Indeed. The early Internet culture was very liberating, but once it became a household word it also became a commercial opportunity. It's very similar to the auto industry. Cars, in a very real way, initially caused a euphoric feeling of freedom. In some cases, such as in the manifestos published by Italian Futurists, it was downright giddy. However, everyone knows how that ended up, with everyone in perpetual debt to a small number of huge multinational corporations.
