Sorry but gerrymandering is no longer relevant

Post by Glennfs »

If it ever was

https://www.politico.com/interactives/2 ... -district/

Link shows that whichever party wint the house it won't be because of gerrymandering.

This New York Times article shows that Republicans have a 5 seat advantage in congressional districts.
Not nearly enough to claim gerrymandering has anything to do with results.

It's not just wrong just because or only if it impacts the ultimate outcome.

That would be like saying "taking illegal campaign donations is fine if the candidate loses".

And yes, I think it's wrong when either party does it.

District designation should be done by a nonpartisan or bipartisan commission, or an AI (the programmers also need to be carefully selected is as to avoid program bias).

Gerrymandering remains very real in Los Angeles.

It used to be the textbook case of same. Literally. Districts on the map really did look like weird reptiles, especially the way that said creatures would look after they ran out in the road once too often. It's a little better now, but only a little.

The current mess with The Covert Recording reveals how now ethnic identitity groups fight over representation with the pitifully few council seats that the whole city must divide up. No matter what you do, someone's going to get screwed because someone else had more political clout.

It's probably relevant to people living in those districts.

The New York Times says there are 210 districts tilted towards democrats and 215 towards Republicans.
You can't get much more even than that

Those numbers lack context, therefore they are meaningless.

They certainly don't apply to the LA city council, since it only has 15 seats.

While there have been many changes, we are still somewhat saddled with the original map, which was intended to create safe seats for Republicans, even though the city elections are supposedly non-partisan. That and the guaranteed lack of meaningful representation in such large districts are why neighborhoods are perpetually at war.

I doubt there is any such thing as a bipartisan committee. For example the so called California bipartisan deal has an equal number of Republicans and Democrats along with 2 members from parties to the left of the democratic party.
