First inter-racial kiss on TV.

BTW, the network got weeks and weeks of hate mail after that first aired.

She wanted to quit the show; MLK actually convinced her to stay on.

She also worked at NASA to help diversity their recruitment program.

An average typical day in her life she showed more courage and decency (often just because of who she wasnt) than the ENTIRE trump and kushner and mcconnell families combined in their lifetimes.

Nichelle Nichols decided to leave Star Trek and informed Gene Rodenberry who tried to talk her out of it but her mind was made up. That weekend, she attended an NCAAP banquet where she met a fan of hers who changed her mind on the role; it was Dr. Martin Luther King.

I thought it was a Trekkie, and so I said, 'Sure.' I looked across the room and whoever the fan was had to wait because there was Dr. Martin Luther King walking towards me with this big grin on his face. He reached out to me and said, 'Yes, Ms. Nichols, I am your greatest fan.' He said that Star Trek was the only show that he, and his wife Coretta, would allow their three little children to stay up and watch. [She told King about her plans to leave the series because she wanted to take a role that was tied to Broadway.] I never got to tell him why, because he said, 'you cannot, you cannot...for the first time on television, we will be seen as we should be seen every day, as intelligent, quality, beautiful, people who can sing dance, and can go to space, who are professors, lawyers." Dr. King Jr went further stating "If you leave, that door can be closed because your role is not a black role, and is not a female role; he can fill it with anybody even an alien."

Her daughter Kerry Karsian, a casting agent, said Carroll died at her home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on Saturday. Her other daughter Tara Karsian wrote on Instagram that they want everyone to "honor her by having a raucous laugh at absolutely anything today (and everyday forward) because besides her brilliant talent and love, she leaves my sister Kerry and I with the greatest gift of all, imbuing us with humor and the ability to laugh...even in the saddest of times."

Issey Miyake Brought the Avant-Garde Down to Earth

Most designers would give anything for the staying power that Issey Miyake had. The designer, who passed away at 84, straddled the worlds of avant-garde innovation and mass appeal comfortably, becoming known for his pleated separates as well as his hit Bao Bao bag, with its easily identifiable futuristic shape.

After launching his studio in 1970, the Japan-born designer became a mad scientist of clothes, treating the atelier as his own personal laboratory, or toyshop. He brought a sense of fun to his craft, whether it was a half-filled balloon worn as a hat, headpieces that resembled slices of cheese, or a group of models connected by a single piece of red fabric, while his shows featured playful elements like exuberant dance performances or flying saucer-shaped balloons floating above the models’ heads.

The largest and most deadly wildfire of the year in California has claimed its fourth victim, a veteran fire lookout who's been on the job in the middle of the blaze.

As the McKinney Fire continues to burn through the northern part of the state, one of four people killed in the massive blaze was Kathy Shoopman, 74, the Buckhorn-Bally fire lookout at the Klamath National Forest, United States Forest Service officials confirmed Monday. Starting as a lookout in the 1970s, Shoopman passed away in her longtime home as the fire swept into the Klamath River community.

PIttsburgh’s Eugene Palermo Was Inspiration For WWE’s Eugene

Eugene Palermo, who died on Sunday, August 7, was much more than the ringside attendant and “unofficial mascot” who looked after wrestlers’ ring garb at events his father Bucky Palermo worked as an official appointed by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. He was a Pittsburgh institution.

Born July 10, 1965, Eugene Palermo was a beaming, joyful soul who immediately brightened the day for all who met him. He was the real-life inspiration for Nick Dinsmore’s “Eugene” character in the WWE, but that depiction couldn’t be further from the real Palermo.
