The rain did almost perfectly coincide with the Macy's parade. Several people were streaming live from around the starting point at 76th and CPW. Bagels & Walks was the one bunch that wasn't so underexposed that you lost shadow detail on a day when there wasn't much else but that. They did a nice job, much better than the national TV and its staged Broadway show commercial in front of the store.

Yup, been there all month. I much prefer going in October when it isn't freezing out, but sometimes reality intrudes on even the best laid plans.

It's a good reality check. You get to see things like the Wall St. crowd cheering on Musk even though he's going to screw them over too. You see why robber barons are fashionable again after a century spent limiting their damage to the whole planet. You get to see the reaction to AI start, being farther away from San Francisco where AI is still considered the gift from God. Trust me, it's starting. A lot of artists are seeing their copyrighted work turning up in AI training and chatbots, and it's time to lawyer up.

Nothing much more to say. There was an investment conference where the CEO was waxing ecstatic about SpaceX and Tesla, and you could see that a lot of investors weren't thrilled about so much of their money indirectly supporting Musk and Trump and their plan to dismantle whatever's left of the US government. There's also a lot of consciousness about Luddism, more than I'd expect otherwise. It's both about what it is, and when it may be relevant. There are a lot of artists and photographers in NYC, and most aren't thrilled about their copyrighted work turning up on chatbots with no compensation to the copyright holder.

The possibilities have been well explored by generations of science fiction writers, and they are very dystopian indeed. Since the artist really is the antenna of the race, none of this gives me a good feeling.

Today was for all these outgoing Congress critters to give speeches on anything whatsoever, and one of our duly elected representatives went on at great length about what happens when and if AI develops a survival instinct and decides we are their enemy. Oldest SF premise going, and I never actually expected it to become an even tiny possibility, what with Heinlein's Laws of Robotics and all that, but now.... who knows?
