Say, how much of this political stuff do you think is a distraction to keep the status quo for big business? Odd that the more stark the problem gets, the more we hear about illegal aliens causing every problem, and the more all of those people who consume too much media turn into malleable true believers.

Clear cutting, strip mining and fracking are 3 things I agree with progressives on 100oct.
I can't understand how anyone would support any of the 3.

Out in the yard today. Fall lawn fertilizer time. Usually do two applications.

It’s the end of October and the Oak trees are just beginning to turn. Remember when the limbs would be bare by now. And there are a lot of trees. I turn my leaves into mulch and leaf mold. Anything organic gets shredded on the garden beds. By this time of year the compost bins are already full.

Best lawn fertilizer is Ringers Lawn Restore. Organic. From Eden Prairie Minnesota. Now it’s Safer Lawn Restore. Also mix in some milorganite.

Patio planters full of Salvias are stil heavily blooming. Hummingbirds sad thanks for all the nectar but time to head south.

Dinosaur-killing asteroid was likely a giant mudball, study says
Fri August 16, 2024

(CNN) Sixty-six million years ago, the story of life on Earth took a dramatic turn when an asteroid collided with what’s now the Yucatán Peninsula in Chicxulub, Mexico. The aftereffects of the collision resulted in the extinction of an estimated 75% of animal species, including most dinosaurs except for birds. But practically nothing of the asteroid itself remains.

In a new study published Thursday in the journal Science, researchers pieced together the chemical identity of the asteroid that fueled the planet’s fifth mass extinction event. The dino killer was a rare clay-rich mudball containing materials from the dawn of the solar system, the findings suggest.

All that water is what evaporates from the oceans condenses in the atmosphere and falls as rain. So it’s a wash.

It’s the melting polar ice that will put most of Florida under water. Just like during the previous inter glacial warming cycles.

All this is true, but warming the planet speeds up the process and causes an increase in flooding. It does not alter the planet's water content, but it does tend to move the water around more. Also the sea level is rising fast, mostly from the ice melt. Don't buy beach real estate.

Here's an interesting way to prevent beach erosion; electrify the sand. Applying an electrical charge to sea-soaked sand can cause the sand grains to form rock-like substances.
As efforts step up to protect coastal regions affected by erosion, scientists have found an unexpected way to protect communities—zapping the shoreline with electricity.

In a study published in the journal Communications Earth and the Environment, researchers from Northwestern University demonstrated the novel technique to strengthen marine sand, potentially offering a sustainable solution to combat erosion caused by climate change and rising sea levels.

The method involves applying a mild electrical current to sea-soaked sand, which triggers chemical reactions that convert naturally occurring minerals into solid calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide or hydromagnesite.

These minerals act as binding agents, effectively transforming loose sand into a rock-like substance.

New garbage rules take effect Tuesday for many NYC homes, apartment buildings

New York City is taking another step in its war on rats and sidewalk trash, as residents can expect to see less bags and more bins on the streets starting Tuesday.

That's because all buildings with one to nine housing units will have to start putting household trash for pickup in large plastic containers — which are said to be rat-proof — on the curb rather than just leaving the bags themselves. It's the first time in 50 years trash won't simply be left on the roadside for takeaway.

Earth’s projected warming hasn’t improved for 3 years. UN climate talks are still pushing

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) — For the third straight year, efforts to fight climate change haven’t lowered projections for how hot the world is likely to get — even as countries gather for another round of talks to curb warming, according to an analysis Thursday.

At the United Nations climate talks, hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, nations are trying to set new targets to cut emissions of heat-trapping gases and figure out how much rich nations will pay to help the world with that task.

Good question. They have those transfer stations where they load up the barges with the stuff. Then, off down the river it goes. Wonder where it rounds up.

In LA, they take it all into the hills. They fill up entire canyons, cover them over when they're full, and deal with the resulting underground fires. They glow in the dark from where the burning gas is vented off. I assume it all goes into the atmosphere and accelerates climate change.

I lived in Trumbull, Connecticut in the early 60s, about 50 miles from New York City, and I remember seeing on TV New York would load barges up with garbage and the would dump it well off shore in the ocean where it was very deep. Don't know if they still do that or not.

I was listening to NPR a few years back and they had an interesting story on the solid waste residue from the city's water treatment plants. The city sold it en-bulk and it was hauled away in railway cars and used for fertilizer on farms in the Mid-West. Apparently, that fertilizer was better than the fertilizer made by the chemical companies and it produce more crops per acre.

It's the methane that's burning off. Methane is what we commonly call natural gas. Back in the late 90, I was stationed at McClellan AFB just outside of Sacramento. One of my duties was to ensure the company that was destroying out expired and excess drugs was doing so in the proper manner. Myself and a couple of NCOs toured a landfill company outside of Stockton the company used to destroy the drugs. The landfill company had a contract with Stockton to handle their garbage disposal. They're process went like this; truck would enter a large building and back up to a deep pit and dump the garbage collected. A huge claw, like you see in arcade machines, would come down and pick up a large amount of garbage. The claw would lift it and deposit it into a chute and conveyor belt that led to a furnace. The furnace was heated to 1800F degrees and would burn everything. The ash and metals that did not burn were conveyed to another area where an electromagnet would pick out iron metals and shift the ashes from metals. The metals would be sold for recycling and the ashes were put in the landfill. The ashes, if I recall correctly, composed about 3% of the material that wasn't incinerated. What was interesting about the operation is all the exhaust air went through a water filter and other filters before being released into the air. They provided us documentation from the EPA showing the air leaving their exhaust towers was cleaning than the air coming into the plant. Another feature of the plant is once they fired up the furnace and reached the right temperature, they'd shut of the gas and the furnace would maintain that temperature as long as they fed the furnace. The heat from the furnace not only burned the garbage but it was used to heat water for a generator to produce electricity which the plant sold back to Stockton.

The plant was really ingenious in what they were doing. Driving past the landfill you wouldn't know it was a landfill because you couldn't see or smell the garbage. Stockton paid them twice, once for the garbage they burned and once for the electricity they produced. It would be beneficial if more large cities, like L.A., San Diego, New York, etc., would do that. It's save a lot of land, reduce pollution, and provide a source of electricity.

Correct on all counts.

NYC used to have huge trash incinerators but it stopped using them for a lot of reasons.

Landfills produce huge amounts of methane. Often it self-ignites, but LA has been known to burn it off for electricity. Methane burns as clean as anything if you do it right. The real smoke problem right now is all the smoke produced by forest fires. These create a positive feedback loop with climate change and the process self-accelerates.

Indeed, at some point LA will run out of canyons they can fill up. Among all the other problems, the landfills destroy prime real estate, which is already in a severe shortage.

I love Brooklyn. ❤

More public space opens under the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan

New Yorkers can now enjoy more public space under the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. The latest phase of “The Arches” opened on Monday, adding 15,000 square feet of park space to an area closed to the public for more than a decade, the city’s Department of Transportation announced. The space, now with lush greenery and new seating, had been closed for nearly 15 years while serving as a staging site for several bridge restoration projects. The Arches sits next to the Brooklyn Banks, a haven for skateboarders that partially reopened last year.

Most of the space has been closed to the public since 2010 when the Department of Transportation began work on its $800 million project to restore the bridge. The ambitious undertaking included a comprehensive cleaning of its granite stones for the first time since its construction and the replacement of mortar between the stones.

Deadly bomb cyclone cuts power for thousands in US north-west
A storm off the coast of the US north-west and western Canada is pummelling the region - bringing high winds, flooding and snow to over seven million residents living in states along the Pacific Ocean.

The storm has caused widespread power outages for hundreds of thousands of Americans, and its strong winds have downed trees.

The storm has also stretched up to Canada, where wind is the primary concern and gusts of up to 100mph (160km/h) have been reported off the coast of Vancouver Island. Around 140,000 customers were without power in British Columbia, according to the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority.

Beyond wind, rain and snow, the storm could also bring flash flooding, rock slides and debris flows, as well as heavy mountain snow, in areas of high elevation. The storm is expected to create blizzard conditions through the Cascade Range of mountains, which runs through both the US and Canada.
