1 ouf of 32 NFL head coaches are black

Post by gounion »

That's a deplorable number. The WaPo article I posted in the KC/Buffalo game thread had an import point:
The NFL so often punishes its followers for their devotion. Its owners have plundered cities for new stadiums and effectively blackballed a Super Bowl quarterback for protesting police violence. The sport brutalizes its players. The league is withholding the details of an investigation into a culture of sexual harassment within the Washington franchise. It owns a shameful history of equitable hiring for Black coaches. It dares you to love it.
The lack of black coaches is deplorable, but is going to remain this way for one reason: The owners don't give a shit if they are all a bunch of racists. They don't want the best coach, they want the one they are most comfortable with. And that's a fellow white guy.

It's so damned bad that NFL Commissioner Pete Rozell had to implement the Rozell Rule, where the teams had to at least pretend they would look at black coaching candidates, by telling them they HAD to interview at least ONE black candidate. Not hire them, heaven forbid, but they had to pretend they had at least considered one.

And that's pretty much all they've done. Via USA Today:
That’s not to say that any coach at any level should be hired because he or she is Black; it’s more to say that while the NFL keeps pace with white mediocrity and has always done so, it’s inarguable that on the whole, Black head coaches are held to a higher standard, and given far less oxygen with which to navigate any kind of roster and cultural architecture.

Need proof from this season? Let’s start with Giants head coach Joe Judge, who has been a disaster from start to finish in his two-year tenure. He has a 10-23 record, his playcalling and talent deployment tend to be a joke at the best of times (Exhibit Z right here), and there are reports that Judge’s own players want him out even as ownership holds fast to the idea that Judge is the guy to turn the franchise around. Judge’s Giants lost their last six games, and seven of their final eight

Need more proof? The Panthers hired Matt Rhule two years ago. Rhule has the same 10-23 record Judge has, Carolina lost their last seven games in 2021, and eight of their final nine. Rhule has overseen similarly horrible roster and talent deployment decisions, and if you want to know how clear he is on his own quarterback situation after two full seasons… well, this ain’t good.
Here's white privilege at work in the NFL:
On Thursday the Houston Texans, an N.F.L. franchise worth $3.7 billion in 2021, announced that it had interviewed Josh McCown for the role of head coach. The Texans fired their previous head coach, David Culley, on Jan. 13, after just one season. (The Texans finished 4-13.)

It’s odd to me that the Texans interviewed Josh McCown, because he doesn’t have any experience as an N.F.L. head coach. Or as an N.F.L. assistant coach. Or as a coach of any kind at the professional or college level. (He has, however, coached high school football.) Josh McCown is currently an N.F.L. quarterback. In fact, both the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars were interested in adding him to their rosters as recently as October to serve as a backup QB.

It’s not uncommon for former players to become N.F.L. head coaches. As of right now, there are seven such coaches, including Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans and Kliff Kingsbury of the Arizona Cardinals.

But no one goes straight from the field to the top job. “I don’t believe there’s anyone in recent memory who would have transitioned from being a player into becoming an N.F.L. head coach without any coaching experience before,” Bill Barnwell, a staff writer at ESPN.com, told me.

But McCown has had not just one interview for the head coaching job with the Texans, but two — the Texans talked to him about the position last year, according to the Houston Chronicle reporter John McClain. And the sportswriter and television host Mike Florio reported that the Texans are so enthusiastic about hiring McCown that they are hoping another team interviews him for an open head coaching position to legitimize their choice. (Florio also called the potential hiring “crazy.”)

David Culley, on the other hand, was an N.F.L. assistant coach for 27 years before he finally got the chance to serve as a head coach in the league. He coached in Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Baltimore. As the Texans head coach, he was given a very, very bad team that had lost almost all of its stars in trades, and he did a manful job of winning four games. (Successful N.F.L. coaches have often had bad first seasons, and, I must repeat, the Houston Texans were hot garbage.) But he has now joined a depressing club — the 18th N.F.L. head coach since 1994 to get fired after one year on the job.

David Culley is also Black. He was one of three Black head coaches in the N.F.L. in 2021. With his firing and with the sacking of the Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, there is now one Black head coach left in the N.F.L., the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin. Meanwhile, nearly 60 percent of N.F.L. players are Black.

Owners seem to have less patience with nonwhite N.F.L. coaches. In 2019, the sports website The Undefeated published results from a study that found that from 2009 to 2018 nonwhite head coaches averaged much shorter tenures than their white counterparts and were less likely to land a second head coaching position after getting fired. As Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr put it, they get “half the runway of their white counterparts, requiring gargantuan expectations to succeed in impossible scenarios.”
This is indefensible.

No NFL team is firing or hiring a coach based on race. There will probably be 2 African Americans hired this time around. But know that the first guy hired will be the Dallas DC.

That is pure bullshit so tell me which white coach was hired over a better qualified African American.
Hint there is one but there were special circumstances surrounding the hire.

Let’s just remember that they had to put in a special rule so they would even INTERVIEW black coaches.

Again, Glenn, so white coaches are simply superior to black coaches, right?

Lyin liberals doing what liberals do best lue. Show me anywhere anytime I said that. It is just a symptom of your liberal white guilt.
Again which coach was hired over a better qualified African American.
Spoiler alert it was Urban Myer but that was a special deal where the owner believed he could bring his mastery of college football to the pro game.
Of the African American's who were coaches in 2018 most were failures. Why you ask, because most people who become head coaches in the NFL fail.
Being a good coordinator does get you a shot at being a head coach. But does not mean you will be successful.

Here are the top two African American candidates. Personally I think Leftwich will be great. Because he has excelled at every task he has ever taken on.
As for Bienienmy I don't have as much confidence. He has built his reputation being OC with Kansas City. How hard is it to be successful coaching Mahomes

Look, there's only TWO possible reasons that there's only 1 black coach out of 32 teams, in a league that 70% of the players are black:

1. Discrimination against black coaches by the owners.
2. White coaches are superior to blacks.

So, Glenn, which is it? Make your case. Because let's be clear, even Roger Goodell says it's discrimination.

Let's have a reality check. For two years running, Houston has been interested in former QB Josh McCown as head coach. He's not had any coaching experience at any level. Via Sports Illustrated:
McCown has emerged as a dark-horse entry into the Texans’ head coaching search one year after he first interviewed with them for the head coaching vacancy that went to David Culley, who was fired after a 4-13 seaon.

How can this be?

It can be as the result of one or more of the following four things:

1. The Texans truly see greatness in coach McCown - greatness that other NFL teams in need to not seem to see. (We know the Eagles liked the idea of him as an assistant - but not as the man in charge.)

2. The Texans are actually interested in hiring him in another, lower-level capacity.

3. The Texans are doing somebody a favor - this a “courtesy interview” (and Houston has conducted a few of those.)

4. McCown, despite his “coach on the field” reputation, has previously coached only at the high school level, including coaching quarterbacks for his sons’ team at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C., and is therefore getting Houston interest because he’s got a friend in high places.

McCown, as it happens, is close with Texans exec Jack Easterby.

“The Buddy System” and even blatant nepotism run rampant in the NFL. Owners’ kids get to be executives. Coaches kids get to be assistants. It’s really cool that the 2013 staff featured a trio of “kids” named Kyle Shanahan, Mike LaFleur and Sean McVay. But it never happens if Kyle’s dad isn’t Mike Shanahan, if Mike’s brother isn’t LaFleur or if Sean’s dad isn’t John McVay.

The Texans are building an organization that will surely be populated in a similar manner. The Patriots connection is one reason GM Nick Caserio is here; his interviews will reflect that background (see Brian Flores), and his days at tiny John Carroll, where a couple generations of graduates keep hiring one another, will as well.

McCown grew up on a ranch in Jacksonville, Texas, and played at Sam Houston State, meaning he’s double-tied to this area and this organization. But is he one of the “best candidates,” or simply a highly “comfortable” one?

The Texans eventually will owe explanations to their “stockholders” (that’s you, the fan) about this process, They will almost certainly have good reasons for their actions.

Actually, quite a bit. Mahomes has struggled as defenses were able to adjust to his playing style, and he's had to adjust himself. A great coach helps him do that. And if Harry Reid says you deserve to be a head coach, why is no one listening to him?

You are saying there's only TWO black coaches eligible to be head coaches, and you only think ONE is good enough? Do you think Josh McCown would be better?

Here's the problem the NFL has: The only time black coaches are given a chance, it's with basket case teams, and they get one, maybe two years, then they're gone. No possibility to draft or trade to better teams, and they are chucked out.

Let's just remember that Jimmy Johnson's first year at Dallas, he only won one game.

It's pretty great when you cold-stack the deck against black coaches, giving them no chance to succeed, then you fire them, saying "see? I told you black coaches aren't any good!"

I did not know this but I’m not surprised.

Someone set the timer and see how long it takes Glennfs to claim it was 100 years ago and tell Black coaches how grateful they should be.

I WAS incorrect, it is the ROONEY rule, NOT the Rozelle rule. It was implemented 20 years ago, so it's been sooooo successful.

But Glenn tells us that there is no problem, the Rooney rule is working great and there is zero discrimination, it's just that white coaches in nearly every case just more qualified and better choices than any black coach candidate. I guess he thinks it's simply the natural order of things.

Any time a conservative white male brings up that old canard of qualified negroes, they're just repeating old segregationist propaganda about Black inferiority. They've done this in everything from school admissions to jobs to loans to voting to military service, for which the only relevant qualifications were being 1- male, 2- conservative, and 3- white.

One thing about the right is they never make a new argument. It's always a retread, and when they are shown to be wrong, they just backtrack a bit.

First it was blacks didn't have the intellectual capability to read. They are always seen as a lesser race, and never at any point in conservative history did they admit at the time that blacks were EVER being discriminated against. They ONLY admit it in hindsight, and somehow blame it on liberals when they do admit it.

They never would admit that blacks were discriminated against in sports. It's just that were no black players that were better or more qualified than any white player at all. Then, due to social pressures, they hired only a few token players. Some teams, like the Washington team, refused to hired blacks at all until threatened by the Kennedy Administration, as they were moving into a new stadium built on federal land with federal money.

The funny thing is, being the ONLY non-integrated team, the all-white team were LOSERS. They didn't start winning until they integrated.

But it's the same thing with colleges. They pretended there wasn't any blacks that were qualified to go to college. Glenn still argues that blacks shouldn't be allowed into college over "more qualified whites".

Sadly, the Supreme Court may well make his most fervent dream come true.

But he's making the argument that there is ZERO discrimination in the hiring of coaches in the NFL. So, the corollary must be true - blacks are intellectually inferior to be coaches in the NFL. Right, Glenn?

Yes conservative whites do not see their legacy of rampant, government-forced discrimination as being discriminatory, or using the government and vigilante violence to deliberately victimize everyone they come in contact with as victimizing acts. They're the poor, hapless victims of racism by the general public, if they're not allowed to do it, or stopped from doing it.

They kid themselves that so-called de-facto housing segregation was the result of individuals choosing to live in proximity to each other. It's why they cannot tolerate any discussion of their redlining and blockbusting policies.

Same for military segregation. Since they couldn't trot out the old saw of the black rapist in these all-male settings, they could always fall back on the same intellectual inferiority canard they still apply to coaches and QBs.

These are some of the biggest known perverts on the planet, talking about everyone else having unnatural desires. I mean, honestly, who GAF about their blinkered opinions about negro inferiority. Problem with them is, then they make policy out of it while denying the policies exist. :problem:

They interviewed ten for the spot. They only interviewed ONE black man, KC OC Bienienmy. And he was the last interview, because they were REQUIRED to interview a black man.

That was a bad hire regardless of race. Typical of Besrs management. They are still living in the past the old Monsters of the Midway.
In an era of high powered offensives the Besrs still identify as a defensive team in a defensive league.
The Detroit Lions have had as many 9 win seasons as Chicago since the Ditka era ended.
Bad management bad decision bad team identity
Sorry not racist or discriminatory

Oh no the NFL refuses to hire black coaches but no racism whatsoever. No siree.

Then it's because white coaches are superior. Can't have it both ways.

Your liberal white guilt blocks your ability to be objective.

The Bears made a huge mistake and is a management mistake. Keeping with the 100 year old Bears image of monsters of the midway. Not getting with today's modern game.
Denver hired Rodgers coach and friend in hopes of luring him to Denver.
Now you always ask questions but never answer any. Let's try again.
If Denver acquires Rodgers did they make the right move. Or should they have hired an African American instead.

Well, let's put it this way. Mahomes would be a better pick, don't you agree?

So if out of nine coaches, if they don't hire any blacks, there will be no racism at all involved. Right?
