This whole matter is a great example of fact-omission propaganda. The idea that he's a bad president only works if you discount the Republican failure to respond in a timely and effective manner to the pandemic, and their encouragement of Putin and his gangster cabal until they attacked Ukraine militarily. These two massive dislocations are what trashed the economy and he was not president when their underlying causes started. The normal time lag of human affairs meant that Biden inherited the sins of his predecessor.

I realize that Americans have a long history of crucifying the current president for problems caused by his predecessors in office, and that usually it's the Democrat who's in the way when the proverbial shit finally hits the proverbial fan. Both of these are facts of American politics, but neither changes the historical reality that Biden is actually a victim, not a perp, when it comes to these.

Under Biden the pandemic aid they constrict and put-up hoops and sick the authorities on the vulnerable while streamlining and automizing aid for corporate and business and wealthy folks who actively use the funds to prey upon the vulnerable and make themselves immune to the consequences. That is sure to create volatile economic conditions. Bidens lack of difference to republicans is what is dragging his ability to lead down.

This has a core of truth to it.

There's also the problem that the public rejected public health measures, and finally the highway blockades, death threats, and general agitation on the subject caused authorities to simply stop offering guidance. Since I got back to LA, there have been a few feeble warnings that mask mandates may have to be re-imposed if cases keep increasing, but everyone knows they will never actually do this, and even if they did, there aren't enough cops in the world to enforce it. The summer is not going to be a happy one.

It is technically possible to blame Biden for this, since the buck stops at his desk, but not without keeping in mind that he inherited an impossible situation with no hope of correction.

Democrats Schumer and Manchin strike deal to cut costs for seniors

Senate Democrats have reached agreement on a key portion of a revised domestic policy bill, once known as Build Back Better, which would allow Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Democrats have worked for years to give Medicare this power, always falling short in the face of GOP opposition, but this time they hope to move it forward as part of a broader, as-yet-unfinished economic package, anxious to provide relief to voters buffeted to tackle sky-high inflation and a possible recession.

Retired Justice Stephen Breyer joining Harvard law faculty

WASHINGTON (AP) — Retired Justice Stephen Breyer is getting a different title: professor.

Harvard said Friday that Breyer, who retired from the Supreme Court June 30, is re-joining its law school faculty. Breyer is a graduate of the law school and first joined the Harvard faculty in 1967. He continued to teach at Harvard after he became a federal appeals court judge in 1980 until former President Bill Clinton nominated him to the Supreme Court in 1994.

Jackie Robinson Museum opens after 14 years of planning

NEW YORK (AP) — Long dreamed about and in development for longer than the big league career of the man it honors, the Jackie Robinson Museum opened Tuesday in Manhattan with a gala ceremony attended by the widow of the barrier-breaking ballplayer and two of his children.

Rachel Robinson, who turned 100 on July 19, watched the half-hour outdoor celebration from a wheelchair in the 80-degree Fahrenheit (27-degree Celsius) heat, then cut a ribbon to cap a project launched in 2008.

'They were just leaving them on the street': Texas Gov. Abbott has sent over 6,100 immigrants to DC as he expands to NYC

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent over 6,100 immigrants from the border to Washington, DC, his office said on Friday

After the 36-hour journey to DC's Union Station, migrants who exit the charter buses are met with volunteers from mutual aid organizations to help them get settled but not officials from the local or federal government, NPR reported.

The Supreme Court rewarded religious schools. Maine lawmakers fought back.

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that taxpayers in Maine had to cover the costs of private religious education even when Christian indoctrination was front and center. It was a horrible decision loudly derided by church/state separation advocates. But state lawmakers may have found a way to nullify its effects.

Carson v. Makin involved a voucher program that allowed students in rural parts of Maine to have access to free education, even if that meant attending a private school. The state already said it would cover private school tuition, even at church-run schools, as long as the education students received was secular in nature. But a lawsuit was filed by parents who wanted to send their kids to Christian schools that, among other things, promoted Creationism and discriminating against LGBTQ people in hiring. The Supreme Court essentially said the state was forbidden from discriminating against those schools on the basis of religion… which meant taxpayers would theoretically have to pay for religious indoctrination. As Justice Sonia Sotomayor put it in her dissent, “Today, the Court leads us to a place where separation of church and state becomes a constitutional violation.”

Photographer Captures Moving Portraits of Last WWII Veterans and Learns Their Survival Stories

Photographer Jeff Rease has spent the last three years taking portraits of World War II veterans around the world. The project, called Portraits of Honor, is part of Rease's goal of preserving and sharing stories from the war, —which is especially meaningful since the number of WWII survivors is declining every year. Since 2018, Rease has taken nearly 300 pictures of WWII veterans. He has traveled as far as France to meet with them. Rease recently created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the costs associated with the portraits, which he provides for free to the veterans. "I couldn't keep doing things on my own if I wanted to reach as many people as I could," Rease said on the donation website. "So I went the GoFundMe route, and pretty easily started a campaign. I couldn't have done this without GoFundMe." Here are a few of the portraits Rease has taken for Portraits of Honor:

Russian separatists release 10, including 2 US veterans

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Two U.S. military veterans who disappeared three months ago while fighting Russia with Ukrainian forces were among 10 prisoners, including five British nationals, released by Russian-backed separatists as part of a prisoner exchange mediated by Saudi Arabia, officials said Wednesday.

Alex Drueke, 40, and Andy Huynh, 27, went missing in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine near the Russian border June 9. They had traveled to Ukraine on their own and became friends because both are from Alabama.

Geneticist who unmasked lives of ancient humans wins medicine Nobel

This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded for pioneering studies of human evolution that harnessed precious snippets of DNA found in fossils that are tens of thousands of years old.

The work of Svante Pääbo, a geneticist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA) in Leipzig, Germany, led to the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome and the discovery of a new group of hominins called the Denisovans, and also spawned the fiercely competitive field of palaeogenomics.

Yeah, that's good stuff. Among other things, the Neanderthals and Denisovans aren't evolutionary steps from early protohominids to modern humans. They're separately evolved subspecies of homo sapiens. Interbreeding appears to have been considerable. Amazing that they can sequence DNA that old, let alone find similar sequences in our genome.

Discoveries like that deserve Nobels, since they change the way we look at the universe.

One wonders what will replace homo sapiens if we don't get our act together.

President Biden Signs New Global Privacy Safe-Harbor Order

President Joe Biden on Friday signed an executive order implementing a United States-European Union agreement on new cross-border data privacy protections, protections that have been on shifting sands since an international court threw out a previous agreement.

The Executive Order on Enhancing Safeguards for United States Signals Intelligence Activities(opens in new tab) (E.O.) outlines the steps the U.S. is taking under the new EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. The framework is essentially a data protection safe harbor for companies that agree to comply with it.

Senate passes same-sex marriage protections

The Senate passed legislation Tuesday to enshrine same-sex marriage protections in federal law, bringing the bill a critical step closer to President Joe Biden’s desk.

Senators spent months negotiating adding language to the bill related to religious liberty, a bid to attract the necessary 10 GOP votes to break a filibuster. The legislation still needs to clear the House, a likely easy lift since a previous version was approved by nearly 50 House Republicans and all Democrats.
