assault rifles, the state already hit a roadblock to implementing the law: defiant sheriff's offices.

At least 74 Illinois sheriff's departments have publicly vowed to defy elements of a recent gun-control law signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, which banned assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and switches. The offices have vowed to not check if weapons are registered with the state or house individuals arrested only for not complying with the law.
