Re: Enough about slow California vote counts
Plus mail and drop-box ballots which are cast and/or postmarked by election day are counted, and some take up to a week to get through the mail or in from the collection boxes. This makes a slow count from running an honest process in the most populous state in the US take even longer. At this point...

Enough about slow California vote counts
Enough votes are counted to show that there are no major surprises in the CA primary election. There were some minor surprises, but what they are depends on which spin doctor is talking. As always, statistics will tell you anything if you torture them long enough. Republicans are still saying either...

Re: World cup tickets $10k top, and you can't get one anyway
Many reports coming in about foreign nationals who are coming to the US for the World Cup being hassled or interrogated for long periods at the airport upon landing here. This is a credible one from BBC concerning a Somali referee who got grilled and finally denied entry in Miami. https://www.bbc.co...

6.1 can't cause a destructive tsunami, just a barely detectable tidal surge. I would be inclined to believe that such an event in the Caribbean would be barely noticeable in the Gulf.

More CMEs as this solar cycle goes out with a real bang. Another storm watch has been issued, but it doesn't sound any more consequential than the last one. A few aurora photos on the net, and lousy HF radio propagation. Business is as usual.

Re: AI causing massive layoffs by the oligarchy
According to the law, a phone line must beep every (some number of) seconds to show that the call is being recorded. Most companies ignore this, however. Some have a voice recording say the call is being recorded. Some don't. The ones that don't are in violation. Conservatives in Texas are pushing f...

Dunno, everyone here is still calling it "SoFi Stadium." SoFi is some sort of banking type of concern. Maybe there's another name for it in the official program, but I'm not inclined to drop two grand and park a mile away in an iffy neighborhood to find out. Besides, right now the big head...

Re: Latest Solar Gobbledygook
This cycle is going out with a real bang. Far as aurora and all that goes, though, it's just the wrong time of year in this hemisphere. G3-4 isn't going to cut it, you need the real G5 thing and then your lawn mower might develop a mind of its own. (It happened last year, both the bang and the lawn ...

Re: Mass Shootings/Gun Control Reform Thread
Yes, that shooting was on the Nooz for about three minutes yesterday afternoon (LA time). They had no facts, and since it was the weekend there was no one around to run out and get them any. They just blabbed the usual hyped-up bang-bang-bang mass-panic, undisclosed-number-of-ambulances-called type ...

Yes, inflation has caught up with camera gear. When you see one of those guys at the ball game with the three-foot lens, that thing cost him as much as a car used to go for. The crooks get it that the little trademark saying "CANON" on the pentaprism cover of the body attached to the 1000-...

Re: SAG-AFTRA Reaches Tentative Deal on Studio Contract
Glad they put that in about AI-generated actors. Of course, most of this AI stuff is being contracted offshore, meaning that actors now have more protection, but all the other craft unions have much catching up to do. Used to be that if you wanted Rome to fall in your movie, you had to build it on a...

Re: Mass Shootings/Gun Control Reform Thread
Several panics have broken out in L.A. after many shots rang out and military helicopters flew low over residential neighborhoods. Seems that the military decided to hold an urban warfare exercise in the most crowded residential parts of the city, and not bother to tell anyone about it. When people ...

See, there's the difference. The LA city council spends months arguing over whether any money should go to move homeless camps off public sidewalks, and who should should pay to fix the streets and put out fires. (Hint: not the rich.) Oil drilling in Santa Barbara is an issue... again. Bet you thoug...

Yeah, that one's been on our Nooz since Wednesday, displacing more routine scary crime stories in TV coverage of LA's daily mayhem.
Damn, when did movie star and/or above-the-line producer/director become a hazardous occupation? They keep dropping from acute knife poisoning.

i think..' planned-obsolescence' gave us walm. P.O. still exists, it's just more psychological. Instead of things falling apart after three years, they just become less exciting to think about. You know, like this current spate of ads on TV sports shows, where everyone's trying to sell you a Defend...

All these statistics are kind of meaningless, given the current public consciousness. Right now the vast majority of people are being squeezed from all directions by inflation, and they're pissed. Been to the gas station or drug store lately? Not happy places. Today's LA Nooz led with the story that...

Well, the solar storm was late. It's in progress now, but it's not exactly the best time of day to be looking for aurora. It's also (so far) kind of piddly, though there's still some time for it to get stronger.

Cars do last longer. Electronics are more durable and need less routine maintenance. (No more changing tubes.) Major computer breakthroughs are less frequent, as it becomes a mature technology, so your box isn't obsolete every year or two. Mostly I watch sports on TV. As a trained film maker, I can'...

Not just durability. They put huge ad budgets into creating the illusion that the latest products are so much better than last year's that you can't afford not to update. If even that fails, they resort to fantasies like the current one seen nightly where people drive their shiny new oversized cars ...
