Starmer’s Labour suffers huge losses as hard-right Reform gains in U.K. elections

LONDON — Early results Friday from nationwide elections in Britain suggested a historic drubbing for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party and sweeping gains for hard-right Reform U.K., led by Trump ally Nigel Farage.

Though many results were still coming in Friday morning, the overall picture will heap pressure on Starmer, an unpopular leader beset by speculation his colleagues may move against him.

Incumbent Bill Cassidy knocked out in Louisiana’s GOP US Senate primary

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy incurred the wrath of pro-Trump Republicans in Louisiana who rejected his re-election bid in Saturday’s party primary election. Instead, voters lined up behind Congresswoman Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming, who parlayed their stronger ties to the president to earn their way into next month’s GOP runoff.

With votes still being counted late Saturday, Letlow coasted to an easy victory but fell short of the needed 50% threshold to avoid a runoff with Fleming.

Joe Panzarella beat Nick Hellyar by a wide margin in Saturday's special runoff election for Houston City Council's District C seat representing Meyerland, Montrose, the Heights and Oak Forest, according to unofficial voting results.

Kentucky Primary-Election Results: Thomas Massie Loses

Representative Andy Barr has defeated Daniel Cameron, the former state attorney general, in the Republican Senate primary. Barr is looking to replace Mitch McConnell, the former Senate Majority Leader and longest-serving senator in Kentucky history, who is retiring after seven terms. Barr was endorsed by President Donald Trump and much of the G.O.P. establishment.

Charles Booker, a former Kentucky state representative, won the Democratic primary. Booker was the Democratic nominee in the 2022 Senate race against the incumbent, Rand Paul, losing to Paul by more than twenty points. Kentucky’s governor, Andy Beshear, later appointed Booker to lead the governor’s Office of Faith-Based Initiatives and Community Involvement. Booker’s main challenger was Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot who was the Democratic nominee in the 2020 Senate race against McConnell. Also running were Pamela Stevenson, the minority leader in the state House; Joshua Blanton, Sr., an advocate for marijuana legalization; Logan Forsythe, a former U.S. Secret Service agent; and Dale Romans, a horse trainer.

Live Results: Texas midterm primary runoffs

PLANO, Texas (AP) — Texans are choosing a Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Tuesday's runoff election, bringing to a close the extended, bitter and expensive primary where President Donald Trump weighed in late to tip the race in another effort to rid the GOP of leaders less devoted to him.

Trump's endorsement of state Attorney General Ken Paxton over four-term Sen. John Cornyn gives the challenger a late boost and puts Cornyn at risk of becoming the first Republican senator in Texas history to seek the party's nod and lose.

2026 Iowa primary election results

Iowa’s primaries are setting up impactful races for the general election ahead on Nov. 3.

Voters will make their choice for governor in an open race — a race with no incumbent on the ballot — for the first time since 2006. Iowans will also elect a new U.S. senator. The results in Iowa could even influence the balance of power in Washington, D.C.

California's new Congressional maps get first test. See election results

The stage was set months ago for some unusual Congressional contests in the California primary election when voters overwhelmingly passed Prop 50.

On Election Day Tuesday, the redrawn Congressional maps that were approved Nov. 4 with passage of the statewide ballot measure received a first test. The maps, spearheaded by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, were intended to tip as many as five Republican-held seats to Democrats this year to offset President Donald Trump's push in Texas to gain five seats for his party there.

So far the results in California are inconclusive. They've only counted about half the votes. California is a big state, and it always takes several days to get even close to a count.

Congress is partisan, so we won't know red and blue districts until the general election in November.

Governor is just weird. The primary is nonpartisan and just dumps everyone into the same race. That made for about 30 candidates this time. The top two duke it out in November. This is a very weird way to pick a governor, and I don't know who the hell voted for such a bizarre system. I didn't.

The fear was that since about 20 Democrats were running, they'd split the vote and we'd get stuck with two Republicans. That doesn't seem to be happening. It will be a Democrat (Becerra) and a Republican (Hilton). Hilton didn't poll well, but there you go. Polls don't tell the whole story when people get around to actually voting. Ditto for TV advertising. The guy with the biggest ad budget, the one with the movie union bugs all over his ads, is way down in the standings at present.

In general, Republicans did better than anyone expected them to. With Drumpf and his well-known disdain for California, and California's well-known disdain for him, some pundits had given up the Republican Party for dead. Well, reports of its death are greatly exaggerated.
"We must remember that we cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation." --Liz Cheney, Republican, 7/21/22
