Re: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse live: Many casualties feared
It was certainly too heavy for whatever precautions existed to prevent the predictable consequences of a vessel that size losing control. There have been books written about this. I can't remember any titles offhand, but there was one real good one about why oil tankers are always causing problems. ...

Re: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse live: Many casualties feared
There's something to that. Any ideology, including the left's, is going to be inadequate in the long run because it's an idea rather than a logical and practical response to problems. We can go on forever about migrants and contraception, both of which are real issues with sweeping moral implication...

Re: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse live: Many casualties feared
The GOP was done in by the classic Orwellian premise, namely the idea that you can win elections by controlling the language instead of trying to control whatever problems exist in the real world. They're on the Nooz 24/7, but everything's a problem but them. What has happened to, "We have met ...

Re: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse live: Many casualties feared
What in my post was so divisive? They said all the same stuff in the presser on TV. Ships need more attention to contingencies and more backup systems that actually work instead of blowing smoke, literally, and not correcting the drift. The problem is that maritime law is basically international law...

Re: What did we learn from COVID?
We don't know enough about Covid to know whether or not we really needed to shut down the economy. We did learn that maybe, just maybe, we should be more prepared for this kind of thing to happen. We're never very proactive, probably because there usually isn't a compelling immediate threat to get p...

Re: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse live: Many casualties feared
Glenn, with all respect, you're full of it. Who built the Interstates? The Federal government. Your taxes. They didn't do it to enhance commerce either, they did it for national security so military assets and evacuations could move more quickly. Your career is the result. They'd still be moving all...

You see the effects everywhere. Everything's changing. There's no argument any more, just denial. Denial is abroad in the land, as we see every day on this board. The climate in LA, supposedly a place where there is no climate, has changed profoundly. All the changes are bad. I just spent money on a...

It's what happened March 26 that matters. The IPO of his social media company opened, and he's now five gigabucks richer, on paper. No more bankruptcy.

Re: Ron DeSantis signs bill banning children 13 and under from social media
The daily attention grabs by GOP faithful are also considered good television, even by people who should know better. They sell a lot of pillows, useless drugs, lousy instant coffee, fast food, look-alike cars, and legislators who don't legislate.

Re: What did we learn from COVID?
The pandemic was almost a perfect rerun of the one in 1918, right down to the conspiracy nuts demonstrating in the street and blocking traffic. We learned mostly that human nature doesn't change no matter how well you explain the situation.

Re: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse live: Many casualties feared
Consensus seems to be that the ship lost propulsion. This is a problem with modern ships because they have only one propulsion system and failure can come from many places. I would imagine that someone pushed the big red distress button on the GMDSS radio console that is compulsory for large vessels...

Re: GOP House is a "complete failure"
Of course. They are downright eager to let El Paso become a battle zone. Think of all the great footage they're getting out of it. I'm sure we'll see it until we're all a bit nauseous as the election gets closer. As always, it's the people who lose.

Re: GOP House is a "complete failure"
The Federal government doesn't govern any more, and we all know who is responsible for that. It's painfully obvious every day. The Republicans turned it into a show, and not a very good one. Both sides share the blame for the immigration mess, but they are not equal shares. We all know who has been ...

The disappearance of pine trees is disturbing, and it is real. Logging hasn't helped. They still clearcut, they just don't do a whole forest at once. They do it in sections. No one objects to thinning the forest, it provides more light for trees that remain, and of course fire has a role in a health...

> eliminate the money Impossible. Limit it, yes, but there's no way to get rid of it altogether. There will always be work-arounds available to the elite to buy influence, just like in every other country in the world. The problem here is that the people don't really pick the president. > filibuster...
